I have been gone most of the day. When I got back gone I checked on my babies like I always do. Calypso somehow, pulled the fleece from her wonton toy into her little plastic elephant watering can. When I finally worked her out, she was SOAKED in urine and very weak. I immediately turned her over to check her pouch. The babies were still IP and pink but her pouch was gapped open. I wrapped her in fleece and tried to dry her while my daughter got a bottle of pedialyte. An hour later, she's dry and warm, has a little bit of strength and has drank probably 10 cc's, at least. She's resting in my hand in a pouch right now. What else should I do or do I need to take her to the vet???

Have you checked her for dehydration (the tent test)? Just wondering if she might need sub-q fluids or not. Will she eat anything - maybe even a little yogurt or something - to try and get her strength up a little more? hug2 to you both.

Connie, from the sounds of it she's going to be OK. Do what feels right to you. If you want her to see the vet, give them a call.

She is dehydrated but she's drank pretty much non-stop. I measured the pedialyte and she's drank about 2 tsp and is refusing liquid now so I assume she's full. She ate 1/4-1/2 tsp of a grape. I have what I need to sub-q her. Should I go ahead and do it for the next 24-48 hours? She's slowly getting her energy back but I'm also worried about the joeys IP. I'm sure her pouch got soaked with urine. She's grooming her face but resting every minute or so. She's exhausted.

Wow......close call......................thank goodness you got to her in time!!! have you pinched the skin between her shoulder blades to check for dehydration?? If it stays up she is dehydrated if it goes down pretty quickly she is not. Gliders dehydrate so quickly. Their metabolism is so quick! I agree with Rachel........YOU can see her, YOU are the one with her and YOU know her best.............do what feels right. Good luck to you both (and the joeys as well) smile

I would have her checked out by your vet.

Is she eating anything else yet? She needs protein for the joeys especially after this. Poor baby..poor you! I hope her and the joeys will be alright.

She'll clean her pouch just fine. You just worry about her and she will take care of the joeys.

Have you ever sq'd before? I'd say if she drank that much, and you continue to offer liquids, liquid food, like HPW, watery food like grapes, and she takes it every 30 minutes to an hour for the next few hours, she should be fine.

If your a pro at sqing, then go ahead and do it, but if not, I'd just offer liquids... unless of course she won't take them at all.

LOL! I've decided to go ahead and sub-q her for a couple days and keep her with me tonight. I've given her a super worm (I even pulled the head off so she didn't have to fight with it). She's asleep in my hand again, holding onto my fingers. Poor baby is so exhausted! She sleeps for a few minutes then drinks or eats then goes back to sleep. I love all my gliders but Cally is my favorite. It breaks my heart to see her like this. She's usually all over the place!

She's such a good girl! She held perfectly still while I sub-q'd her on both sides. Then she ate a full cc of HPW and climbed into my bra. She's holding my fingers and sleeping now so I think I'll just let her rest for the next hour then offer more liquids. She does seem to be doing better now, as far as energy and alertness. Whew! I'm going to call my vet tomorrow and fill her in and see if she wants me to bring her in. Don't worry. I will keep a very close eye on her all night. Thank you for being here for me!
Mods, you can move this now. I think the emergency is over.

I want to point out, this was a FREAK accident! It was NOT caused by the wonton toy or the watering can! They just happened to be in the wrong places at the wrong time.

She slept on me ALL night. I tried putting her in the travel cage and had it on the bed. She sat at the mesh and stared at me. I opened it and she climbed up my arm and into my bra. Every hour I would take her out and offer HPW and water. I also had to keep tucking one of the joeys back into the pouch. OMG, talk about SCARY! It's so tiny but fully formed! I really wanted to peek and see if I could tell the gender but I forced myself not to. grin After the first hour after I found her, she refused the pedialyte. She wasn't worse this morning but she wasn't any better and I just didn't feel right. upset You know, the mother instinct thing. I called my vet and they told me to bring her in at 3:00. Yeah, right. Like I was going to wait that long! I left right after I hung up (you knew I was going immediately, didn't ya? roflmao ). She took her right in. She knows me well enough to know to trust my judgment on my babies. She took her temp and it was 96!!! cry ooo worried My poor baby had a temperature! She gave her an antibiotic shot and sent antibiotics home with me. She did a urine test from where she peed on the exam table. There wasn't enough to do a dip test so she smeared it on a slide and said she'll read it after it dries and call me this afternoon with the results. Her weight is 96.22 grams. She's been eating HPW and drinking water. I sub-q'd and gave her the antibiotic at noon.

Right now, she's back in my bra, sleeping. I'm going to give her Bene-bac this afternoon to help boost her immune system. I have to go get more.

I'd sure appreciate positive thoughts for my Calypso and her 2 IP joeys.

Update on Calypso.

This morning she seemed a bit more energetic so after her med and sub-q (which she has learned to anticipate and despise, but she's still dehydrated, so....) I put her in with her cage mate, Andre'. Well, to put it nicely, she doesn't smell very nice and certainly NOT like HIS Calypso! He freaked out, not recognizing her scent (which is still very aromatic!), therefore, not recognizing HER. She was thrilled to see him and immediately started grooming him. But, he wasn't having any of it and jumped out of the pouch. I removed her and the pouch and kept her in my shirt, in the pouch, most of the day. She was mostly OK with this since the pouch smelled like him and I think it comforted her. She still spent about 4 hours in my bra tho. (My chest is so scratched up, I don't think it'll ever heal).

At dinner time, I tried putting them together again and apparently, she still doesn't smell good enough yet for his liking. I kept them both in the hospital cage with the side unzipped so I could reach in and stop any balling up or disagreements. At one point, he very carefully tiptoed over to inspect her, crabbed and ran back under the fleece. Then she tried looking for him and he crabbed again when she found him. Sigh. I put him back in his cage with the pouch and I'll try again tomorrow. I may have to just re-intro them again!

I gave her the antibiotic, which thankfully, she loves, and sub-q'd her again. She ate more of the HPW, which is about all she's been willing to eat the last two days. I wiped a drop of honey on her mouth yesterday, to give her some energy and she's eaten a few bites of grape here and there. Tonight tho, she actually ate two strawberry yoggies, so I was pretty thrilled that she is getting her appetite back. Right now, she's sleeping in my hair on my shoulder, which I think is good, because she feels better enough to be out of my bra. She's done a lot of grooming sneezing today, but still has a way to go before she's squeaky clean. I'm hoping she'll start eating solids tomorrow. If she won't in the morning, then I'm going to blend her fruits & veggies with the HPW to see if she'll eat it.

I'm very glad I took her to the vet BUT I am upset with myself that I didn't take her that night, instead of waiting to see how she was in the morning. If I had it to do again, and if I EVER remotely feel concerned about any of my gliders, I won't take a "wait and see" stance...I will go to the vet ASAP! This has taught me just how fragile these precious angels are. As far as I am concerned, there will NEVER be a "wait and see" situation with my fur babies. I consider myself extremely lucky that Calypso is getting better, despite my delay in vet treatment. I did not stop to realize how the stress would affect her and how long it would take her to recover from this "little freak accident". If she had died, I would never have forgiven myself. For my babies, there will no longer be any "small accidents". Taking them to the vet will now and forever, be a given, not a maybe.

Connie, I am so glad to hear she's feeling better. I agree about the vet, it is ALWAYS better safe than sorry & with these fragile, precious babies - it is so important to get them in fast when you have any doubts. hug2 hug2 You are a wonderful glider mom and I sure hope Calypso's honey accepts her back soon.

Glad to hear Calypso's doing so well...have you thought about wiping her down with an unscented baby wipe maybe, to um...make her a little less aromatic, and more like what Andre is used to?
