Please forgive me if this is already addressed somewhere and I've just entirely missed it, but how do you get your CA:PH ratio up high enough using HPW? I've looked up the HPW nutritional info and it says the HPW mix has a 1.29:1 ratio, which should mean that I'd need to get their veggies and fruit up to around a 3:1 CA:PH ratio in order to balance around 2:1 total.
I've looked up a list of fruits and veggies and it's really hard to find very many that are over 1:1 CA:PH. Even plain nonfat yogurt apparently has only a 1.27:1 ratio because of its phosphorous levels. And I didn't see anything anywhere about adding calcium powder to the fruit and veggies. Short of feeding them nothing but spinach and papaya, how do I make sure they're getting enough calcium? And can I add a little rep-cal to the fruits and veggies in order to bring the calcium up?

Well, I've heard that rep-cal or any other calcium supplement is not needed with the HPW diet because your glider should be getting enough calcium with their fruits, veggies and HPW combined. I've not heard of any issues with calcium from feeding your gliders HPW with the recommended fruits and veggies, so I don't have an issue with a lack of calcium. Hopefully someone with more diet experience will come along and help you out. HTH some.

Which are the recommended fruits and veggies for HPW? They can't be the same as the BML ones, because those are kind of low on the CA:PH ratio to balance out the added calcium in BML. But HPW doesn't have a high CA:PH ratio. I did a USDA search of a bunch of safe fruits and veggies, and the only ones that showed up with a CA:PH ratio greater than 1:1 were blackberry, papaya, winter squash, butternut squash, spinach and romaine. Of those only spinach and papaya were over 2:1, and I'm wary about feeding large quantities of spinach because of the possible iron overdose issue.

Soh, I have been using HPW for many years now. The veggies I have always fed every night with the HPW diet are the following: Corn, Green Beans, Carrots, Peas (frozen mix) For Fruit I offer (even though they dont eat it most of the time) Honeydew Melon, Cantelope, Strawberries, Peaches (frozen mix) I have not yet, thank God, had any issue with a lack of calcium problem. I have had blood work done on my gliders and xrays to make sure they are doing well. Bone structure always looks good and blood work always comes back great. You are absolutely correct about not feeding large amounts of spinach, not only due to the high iron count, but it is also high in oxalates, which binds calcium and actually pushes it out of the body instead of allowing it to go where it belongs.

Thank you, that does make me feel better. Our x-rays here have also come back with really good bone structure and I'm a little obsessive about keeping it that way. My pair absolutely loves the HPW, they've never cleaned up their staple food like this before, and I just want to know I'm getting them what they need on it now instead of finding out the hard way later on.

OK, Peggy. Do you actual find this frozen mix in the store like the frozen veggie mix? I 'try' to buy the fruits fresh as often as possible, but it would be nice to have the frozen handy and available, especially this mix.........

For fruits, I feed the Honeydew, Cantaloupe & Papaya, since Papaya is good for calcium but I feed the fruits fresh not frozen

I always give papaya because of the ratios. I also give them apples, pears, kiwi, cantalope, honeydew, grapes (if I have them..sometimes I eat them all) cherries and watermelon (if I have it). Usually for veggies I give carrots, peas, green beans and cucumbers (they love those). I have a huge blackberry bush growing wild in my backyard, but the darn birds out there keep eating them all before I can get out there and pick some...ggrrrr!!

I read in a post a long time ago that too many grapes can be a cause in UTI for gliders but alot of people give grapes in their diets. Can someone verify if grapes are good for that or not??

Yes, I find the frozen mix like that. Doyle I believe. I have never heard of too many grapes causing UTI's... Papaya always seems to be available at my store, I am just not crazy about the way it smells....

I have never heard of too many grapes causing UTI's ok, thankyou Peggy! I have no problems finding Papaya in my store as well as no problems with any smell, only when it starts to go bad.

Mine won't touch Papaya (or Mangos for that matter!) It is a constant battle to try to get them to eat foods that are good for them. Mine would live on corn and mealies if I let em'! lol

Papaya is generally always available near me, though they are usually the mini ones which seem like quite a rip off compared to the big ones. What I do is buy a bunch, cut it up into glider-sized pieces, and then freeze it in ice cube trays. One large papaya will last forever this way. If you just buy up a bunch when you find it and freeze it that should help you have it on hand. Papaya makes up half the fruits my gliders get nightly, with the other half being a mix of cantatope, honeydew, mango, and berries. They get more of the melon than the mango and the berries. Honeydew has a higher Ca:Ph than cantalope. Rasberries and blackberries have good ratios and you can buy them frozen most places Yeah, I tried the Papaya once. Ick! Who actually likes that stuff? Also, I hate how it has that weird slimy texture even when it's not ripe. My gliders eat it all up, though, so apparently they don't share my disgust. Of course, they also eat bugs. There's no accounting for taste, right?

Papaya is a favorite with my guys - I get a large one at the Farmer's Market for about $3 and slice it into 'glider-sized' bites, then lay it on a cookie tray. Let it freeze overnight and slide it into a plastic baggie. Lasts a couple of weeks that way! I don't like the taste of papaya by itself, but papaya, mango and *cannot remember last ingredient* makes a wonderful salsa. It is also good in fruit smoothies - gives it just a slightly exotic tang. Plus, it's so good for you.

I used to always get the smaller papaya and never saw a large one...those things are insane! But I find them all the time now at wal mart. I didn't think you could freeze them...guess Ill try that next time!
I love mango! They have to be real ripe, soft and juicy for the boys to eat them. Otherwise the wont touch them or the throw them out of their bowls.
