How does a glider on a pain killer (metacam) act differently from normal?

I didn't really notice any difference when mine are on pain meds (they sleep, but normally would be during the day anyway.) They 'may' go off food a bit, as it can sometimes upset tummies. And you 'may' notice a little difference in their pottying, as sometimes certain meds can slow things down a little. Oh, and never use Metacam for more then three days, due to the risk to the kidneys.

I have noticed the following MAY occur when on pain meds. Remember, none of these happen all the time. Many times, a glider does not act different at all:

Change in appetite
lethargic
slow, deliberate movements
short bursts of activity (5 minutes or so) followed by lengthy "naps" - more noticeable than "normal."
loose stools
constipation
decrease in aggressive behavior
loss of interest in grooming
sleeping alone

Most times, however, I have noticed that with pain meds, they act like a normal happy glider.

Great! Thanks for the insight. She does appear to be acting normal, also pain free. I'm glad you told me about not using it more than three days. That's all the vet gave me doses for, but it's good to know.

Her bursts of energy all seem directed toward food, which is a good thing! roflmao

I have heard great stories about gliders and metacam - I have never used it because I had a horrible experience using it on my doxie about 5yrs ago - she only had one dose and she had violent vomiting for about 10 days. I had to give her injectable Reglan every 12hrs and that still didn't completely stop the vomiting, it just slowed it down a bit. I have never seen so much vomit in my life. Ever since that incident, every time a vet has tried to give any one of my animals Metacam, I have refused it and asked for something else.

The vet said that vomiting is a side effect of Metacam and that some animals are just more sensitive to it.

I'm sorry your doxie got so sick from it! Scratty has had three doses and aside from acting like she is starving, she is doing well on it. I'm not 100% sure it is keeping the pain down as much as I'd like, so I'd hate to think how she would feel without it. I just hope three days is enough.

What else have you used that woks for gliders?

Thanks, if she seems to need anything more I'll ask the vet about the Torb.

It's my fault she's going through all this. I feel terrible about it!

Here's an idea for you in case you need to switch to Torb:

I have the vet tech "inject" it into mealworms for me...but I make sure to keep THOSE mealies in a marked container & put them in the fridge. The mealies WILL die off from being injected, but keeping them "chilled" prolongs the process.

That's a great idea....your gliders can't taste it? About what size are your mealies? I've got some about 1 to 1 and 1/4" long. I'd call them medium, but I'm not really sure.
