Hello and thanks for your help in advance: What questions should be asked of a local breeder before deciding to purchase one of their sugar gliders?

First off, you need to ask what diet they are on, how old they are, you'll want to see the cages they keep them in. You'll want to see the parents, and possibly hold them to see just how tame and bonded they are with the breeder. You need to ask about lineage as well, to make sure the joeys aren't coming from inbred gliders. Other people will have more suggestions, I know. These are just a few.

I would ask them how long they've been breeding. What diets they integrate into their system. How often do they handle the babies before a buyer picks up. Can you come over and *see* the joeys and parents? You can get to know a lot about the breeder from their environment. If their willing to let you come and see their suggies, take them up on that offer. I see you're in Illinois. I know a breeder in Illinois in the Aurora area that I can always recommend. My Derek came from her and not only do I love him, but I love her to death as well. She's really awesome.

Hey Shanna, The breeder I am researching is in Aurora. I wonder if they are one in the same. Would you mind giving me the name of the breeder your recommend? I haven't decided if I will get another glider yet. I am doing a little research and looking into possibilites. Thanks for your help!!

I'm sure your reffering to Katrina at Zenexotics.com and she is awesome. I got my cupid from her. Always go visit before buying from any one if your with in picking up distance. Your in the glider world, every one here knows something about every one just about, so ask for opinons!

Asking for opinions is very helpful! I myself have found some smaller breeders with no reputation that I could find actually gave me friendlier joeys than a more well-known breeder I went through... I think visiting yourself and seeing the breeder handle the gliders, seeing the cages, hearing about their diet, are all very important.

Derek, Penelope, and Jeremiah came from her, and they are so cool. Seriously, I can't say enough good things about Katarina and her babies. A friend of mine bought two babies from her as well, and is also very happy. Just all around awesome experiences.

Might want to ask if any of the gliders they have sold have ever come back or been informed as having health problems. If you go to the breeder, is the place clean? Do the cages smell, do the gliders smell? Is there fresh water? Lots of toys? Just basic things that indicate healthy and well taken care of gliders.
