Trevor died in my hand last night. I was told by the vet there were several animals in my area who were dying by spider bites. He might have eaten it though, I didn't see any obvious bites. It happened so fast... He was okay just an hour before he died. Just be careful and watch out for your gliders when you let them out to play. I was in the same room but he was in my walk-in closet for a really long time until I got him.
Again, please watch your gliders and make sure you can see them at all times. I will be using a tent from now on.

I love you, Trevor...>^.^< Be good until I come see you again!

So sorry for you and your baby. Thanks for the info. Bugs are starting to come in for winter and it makes sense.

[:"green"]Jess, I'm so sorry It seems really bizarre that a spider would bite & kill a glider - I never even thought of the possibility before...
He was really handsome. : Spend lots of time with Oni now, you're both missing him, I'm sure.

I am so sorry and unfortunately this does happen. One of my ferrets died from a spider bite to her paw. It was horrible and unexpected. Again I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry. We have Hobo spiders and Brown Recluses here...if I can't get them out, I squish them (sorry to all who that might offend-I leave them alone outside). Either of those species can be fatal for a suggie, and make a person horrendously ill, if not dead, and the Hobos are notoriously aggressive..I've had them come after us!! Thank you for the warning, and know your baby is waiting for you at the Rainbow bridge now, with the rest of our babies. In fact, my 6 just sent me a BEAUTIFUL rainbow yesterday...one of the most brilliant I've seen...I'll post the pic I took of it..see attachment.

To me, that pic is the visible part of the land our dear babies reside in until we can join them. I think of my 6 that are there...TroiI, Gumpy, Fox, Dana, William (aka BabyBoy), and Peek (BabyBoy's oldest son) every time I see one.

Your little guy is in good company until you get there...besides my 6, there are Monster's Precious, Smeagol, and their joey, Annie and Katie (Annie's dad), Mya (BMXgirl) , Bosco, Chloe, and Sweetie (Mimijo), and many other of our beloved little ones that will watch out for him until you get there.

On the day you do, your little boy will freeze, and look off into the distance. Then a look of joy will come over him, and he will begin to run across the grass as fast as his little legs will go. You will be looking around, and suddenly have a face full of soft, warm, sweet smelling fur as he gives you the biggest face hug you've ever had. At that point, you will cross the Rainbow Bridge together, with him riding on your shoulder, and nothing will ever come between you again...not even death itself.

We lost a glider to a bite from a brown recluse spider. The spot was on her back and looked similar to the bites that the male gliders sometimes give the females when mateing. We took her to the vet and he removed the contaminated area. A couple of weeks later we had to take her back and he had to remove more contaminated tissue. The place was about the size of a nickel when he finally got it cleaned up. The place completely healed and we put her back with her neutered mate. He opened the place up so we put her in isolation again and got her completely healed. At least visually she looked healed. So we decided to put her with a different cagemate. He chewed a hole in the same place. We put her back into isolation and medicated the area until it was healed again. A few days later she became lethargic and stopped eating and drinking. She died within 12 hours. Several hours before she died she developed a strong oder like rotting flesh. We figure that the poison from the spider had spread through out her system and finally killed her. The reason for the other gliders chewing on her back was that they could smell the contaminated area and were trying to help her by grooming it.

The brown recluse spider can be fatal to both pets and people. I did a search about them and there are some gross pictures about what they do to people.

I'm very sorry for your loss. He was a cutie.

Yes, brown recluse's pioson eats tissues so they are as deadly to humans as they are to animals. They also like to hide in places close to and in where humans consider home, folded towels, closets, wood piles, etc. Is there a list somewhere of spiders that are dangerous to suggies when they are bitten or eat them? Just curious to know if anyone has one.

[:"green"]Egads! We have brown recluses at our vacation home in West Virginia. Now I'm going to be extra cautious whenever we go there. Hmmm, wondering how I can keep the spiders from being able to get to my suggies...
This has definitely been a "heads up" for me & mine!

I'm sooo sorry to hear about your baby

Spiders are scarey things so as soon as I read your story I started researching on hobo spiders... I found this map showing where they are most prominant. I think this map is on hobospider.org if the link doesn't work.

Pay special attention to your other baby Oni who probably misses Trevor as much as you do!

Nekochan, OMG! That's so sad. Hang in there! That's the first time I've ever heard of that happening around here. At least you yourself weren't bitten.

OMG I love spiders, but I couldn't imagine having those deadly animals in my house! Brown Recluse spiders are just so toxic! Man, I couldn't even imagine! It would be like living in a home where random Great White Sharks could be found romping about. Scary! I'd be stepping on them too, with a thick boot on or spraying them with RAID! That is so incredibly dangerous!

Sorry to hear.. I never thought of that as a risk..or that something like that could happen. I do know, however, that I keep my room spider free. I kill every single one of them inside because I was biten by a brown recluse a few years ago- I ended up in the hospital on IVs and now I have this horrible scar on my arm .. I couldn't imagine a spider bite on a glider.

I know the brown recluse is BAD, never heard for the hobo. We live in a rural setting and spiders are part of the setting. No matter what you do a few spiders do manage to get in the house and they do get smushed when I see them, so far no recluse. Do I need to worry about all spiders?

I love spiders and have done a lot of research on them to try to separate myths from reality. As far as spider-bites regarding people and animals are concerned, well.............

Never mind.

Sorry Annie's Dad - I'm not a spider lover and I do smush them. One bit my husband a few month's back (not a brown recluse) and he had to get a shot. He is one of those people who has bad reactions to things like that. Anyway, since you have done research on spiders - do I need to worry about any kind of spider biting the glider?

I am not paranoid about spiders but the brown recluse and the black widow spider should not be taken lightly. About the time we were taking our glider to the vet for spider bite treatment we happened to mentioned it to a checker at one of the WalMart stores. She told us that one of the mechanics in their shop had a car on the rack and a brown recluse bit him on the neck. He died in less than a week. Take a look at this site for pictures of people who have been bitten by brown recluses:

http://www.surviveoutdoors.com/emergency/spiderbites_recluse.asp

Don't think I want a brown recluse as a pet.

Yeah, I've seen some crazy recluse bites in my time. They get horrific! Those pics just say it all.

Back when I was 18 and owned a black widow spider, the same trader tried to sell me a brown recluse and I looked at it carefully as he took it out of a small container. It was such an ordinary-looking brown spider with nothing particularly special about its appearance, but we both knew it was one of the deadliest arthropods alive! I declined his offer accordingly.

They really are dangerous! Please be safe, all you who share the same soils as the recluse...

Well, off topic, sort of, but we had to kill a Hobo last night. (I honestly do hate to kill ANYTHING)...but my son fell asleep watching a movie on the floor, and one was running at him, about an inch from his face... If I can get it into a jar or something, I'll put it outside, but there just wasn't time. Any suggestions on keeping them OUT of the house in the first place?

I've seen with my own eyes the spider that bit a 4 year old boy and the huge leision that ensued.

That boy is now 14 but a big 11 inch wound mark adorns his right leg.

The brown recluse spider, though demanding respect, has always in my mind remained one of the most dangerous creatures on this earth.

Wow...this thread was an eye opener!

First off, I am SO sorry to hear about Trevor's tragedy. Thanks so much for passing along the info so the rest of us can be aware.

Second...EEW EEW EWW!! Now I'm all crawly because I am one of the lucky few states that actually has these dag gone brown recluses. I absolutely LOATHE spiders and any found in my house, die immediately. My man says I can actually walk into a room and detect the spiders in there. UGH...what a superhero trait huh? Back to your regularly scheduled topic...

Again...my very serious condolences.
