Lately my gliders in the livingroom haven't been eating much of their HPW. The 2 I have in my room are eating all their HPW, but the other gliders aren't.

I've thought about it and the only conclusion I can come to is that the food in the 2 cages in the livingroom is spoiling before the gliders get a chance to eat it all. I don't have an AC in the livingroom, so it's pretty warm(I keep a fan running all the time cause I don't want the ferrets to get too hot. The gliders don't seem to mind and still all cram into one pouch, lol. tounge

Anyways, I'd appreciate any feedback and recommendations on how I can fix this problem.

*They're eating their fruits/veggies/mealies, just not their HPW. I just made a new batch and they won't eath that one either, so it's not a problem with a batch.

Just a thought, are you adding egg to the mixture? And if so, are they old eggs?
I have found that if I use eggs over a few weeks old.(I have my own chickens) they don't eat the mixture as well as if they were fresh.
So maybe check to see if your eggs are spoiled.
Is anything else old that you are adding to the mixture?
Is your freezer cold enough to keep it frozen?
Just some things to think about.
Hope you get if figured out soon, as I know the mixture gets expensive when you add all the goodies together.

As time goes by and my loves pass. I will forever be greatfull for the time we had together. I will see you soon my loves.

Yes, I use eggs. They're fresh though, I usually buy them the day before I make a new batch because I make double batches(that's 6 eggs).

I don't think there's anything wrong with the batch cause the gliders in the room are licking their dish clean! There's an AC in the room though, so that's why I figured that maybe the HPW in the livingroom is spoiling, since there's no AC in there. It melts REALLY fast and since it's got eggs I would assume it would stay good very long in a warm room. :/

I would have no qualms throwing out the new batch if that was the problem, but they didn't each much of the old batch either and I used different eggs and a new bottle of honey in each batch. The powder and pollen wouldn't go bad that fast. tounge

It may just have to do with the temp overall in the house.

You say the gliders that are in where the AC are eating, the gliders in the room with no AC are not eating, then protein part of the meal that is, could it be room temp?

I ask because I know mine will eat like there is no tomorrow if I leave the AC set at 74 here at night, but if I turn it up to 77 or higher, they barely touch their food. Although I have to say hardly ever is there any HPW left over unless there are some breeding...

Maybe the HPW is to warm for them. You could try and get one of those thermal dishes (you add ice/cold water) into an enclosed container underneath the dish.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking is wrong as well. They eat all their fruits/veggies and the mealies, but they just aren't eating much of their HPW. Obviously the fruits/veggies won't spoil that fast,b ut since there's egg in the HPW then I was thinking that it might be spoiling. The gliders used to eat it throughout the night, not all at once, so I'm guessing that the eat some right when I put it in, then, as time passes, they come back to eat more, but it's already gone bad so they won't touch it.

I've been waiting til all the gliders are up to put it in the cages, that way I know they're all getting some before it spoils, but I can't think of what else to do. Should I maybe handfeed each glider some HPW each morning?

They've all ALWAYS licked their bowls clean of HPW, but as soon as it started to get how they stopped eating most of it. frown

I was thinking of adding some piece of chicken(boiled in plain water) to their dishes each night til it cools down(summers are short up here, so it should only last a few more weeks til it cools off at night). Would taht be a good idea or no? I don't want to throw off the balance of their diets, but since they're not eating their HPW anyways then it couldn't hurt, right?

For calcium I'd give them extra papaya and spinage in their fruits/veggies. Maybe I'll order some more eucalyptus leaves too.

I've got glideraide too, if I could somehow use that to help balance things out?

Could you move all your sugs into the room with AC? I know it gets really hot here, and I'd be worried about them not eating/playing/possibly getting dehydrated if I didn't have AC in their room.

That would be impossible. 1)there's not enough room and 2) hubby wouldn't allow it. The "room" is our bedroom and hubby's got to sleep at night cause he gets up to go to work really early every morning and between 8 gliders running in wheel, knocking down toys, and barking all night, it ain't gonna happen. :/

It's not that hot in our livingroom. During the day it's maybe 70-80(with the fan it helps it feel alot cooler) and at night it's about 70.

Gliders normally live in a warm environment, so the heat doesn't seem to bother them. They're drinking plenty of water and playing like usual. I'm giving them extra fruits/veggies and they're eating them all. So they're eating alot, just not the HPW, which is what they NEEd to be eating.

So, while it's warm, can I also offer them chicken and extra high-calcium veggies/fruits to make up for what they aren't getting in their HPW. The heat should last much longer. It's cool/cold about 75% of the year up here, so summers are really short.

Has this been going on for a while? I noticed with mine that they come and go on eating habits. One cage always has a bit left, the others are licked clean. Usually if one of my females is in heat, the males stop eating. (And they are neutered!)

Also, check to see how much is really left. In my trio, they get 1 1/2 tablespoons and I often find some left. I finally measured how much was left. 1/2 a teaspoon at most. It just looks like a lot!

Well, a few weeks back all the gliders stopped eating so I took 2 of them to the vet because they were the worst off. They did fecal checks and checked both gliders and the only thing wrong was a slightly higher amount of negative bacteria. So, everyone was put on amoxi for a week.

They were eating fine and then it started getting hotter at night and they slowly started eating less of their HPW, but still ate all their veggies/fruits. They haven't been eating alot of their HPW for about a week.

I wasn't worried because they were still eating all their veggies/fruits and mealies. I know there's no harm if they don't eat if for a few days, but it's been about a week now and I'm starting to worry cause they need their vitamins and stuff. frown

I'd say that about 3/4 of their HPW is left in the dish in the morning.

Oh yeah. I've only got 1 boy in my colony of 4 and he's neutered, so that wouldn't explain why they all aren't eating their HPW. :/

Can you rotate out the cages so the non-HPW eaters get to stay in your room for a bit? If you can, and they start eating again, that could help explain some of the mystery.

Have you tried getting the thermal dish like Linda suggested? That sounds like the best idea for keeping their HPW cold!

Hand feeding them during the day sounds like a good idea to me; that will help ensure all are eating a bit.

Maybe you could invest in a small portable A/C unit (you can move it from room to room)? Your air temperature seems cool enough to me, but we're acclimated to the Arizona temperatures (80 degrees with A/C).

I can't rotate out the cages. Silvara(one of the gliders in the room) has joeys IP and this is her first time having babies so I wouldn't want to stress her out by moving her and Gil into the livingroom. I have cats and the other gliders are used to them(they like to snooze on top of the cages, lol), but I think that Silvara might get REALLY stressed having large furry creatures jumping on top of her cage. worried

Thermal dish? I missed that! She must have posted while I was typing. tounge Where can I get one of those? If I can get it at a store nearby then I'll be out first thing tomorrow morning getting 2 of them! dance

Tonight I'm going to give each of them some HPW by hand, leave the reast in the dish, and then give them each a bit more in the morning. Hopefully that will help.

I live in a small apartment(just 1 bedroom) so one medium AC would probably be enough to keep the livingroom cool, but I've just gotta convince hubby to buy it. :/ He thinks it's fine with the fan(it FEELS about 70 with the fan running). You know how guys are... shakehead

I'm off to google thermal dishes! lol

Well, my theory proved true last night: the heat is causing the HPW to go bad overnight.

Last night it was really cool, in the 50's, which would have meant that the livingroom was in the 60's and, lo and behold, the gliders ate all their HPW. grin

Since I can't figure out where in the world to get a thermal dish, I'm going to buy 2 more separated baby food dishes(from Walmart), put 1/2" of water in there, freeze em, and then stack the regular food dishes on top of them. That way it will keep the HPW cold and the gliders won't be able to get to the ice. wink It works in my head, so hopefully it will work in reality, lol.

I dont think it is so much that the HPW is going bad as it is that gliders just dont eat as much protein when it is hotter.

Who knows you may be right, good luck.

For the same reason we don't eat as much when it is hot out. We tend to drink more than eat. That is the only logical reason I can think of. I agree with Peggy though.
