I just made my first batch of HPW - it sure was easy and smelled much better than BML. It made me over two and a half months worth for my two gliders. Will it stay fresh in the freezer that long? I froze part in a freezer dish and most of it in ice cube trays.

I use to make my BML dishes up 5 or 6 days in advance. I'd put BML and frozen vegies in a divided dish and freeze them then just added fresh fruit when I took it out at night. Is there anyway to do this with HPW? Seems like the frozen mixed vegetables I used with BML don't work as well with HPW - the whole calcium/phosphorus ratio thing. Does anyone make their dishes up in advance?

Finally - just a check. I'm feeding them turnip greens, green beans, raspberries and cantalope tonight. If I total the calcium it equals 8 and the phos equals 4. Seems like my ratio is OK - am I doing this right???

Thanks for the help transitioning. I'll be curious to see how it goes. By the way, I'm giving them half BML and HPW and two fruits and vegies they are use to and two they are not.

sounds like you're on the right track. I am not sure how long it will keep in the freezer, I have 7 gliders so mine doesn't last nearly that long. I have a double batch in the freezer for about a month. So far no problem.
I would watch for ice crystals starting to form and then it's probably time to get a fresh batch.
I put all mine in a bowl with lid and I have never had trouble, the ice trays were more difficult with HPW so I stopped that after the 1st time.

Where do you find the calcium and phosphorous listed for the various fruits and veggies? I haven't run across this, yet.

I wondered about the ice trays - that is why I also put some in a freezer dish to see which worked best. I'm also wondering if I should cut the recipe in half so I'm not making as much at a time. I only have two gliders and at a tablespoon a day it sure makes a lot!

You could cut the recipe in 1/2 but I really don't think it's gonna be a problem. There are lots of people feeding HPW that only have a couple gliders and I haven't seen any problems posted.

You may try to get in touch with SRLB she feeds HPW and has for a long time she probably knows how long you can keep it frozen.

Actually the green beans, peas, carrots, and corn mixture that is fed with the BML is the same veggies and only veggies I have been feeding my gliders since they have been on the HPW diet for many years now. They are fine. Blood work comes out great and the xrays always show good bones. thumb

As for keeping it in the freezer, I know many that tried ice cubes, but once they realized how easy it truly is to scoop out, they didnt go back to ice cubes.

Trigger is correct, it will keep as long as there are no ice crystals on them. I have always had mine in a tupperware bowl with an airtight lid and I normally make enough to last me about 2 months, never had any issues with it.

Ahh, so you feed them that veggie mix every day? Do you monitor the ratio with the fruits to balance it out? Sorry, I will be getting my first babies Tuesday, and I want to be absolutely sure I have it all straight.

Thanks - sounds like the ice cube trays don't work as well as they did with BML. Makes so much I think it would stay fresher in a freezer dish too. Live and learn I guess!

It is good to know that gliders do well on the mixed vegies from BML. I've gotten so caught up in the calcium/phosphorus ratio that I was going a bit nuts. I'm starting to think I should make the food dishes up a few days in advance with fruits and vegetables then add the HPW instead of the other way around. I'll figure it all out eventually.

I'm very curious to see how they do tonight.

My gliders do not eat fruits, even though they are offered every night...they MIGHT pick at some occassionally, but hardly at all truth be told....

I have never added calcium, nor vitamins as there is already some in the HPW mix. I have never been one to do the whole ratio count, however I DO take at least a couple of my gliders, from different cages in a minimum of once a year to have blood work and xrays done on them to make sure everything is going good.

Thank God and knock on wood, I have NOT had to have a glider of mine in for ANY type of illness.

I do have one glider here that although she eats up a storm she is way too tiny, or at least for my liking, but even with her, taking her in, blood work, xrays, everything is fine.

So I follow the saying...why fix it if it isnt broken? I will continue to feed just what I do, after all, in six years, no ill gliders, no ill effects....honestly I have no worries at all about the health and well being of my gliders. thumb

The batch I make lasts about a month in the fridge. I freeze in ice cube trays, then take the cubes out and store in ziploc baggies. Haven't had any problems.

I'm excited to try the HPW. I like having more freedom with the fruits and vegetables and am really reassured by you Peggy - the whole 2:1 stuff was making me a bit nuts. I like I can still use the mixed vegetable and add other vegies in. I also have a bearded dragon so we always have collard and turnip greens in the house. My gliders don't like peas but of course love corn. They will eat fruit sometimes but not always. They seem to need a lot of variety there.

I just found the HPW subforum under diet and nutrition - lots of good info there. Duh - should have looked there first! Toyanne - you may want to check it out.

I am curious to see if I like the trays or the freezer dish. If the trays work I would like to try putting the cubes in a freezer bad. The BML was hard to scoop out of the dish when I tried it. The HPW does seem more liquid y.

Thanks again!

I think it is better for ME and MY gliders, but to say it is better than any other diet out there, would just be based on a personal opinion.

Unfortunately, there is still not enough known about gliders and what diet would be *best* for them, but I can say both of these diets (HPW and BML) have been used for years successfully. thumb

I think it is impossible to say one diet is better than another. There hasn't been enough research.

However, I do agree with Peggy - it is better for *me* and for my gliders. It is easier for me to make, and my gliders love it and look great.

I just put the food in their cage and Meeko has his nose right in the HPW - he's alternating that and the turnip greens! What a riot! I think Gus better get moving before it is all gone!

I love the hpw...all my gliders like it and most of them eat all the fruits and veggies...maybe leaving some in the bowls in the mornings.

I always offer papaya since it has a good ratio and mix in some other fruits...and mine love cucumbers and celery (I dont have that often so they get it occasionally) and sweet potatoes. Renny is a pea junkie...the first thing she goes for!

I too dont think there's a good answer on which diet is "better". Ive used both bml and hpw, I like hpw better, since it helps the odor of the boys and there is none left over in the mornings. I'd always have some bml left in the bowls. Glider owners have used both with good results.

I have used both and had no problems healthwise or stink wise.
My crew just got to where they would not eat the BML so I switched because I wanted them to eat more of their food.

Mine go thru phases when they don't eat as well as I want and act like they may be bored with the HPW.
I give them a couple nights break and give boiled chicken or fish and yogurt with different fruits & vegis.
That works well at our house.

I think we will stay with the switch to HPW. It was totally gone this morning! All the cantalope, turnip greens and beans were gone. The BML was barely touched. Apparently the boys don't like raspberries - they were left behind.

Thanks for all the help!

Glad your guys went crazy over the HPW. One thing I noticed with the switch was my crews fur, after a few weeks on the HPW their fur is like silk.

It's less messy and smelly than bml. My gliders wouldn't touch the bml but they like the HPW very much. Nutritionally, I have no idea. Personally, I like the ingredients better.

My crew is on HPW and it does work well on their coat & smell. It's easy to make & store. I use a tupperware type flat container and just scoop out a tblsp. for each one of them and then have fruit or veggies on the side. I make up a berry medley and a veggie medley to alternate each night and then offer some apple slices, yogurt or baby food chicken occassionally as a treat. I put mixed veggies (no lima beans) in the blender with a little apple juice and then freeze in ice trays. Same with the mixed fruit. You can buy a berry medley in the frozen foods section and I do that same as the veggies. Some nights all is gone and some nights not, but the HPW is always gone! They have days like us, I'm sure and don't eat as much as other days. I have also noticed how nice their coats are! In fact, my one rescue, Meiko, came to me with no fur on the bottom 3rd of his tail, and now has a beautiful full tail! It works!
Sorry soooo long!

HPW is supposed to be fed 1 & 1/2 teaspoon(1/2 tablespoon)per glider not 1 tablspoon per glider along with 1 tablespoon per glider fruits and 1 tablespoon per glider vegis.

I figured you did , but wanted to make sure anyone who wouldn't know only feeds 1/2 tablespoon. LOL

We'd be having some more fluffy gliders running around.
