[:"blue"] You guys may recall a trio of gliders that I go a little while ago from someone who loved them but had no time for them... The mother was really fat, the dad was really sweet, and their 8-9 month old daughter that was with them is missing one of her ears.. Remember now?

Anyway.. The mom had joeys that were about 3-4 weeks shy of coming OOP. The dad is being neutered next weekend so that their older daughter can stay with them and they will get to stay a family.

Today the weirdest thing happened...

Her joeys came OOP. Both of them are females and BOTH are missing 1 ear just like their older sister! One is missing her right ear and the other her left ear... IS THIS GENETIC??

Not only are they missing an ear, but they are both "white tips"! They have no hair but their markings are all on their skin, their tails are completely dark and they have each have a "white" band on them.. It's still light pink with no color just like the face is of a WFB before they have hair. One joey has this band right above the tip of her tail and the other one has it on her tip. I guess they still may develop color though.

I am so glad that the dad is being neutered next weekend because we don't need earless joeys being born.

This is so weird to me... Is it genetic? Is the mom just eating them off? [/]

um pics please!!! they sound adorable, what unique little babies!! Are you going to sell them? Not they they should probably breed or anything, but they would sure add character to someone's clan. No idea about the genetics... do the ears look like they have been nibbled or are they just flush missing hmmmm

[:"green"]I, too, would like to see pictures in order to determine whether it's genetic or not. In all likelihood, it is genetic, because the chances are very strong that if the mother had mutilated them, they would have been totally rejected & not survived.

WT's! Oh, I want! Can't wait to see pictures darling. About the ear... It's hard to say if it's genetic or not. Considering 1 female is producing joeys each missing one ear, there is a chance that she may be nibbling them. It doe happen... My female Honey supposedly came OOP with half an ear. Now, you would think that if it were genetic, they would all be missing the same ear. Also, if something were geniticly wrong with them, out of all the things to me screwed up, why would they be missing an ear? That's just kind of odd. Usually when animals repeatedly are produced missing an extremity, it is their tail... Just something to think on

my guess is that the mom is eating them off by chance were the ears right next to each other in the pouch? The one with the ear missing on the left on the right side of her pouch and the one with the right missing on the left side of her pouch? That would make me believe even more that she ate them off...and probably at the same time...lol They sound cute and of course like everyone else I want to see pictures!

that is strange i have a joey too with parts of his ear missing, i thought mabey it was the father, but im not sure. its the second baby like that from her, so it looks like i may get the male neutered.
p.s sil i havent spoke with you in a bit, but whispers is great, and soon to be a daddy of 2.

Okay I might not know alot but if they were mirror twins like humans then that makes since, cuz if you hold them up to eachother they should have the same traits just on the other side of each other.
My new baby is missing a piece of her ear as well. Is this a glider problem?

I have one of chaz's babies with the missing piece of ear. It makes it easier to tell the two apart.
But he is doing well, as well as his brother, and they are both very spoiled.

[:"blue"] Sorry it has taken me so long to get back here and post but I didn't want to tease everyone until I could get at least a few photos....

I have never seen a white tip joey nor have I ever seen anything but a healthy joey.. I do not know FOR SURE what is "wrong" with these joeys, but I have a hunch...

I'm pretty sure that these babies are NOT white tips but that they have fat deposits on the ends of their tails. I think this because the mom is not at a really healthy weight.. I know she was on an awful diet and this worried me from the minute that I saw her, with joeys in the pouch, along with 5-6 almonds to eat. Another reason that I think they are fat deposits is beacause they do not feel right.. they feel sort of hard and crusty? Those aren't the words to describe it but I really don't know how to. I held one of them for the first time tonight so I was able to get a much better look at her. Righty is the one that I held (she is missing her right ear) and Lefty is always nursing... Lefty has more hair than Righty and the only place that she DOESN'T have fur is on the "white tip" of her tail... What does this mean? It's a fat deposit?

Now I am worried... I always have heard about not feeding them fatty foods because things like fat deposits can happen... but I've never seen it until I got these gliders. So my question is.. when their eyes open.. What am I looking for? Will they have fat over their eyes? Will they just not be able to see? Am I jumping the gun on this? Could they be white tips? Am I being paranoid because the mom is obese? [/]

They look like WT's to me... Their tails do look oddly fat though. Honey's joey is just starting to come OOP. It has a slight WT on the side of it's tail and smaller, but that's about what it looks like...

Yeah... I think I am just paranoid... I was told by another breeder that they are white tips and cannot get fat deposits in their tail. I guess I am just in denial that I have 2 white tip joeys?

Linda, perhaps it is just me, but I think you should relax and not drive yourself nuts with "what ifs" and enjoy those little darlins. Time will tell you IF/WHEN you need to worry.

I read somewhere about a apir of chinchillas sp? that produced babies with rolled or missing ears. Well they did a DNA test and discovered that the parent were cousins. Could this be a possibility in gliders? Not accusing you, just curious, the chincillas were barely related and had this problem. But congrats on your WT babies

Just an update: Both babies still have this "white tip" of theirs, although I am still not convinced that they're actual white tips. The babies are fully furred on top of their bodies (head, back, tail) with the exception of their little tips. There isn't even fuzz on their tips... so what does this mean? With deep paranoia I keep going back to fat deposits... Although both babies also have their eyes open and they are beautiful! And there are no fatty deposits in their eyes!

That's very interesting.. I don't know what to say about that except for the fact that I'm not worried about being accused of anything. I got the pair when the momma already had babies ITP.

Considering their is no fur on thier "white tips", it very well may be scar tissue. If mom nibbled their ears, there is a good chance she nibbled their tails too. Maybe what happened is that she nibbled their tails while in pouch, it scared over, and now they have scar tissue at the tip of their tails.

I'm going to take some new photos tonight.

Yup! They grew up to be normal little girls with missing ears.. Leyna was right, the "white tips" turned out to be scar tissue from their mommas nibbling away on them... black hair grew over them and you can't tell that they were ever any different.
