Hi! I've been researching Acacia Gum for my Suggies. And I see that most of it comes from India and it is also called "Gum Arabic" which has been used in food and chewing gum for many, many years.

My questions: Is the Acacia Gum from India the same nutritional value as the Acacia Gum from Australia?

Where can I buy Australian Acacia Gum, and know that it really is from Australia?

Thank you!

You can purchase it from Exotic Nutrition
You can call them or send an email to find out exactly what their process and ordering protocol is.

Not sure we can get Austrailian Acacia Gum here. As you found, most comes from India or Africa. How knows if it's even produced in Oz.

FWIW, my gliders didn't really care for it. I could sprinkel it on their food and they would eat it, but that's not really adding anything to the diet.

Haven't heard back from Exotic Nutrition about this.
Does anyone else have any idea?

I have found a very high quality, organic Acacia Gum, but I would have to buy 500lbs.! crazy

I don't have that many Gliders - YET!

There are over 1400 species of Acacia world wide. Gum Arabic is produced commercially from usually two species of acacias (senegal and seyal) from Africa (mostly). It's also known as Vegetable gum..harvested in Africa and some parts of Asia, it is processed originally in Europe but now more so from China(more economically viable).

The acacias in Australia are different even from each other. They make up 1000 of the other species of world wide acacias and we know them collectively here as Wattles. Whilst studies have shown there are a handful of Western Australian species that can produce commercial quality gum , it has not been a commercially viable product and does not appear to have the exact same levels/type as gum arabic that is being produced commercially now overseas. Tannin has been produced commercially here from wattle but doesn't seem to be a big industry as compared to those in Asia/Africa.

Bottom line, is one acacia is a different tree to another. It produces different levels/types of gums, toxins and by products. I have yet to see any acacia gum on the shop shelves here in Australia (but must admit I have never gone looking for it as I wouldn't use it) though it does appear to be imported here (mostly from China) in commercial lots for various industry uses.

This is not to say someone isn't trying to make a living out of it here but I haven't come across them. My own access to fresh acacias trees is easy. However, despite what people may say, there appears to be limited species that gliders will actually like! It appears to be habitat specific for wild gliders in many cases so with 1000+ species to choose from, it's not an easy process to find ones that appeal to the glider. An acacia that one group of wild gliders feed from, may not be what wild gliders from a different region will feed from. Soil, climate and other extremes change viability of a feeder tree without takng into consideration the multitude of species.

My own gliders are really fussy when it comes to Acacia branches that I give them. Most they ignore (after they have checked it out for insects) whilst some they will chew the bark with vigor. They will not eat the leaves or flowers. My possums who will eat the leaves and foliage again are extremely picky what species they will eat. I often come back with huge branches of the most gorgeous flowering wattles and they turn their noses up at it. In my street alone there must be 20+ species of wattle (acacia)but most they don't like. Many times its just a pretty decoration in the cage.

Wow, Marz! That's the most information on acacia I've seen that didn't require a degree in botany to understand. Thanks!

I had a feeling the acacia gum everyone is talking about is not from any of the species of acacia gliders will or should eat. All I know is that the wrong kind could be toxic. A wild glider would know the difference, but I doubt any of mine would. I sure don't, so I just don't use it.

I'd love to visit Australia, someday!

Great info! Thank you!
I wouldn't feel bad about trying food grade Acacia Gum, as we have been injesting it without realizing it our whole lives, but would prefer to find some from Australia. And really don't want anything from China.

I purchased some from my local Pet Warehouse here in NC. It says it's "pure" ACACIA GUM and it's from "Exotic Nutrition." The web site is www.exoticnutrition.com
I paid $4.39 for 30 grams.

I checked with them. Their's comes from East Africa, and is food grade Acacia.

I'm sure it's fine. I will probably end up buying their's too.
