I don't know if she has yet another UTI but tonight I offered them waxies (usually her fav) and she would not touch them. Then she came out and she seemed to be straining to go potty. Then she climbed the side and 'huff-huff', again trying to potty. Her tail and all around her cloaca is wet. I took her out, although not dehydrated, she has lost weight (she actually feels boney). So tomorrow I will be bringing her in. She did go potty on me, she has really nasty diarrhea. I am going to give her some pedialyte, just in case. I know you are not vets, but any ideas? She just recently got an all clear fecal, so don't know what to think. I can see her sides moving (like she is straining to go poo, but as I said, she has diarrhea.) I am very concerned for her. I have always been concerned because of how she lived for three years before coming here. I pray those three years are not coming back to hurt her now. Please keep Roo in your thoughts and prayers.

Read through the Giardia post I started a week or so ago. It doesn't always show up in the tests.

Have her checked for Giardia, Bacterial infection, UTI. Make sure she gets a fecal and urine both.

I have one now that just got over Giardia but is still fighting bacterial infection and HLP. They can go down fast, if she seems dehydrated, take her in right away unless you can sub q yourself. Get her on Pedialyte right away.

Prayers for Roo!

Mary, my post sounds rude to me! I didn't mean it to be. Giardia is the first thing I thought of. Pedialyte would not hurt her at all either way, so go for it. Have they had any citrus type stuff lately? Maybe she hogged it all and is paying for it.

Really? She was treated (twice) for UTI. How do they check then? She has never turned down a waxie, so I know she is not feeling good. I will watch her closely and if needed will call the vets tonight. She isn't dehydrated. What is the treatment for Giardia? (I will try to search for it now, but for some reason anytime I search, I always seem to get 'not found'.)

I feed the PP diet, so it has oj in it. Something is going on with her. When she went (on me) the smell almost knocked me over. Does Giardia give them really stinky poo?

It wasn't rude. Anything that can give me some ideas is greatly appreciated.

Mary, a UTI or gerdia can both smell. Was her urine clear or did it leave a color on you?

I think you are really smart to take her in as soon as you can to get a jump start on what's going on

The only treatment for Giardia is Flagyl. As Ellen said, both Giardia and UTI can smell really bad. Giardia can sometimes (again, not always) also have yellowish colored poo and/or runny poo with it. But do watch hydration levels, as even if there is no diarrhea with the Giardia, dehydration can come on quickly and take them downhill really fast. (If it is Giardia, it may have become active because of the recent UTI's she has been fighting, it can show up when their systems are worn out/over-taxed). I hope she is ok! hug2

It left an orangy stain on my shirt (which was off white) but then she also pooped so don't know if it was missed with it. When I lifted her out of her cage, she stunk. Then I cleaned her off, and she pooped on my arm and it really stunk badly. I saw two 'stains' on the paper both were poo, but one looked like it was all liquid. She was treated with Baytril for 21 days the last time she 'made the noise'. Would Baytril cover her for the Giardia?

No, Baytril won't work on Giardia, as only Flagyl (Metronidazole) will treat Giardia. sounds like it could be Giardia, but it's hard to know for sure without a fecal. Giardia is typically characterized by yellowish, mucusy diarrhea (that smells very bad)- but as I said, not all gliders will have any or all of that. Maia got really sick but her poo was completely normal the entire time.

Ok, I think this is what we are facing. Although her poo is very dark brown. She is losing weight (which at first was great, but now she is getting too thin.) I just cleaned their cage, but will do it again (or should I just wait until I take them out to the vets tomorrow?) I will take both (she is in with Petey.) My head is spinning. I had to take one of my dogs to the vets last week (over 400.00 later....). Please pray for my little girl. I have a feeling we are in for a bumpy ride.

If you suspect Giardia, clean a LOT! Today and tomorrow, and the next day, and so on. Clean your hands really well, might even change clothes, esp if she poo'd on you.

Mary, Keeping Roo in my prayers. It does sound like giardia, one of the gliders that came from (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets had orangie poop and she tested positive for it. It does smell awful too.

Have the float and smear done.

I already changed (twice). I just gave her some pedialyte (she didn't want it, but I got some down her.) So when they did her fecal, they could have missed it? I feel awful if she has had this and I somehow missed it (although she has not been huffing, straining, etc until tonight). Poor thing, she even bit me tonight (she never bites!) So Petey should be treated as well. But how will they know? Can they see it under the microscope? Do I need to worry about my other gliders (they are in the same room)?

Oh, btw, I smelled her, she smelled like urine. The thing is she is staying in this house I have in there, and that is not her normal sleeping place. Could it be she stinks from going the bathroom in there? I am grasping for straws, I know. I have always been concerned for her, with how she lived for so long. Makes me so darn angry. I hope and pray if it is Giardia the meds will help her. Will she need pain meds too?

Mary, Giardia is missed quite often. Many times it is diagnosed symptomatically.

She will not eat anything. She just wants to curl up in that house. Staying away from Petey, too. I will give her more pedialyte in a little while.

Can you get her to a vet tonight? It does sound like Giardia, and the fact that she is separating herself from the others is a really bad sign. She could have more than one thing going on. Giardia may not show up in a float, they may have to do a "fecal trichrome". Please get her to a vet ASAP.

They will both need to be treated for Giardia, otherwise they could just end up passing it back and forth, and you will want to clean EVERYTHING well and often as Shawna said (hot water and bleach are very helpful).

Change clothes anytime they are on you or you handle them and do not let them play in the same play area as the other gliders. I would watch your other gliders for signs of infection as well, just in case.

Even after you get clean fecals, remember to check them again in 2 months and then again 2-3 months after that (and probably again 3 months after that). Giardia can be tricky to get rid of, particularly in a glider that has a lowered immune system and with Roo recently fighting off two UTI's she fits right into that category. Let us know how everything goes tomorrow. hug2

I agree, Giardia can also be passed to humans and other pets, that's why handwashing between every handling is so important.
Be sure the bleach is diluted 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, and don't use it with the gliders in the room, and don't let them go back to the cage until it is completely dry.

You should quarintine her and her mate if you haven't already so it doesn't spread to all of your gliders. I've heard it can spread very easily. I agree with Gretchen, watch the others very close as well, incase it spread to them.

Good luck, prayers for Roo coming. hug2

Does Giardia make them not want to eat anything? I tried again, she turned her face. But she did drink water for me.

Giardia doesn't usually make them loose their appetite, Roo may have a bacterial infection. Giardia will cause them to loose weight as it will block the absorbtion of nutrients.

I am so sorry you have a sick baby Mary, you have really been run through the mill with your babies.

Keep Roo warm and offer her fluids often until you can get her to the vet. If she starts to show sign of lethargy, get her in to the vet asap.

It did for Maia, that's the first indication I had that something was wrong, because she wasn't eating very well. My vet said that is one of the symptoms. dunno From there she got extremely dehydrated, extremely quickly (eventhough she never had any diarrhea).

It could be something other than Giardia, as has been said, without confirmation, there is no way to know for sure, but I would be there as soon as the vet office opens tomorrow to find out.

Mary, I didn't have time to read all the thread but wanted to make sure this got in...

Have them do BOTH float and smear. Float doesn't tell anything specific, really-poops usually sink (when normal looking), but if it does float, indicating there may be a parasite, it can indicate their presence. However, a smear will give a better look under a microscope, as opposed to whether it floats/sinks-and with diarrhea I'm not sure if they can do a float-in my opinion the smear is the more valuable of the two.

Treatment for Giardia is usually Flagyl (metronidazole)

Hopefully work will allow me to finish reading through this tonight, forgive me if that's info you already had, but it's insane here, so I'm not counting on it. Will check for update tho- hug2
