I wanted to make a cool, colorful, dangly string of pieces of colored leather for my gliders. Kind of odd to describe, but picture a bunch of odd shaped leather pieces strung up on a leather "string" with a wood bead (unfinished) inbetween each piece to space them out. My question is this. The leather came in a pack of pieces from Hobby Lobby, but doesn't show any information about what the color comes from. It looks really cool, but will it be safe?

I've attached a picture of it. It was in the cage for the photo, but not in there with the gliders.

ok, I have read that leather is sometimes preserved with chemicals that can be bad for gliders, so I have nothing leather in the cage. I do not know how true that is, but I read it somewhere a while ago, and I have never used anything leather as a toy for our girls because of it. Hope that helps!

Unfortunately, not knowing what the leather was tanned with (possible toxic chemicals) or what it was dyed with (also possibly toxic dyes) I would say no to it being a glider toy.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I could have missed the pain

If you buy leather strips and pieces from Bird Toy Suppliers, you would be ok that it is veggie tanned and not chemically tanned... You may at that point be able to dye it yourself with food dye... Might turn out as bright and colorful as you would hope, but it would be safe?? Never tried it, i stay clear of leather myself as i'm just worried about the chemicals.
