Help! May have problem with male (Apollo) #575217

Ok, I have never owned a male glider before. This morning, my Apollo's male part was all the way out. He keeps licking it and it won't go back in. He is neutered. I need to leave for work and I don't want to leave him if I need to do something. He is a blood biter and my husband is here if we need to get him in a ecollar. I can take him to work if he needs to be seperated, but I want to know if this is just natural or if there is a problem!

He may be just grooming, which is normal. However, if it stays out for a long time or starts to dry out, you may have a problem. Make sure it stays moist - use KY Jelly (just regular, without warming) if you have to. You should keep an eye on it for any signs of discomfort.

It should be going back in when he moves around. Is there any way you can get some ky jelly on it? You cannot let it dry out. If it doesn't go back in within a few minutes, I would get the collar on and head to the vets. This can become serious pretty quickly. I am sure others will chime in. Get the ky on his first. Make sure it is the normal, not the warming, kind.

AWWW - Sam.

Is one of the girls in heat? I noticed this with Apollo when the girls were in heat. I would keep an eye on him for the day. Sometimes, boys do this. Welcome to the world of boy gliders! If it persists, then it is an issue, but for now, I would just keep an eye on him (as long as he is just licking and there is no damage.)

hug2

It has been out at least 30 minutes. Should I sperate him in a bonding pouch and head to work? Right now it is red and looks forked. Is that correct?

It is normally red and forked. You want to watch for any black, which means the skin is dying. If you can get the ky on it, it should keep it moist.

Just spoke with Sam on the phone. Her Apollo came from me so I was able to tell her a little more about his normal behavior. Girls are in heat, so I think that he is just responding as he normally does. She has him with her in a bonding pouch and will keep an eye on him all day.

Thanks Val and everyone else that helped me this morning. Apollo is here with me. He is pretty restless, however, he is doing well. I am keeping an eye on him all day and am just going to make sure that he doesn't hurt himself. Val told me that this is pretty normal behavior and since I have never owned male gliders, I didn't know the sounds a colony makes when they are in heat. Thanks again everyone!

Ok, so within 2 hours, Apollo's penis went from red to black. He is now at the vet's office in surgery. I am so nervous, scared, worried, ect. Can you tell this is my first "male" experience? I don't like the vet but what are you going to do? Tell them no? Drive 2 to 3 hours in an emergency situation? Nope, you are just going to suck it up and deal with it and pray. Pray they are taking care of your glider the best way possible. I am anxiously awaiting the call to let me know when it is time to come and get him. If they didn't get him in today, I will just go crazy! They told me yes, but if the necrosis goes further up, we could have other problems. He just can't wait another 24 hours. Please say prayers for my little scared boy. cry

I spoke to Sam a little bit ago and she finally received the call that her boy made it through surgery just fine. They removed one fork of his penis and also found that his anal glands were impacted so they expunged them while he was under. Continue to pray for his recovery...

Thank you so much everyone for your prayers. Apollo is now home. The vet took off the ecollar so it was a blast getting him BACK into it. Lucky for me, he is still pretty heavily sedated. I am fixing his cage up right now. Thank you so much Suz for today and also for updating everyone. I guess it was worse than they thought. They actually had to remove almost all of his penis. cry The necrosis had set in so fast, they just couldn't stop it.

The bad news....he didn't stop licking himself the whole way home. I talked to Bourbon the whole way home and got him in his ecollar as soon as I walked into the door. Please pray for him as we feel that we may have a SMer on our hands.

Thanks again everyone for everything! Apollo sends his love and even tried to bite me a little. That just means he is feeling better!

Thank you so much Suz! hug2 You have no idea how much it meant to have you "there" with me yesterday. Yeah, between you, Denise, and Bourbon....can I really go wrong?

Thank you so much EVERYONE for your kind words and support. We made it through the night. He DID NOT want to take his medicne this morning but happly took 3 syringes of water and his two mealies! He did eat some liquified BML last night and drank like crazy. I don't think he is using his water bottle in his cage so I keep giving him water via a syringe.

I just hold him while he thrashes around. He HATES his ecollar more than anything. I had to cut some of it off last night in order for him not to topple over every time he tried to walk. He looks better now because most of the time he falls over now, it is to fight his collar.

Is he ever going to just walk around or is he going to fight this until it comes off? This is the first glider I have ever had in an ecollar and I just want to make sure I am doing everything right.

Some gliders fight the collar constantly and others just give up after a while - it just depends on his personality. I wish I could give you a more concrete answer though frown

Ok, I know that I said that I would post the medical term of Apollo's condition once I had my paperwork in front of me:

Impacted Cloacal Gland Cysts

That is what had to be drained. Sorry it took so long.
