I saw my babies 1 hour and 15 minutes ago, thinking they were mating. They`re both around 5 1/2 months-6 months old. He`s been hanging onto her this whole time making her support his weight hanging from the cage. I stuck my hand in a pouch to help support her cuz she`s a petite lil thing. The thing is, I don`t see any part of him inside of her! He has his hind feet latched onto her rear end and biting her neck(I know they do this when mating). But I don`t see him doing anything to her! Is this normal??!! I finally was able to make her grab onto the pouch and I laid them on the bottom of the cage so her little arms can rest but should I try to break them up? Is it normal to not see him in her? I mean, when I first saw them, he was doing the motions but now its nothing. I hope somebody is awake out there who can help me now! Please tell me, should I leave them alone? I`m still new with these guys! I don`t know what to expect. Please help!

[:"green"]It sounds like they're going through the normal mating process. Even though she's smaller than him, she is probably strong enough to withstand his weight. The males will often go through a long preparation process before actually copulating. This is probably what you witnessed and why you didn't see anything inserted. I would leave them alone unless she starts to really crab loudly at him. Then you might want to give her a bit of a rest for a half hour or so.

well she does try to get away but he wont let her. I tried to brib them apart with yogurt drops, they both were happy to accept but he wouldn`t let her go. Is it normal for him to do this to her for this long? Will he hurt her? Do you think its safe for me to go to sleep lol? I was so scared but you eased my mind. Thank you so much!

[:"green"]Everything you're describing is normal. She will crab and object to his persistence. He will continue to try. Yes, it's fine for you to go to sleep. Everything will be okay. Sometimes when Allira and Gizmo are mating, we have to put their cage in another room cuz they get so vocal with each other that it keeps us awake otherwise. If she's barking, then I definitely say you have nothing to worry about.

[:"green"]You're very welcome. Go get some sleep now . You're probably as exhausted as Nina is...

Oh I am exhausted lol and poor Nina!! Nicky rode her back until around 8:00 this morning! I felt so terrible for her They would fight once in awhile and I think that`s how Nina freed herself once. They both nibbled at some food for only a couple minutes and he was right back on her. She wasn`t a happy camper and she would look over at me like "what is he doing to me" or "help me mommy". It made me sad. She didn`t get to run, play, eat or drink last night, only a few nibbles mostly at 8 a.m. then they went to bed. They woke me up several times also lol. Do they do this often? I wonder if they should be separated at all so they can a night to eat and play normally lol. I just hope this doesn`t happen every night, I don`t think the poor girl can handle it lol Wow, what would I have done without you??!! Thanks again!

They do this about once a month or so, and they will do it all day and all night. They usually don't eat during this time, either. So don't panic if most of their food is still in the bowl the next morning. Like Suz said, only separate them if she gets really loud, or they start fighting.

my baby is pregnant and i never heard or saw them mating. it scares me... I figured with them being in my room when i sleep i would know when they mate. but i never heard them. Every little noise they make wakes me up... a hiss a bark a crab.. everything.... do they normally do it in a pouch or just out and about? are there any signs of when they have done it except a month later when i have a baby in pouch?

Thanks Shawna! You`re right, they hardly touched their food but I did give Nina a grape while Nicky was latched onto her lol. When they were done this morning, they did eat a little before they went to bed but most veggies and fruit was still there and this morning when I got up I gave them crickets which they ate. I did notice Nicky was starting to latch onto her again but at least this time they were in the pouch so Nina didn`t have to carry his fat rear end around lol. I just felt so bad for her cuz she`s so tiny and he`s bigger and she was giving him piggy back rides all night long! It was so sad. I hope this does end soon like you say.I never even heard of them acting like this and it scared me to death after an hour and a half of it. I was wondering if he was slowly trying to kill her because he was constantly biting her neck. I do know they do this when they mate though but I felt something was wrong. This is a little off topic but I know sometimes the male will bite a hole in the females neck...what do you do if he does this?? Rush her to the vet? Or can I treat the wound with neosporin or something?

Marlena, this is my first experience with this but they did it all around the cage and this a.m. it looked like he was going to start all over again in the pouch but he didn`t seem as persistant as last night. I`m not sure if he continued, I had to leave. Most of the time they were very quiet about it. They may have done this before and I may not know about it. Just sometimes they did fight, I think Nina wanted him off and that`s how she freed herself 2 times. That part would wake me up. I guess they could do this without fighting. Maybe someone else will know for sure.

Thanks for all your help everyone! It is appreciated so much!

[:"green"] [/] She will crab and object to his persistence

[:"black"] [/] Sugarglidersuz, I know you said that this is ok, but what if she`s fighting him because she`s not ready....I mean, could this be why she`s fighting him? She`s not fighting constantly but she does. I`m just concerned because they`re both around 6 months old. I`m beginning to wonder if they should be separated for a month or two. I just don`t want her being forced if she`s not ready. I`d like to hear different opinions about this. Thanks!

Hi. I have a female who is almost 2 yrs and a male who is about 6 months. They did they same thing when they mated. She carried him around all night and occassionally fought him, but when I seperated them she was more upset then he was. I think the fighting is just part of the mating ritual. I mean unless she is crabbing real loudly and continusly fighting him. 5 months is a little young for her to have babies though but as long as you keep an eye on her and make sure to give her extra protien she should be fine. I would think

Thanks Jandk! That`s very encouraging to know that even a 2 year old female will fight him too. Maybe being that she doesn`t try to fight him everytime may mean that she`s ready? I know I keep repeating myself lol, but I don`t want her to be forced, but I am excited for babies! I would wait for the babies though, I just don`t want my baby to get hurt being 6 months old. I have been giving more protein just to be safe. I`d hate to separate them, I don`t think either one would be happy about that

All sound very normal to me. Gliders will often mate for several days, won't eat much, and may or may not sleep much. If all your hearing is a soft protest, little squabbles, then I wouldn't worry to much about it. This is normal. Of course if you see injury, loud distressful noises, you could seperate them for a few days. And don't worry about her being too young, it's not ideal but it does happen. And if he is the same age as her, I am sure he is not too big. It's when you put a big much older male with a young female that you run into problems.

Marlena, I have had a few sets of gliders that I have never seen mate, yet they have had several joeys. So I guess they are just more private. Don't worry about it and good luck to the both of you with future joeys.

queenduck, I don`t know if they have mated yet but they did the piggyback thing all night several days ago. They didn`t actually mate. While doing this she fought with him several times to get him off of her and they were very vocal! I also heard her only bark during this time too. It seems almost like she was allowing it but only up to a certain point, then she had enough and she wanted him off of her. The same evening before this happened, I had to physically break yup 2 fights in the bathroom but after that when I put them back in the cage is when I saw him piggyback her. Their fights "sound" viscious but there have been no wounds. I took one or 2 bites when breaking them up and they hurt a little bit but not enough to break my skin. I`m saying, the bite hurt but not badly and i`ve taken their hard bited before. I think one was telling the other to leave him/her alone. They`ve been fighting on & off for a few weeks now and I did separate them once for 2 days. I`ve been told they are having dominence issues or preparing to mate. I think it`s mating that`s happening here.
