To all the wonderful people who gave me advice at the SGGA,

I just thought I would let you know that I took Shy to an Eye specialist and it is not, I repeat, NOT Glaucoma. It looks as tho she caught an infection, possibly due to bad diet before I got her, which caused cataracts. The Dr. still saw some inflammation around the iris's and gave me some steroid/antibiotic drops. I take her back at the end of the month to see what improvement may have been made. But no matter what she does see shadows and will soon have some extra help in her cage (besides just Rascal.) So there is hope. I just wanted to thank all of you for the wonderful advice and help that you gave her while we were there. GC is truly a second family.

So Sincerely,
Andi

I also have a glider who is mostly blind from cataracts, also due to poor diet before we adopted him.

While he doesn't glide much he is very sweet and gets around just fine! We don't really need to make special accomodations for him and he gets around just like our other glider, just a bit more near-sighted, so we hang lots of vines and ropes for him to climb around on during playtime as he doesn't like to jump very far!

Glad Rascal is doing well hug2

Andi,
I truly thought it was cataracts when I had a chance to look at Shy during the SGGA. Although I'm not a doctor nor a veterinarian, my experience with my Pika taught me a lot. I'm so glad to hear that Shy is doing well and has adapted well to her new special need. Please let me know if I can do anything to help you out with her hug2

Andi, my little girl, Pru, has cataracts from bad diet. She also sees shadows. She does well, I just am very careful to not move things around in her cage. She uses sounds alot to find things and will follow the sound of my voice when I speak to her. She lives with four other gliders and as long as they don't sneak up on her (if they do, she will crab like crazy at them), she is fine. Good luck and I hope the meds work. (Btw, she came to me that way. She is around 6 1/2 yo.)

Andi,

I have a question, do her eyes look clouded at all? One of the males I rescued in "The Peter Pan Gang" acts blind. He guides himself mainly by smell, but his eyes look clear. He has no sign of past injuries either. So I was wondering if this may also be his problem, as he was in really bad conditions when I got him. Thanks for any input.

Hammy is a good half blind in his right eye. Poor diet. (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets. Ha. Im glad I got him though! He's learning who mom is and learning that he isnt gonna get hurt. Haha. I sneak up on his right side when i pet him. Other than that hes a lunger! roflmao

Ashley, I wouldn't recommend sneaking up on his blind side. This will only continue to perpetrate his anxiety and he will continue to be a lunger. You need to make sure he sees your approach to him so that he knows to expect your touch. In time, he will stop lunging.

As stated before try not to move anything around in her cage. SHe gets use to where certain thins are and Use her other senses to help find what she needs.

Good luck! I hope you guys get a good prognosis when she goes back to the vet!!!!!

Adri,
I would definitely say Shy's eyes are clouded although that seems like the wrong descriptor for the odd misty blue color the cataracts give her eyes. Mind you, her pupils (the part that opens and closes) are the only part that are blue while her iris is still the normal black. It makes for a rather spooky look when her eyes are dilated all the way open and show only misty blue. Hope that answers your question.

Your male, since he has clear eyes rather than clouded, may have neurological damage or may have picked up an infection sometime in the past that could have caused damage to the optic nerve. Just ideas based on what I have heard cause blindness/partial blindness from my various vets. Please take with a grain of salt as I am NO expert.

Shadow, roommate to Andi
