If we shouldn't use crickets or grasshoppers due to Aflatoxins, how about feeder roaches?

Has anyone tried them?

Not the normal household kind, the feeder ones.

My guys have just played with the lobsters so far, but there has been no eating! I just discovered that they were an acceptable insect on a thread here a week or so ago. I'm not giving up yet, though!

Feeder roaches are a wonderful feeder, very clean and very healthy! There are several different kinds, some climb and/or fly and some do not. If you don't use any grain/corn/nuts with them, they actually carry much less risk of carrying Aflatoxin than other feeders, even Mealworms. thumb

That's nice to know!
Do you know a place to find out which ones fly, climb, or not?

This is a reputable supplier, with some helpful info, but their prices seem quite high. I bought my starter colony at a reptile show for $.08 ea.

NY Worms - Feeder Roaches

I don't know about those flying roaches! Lobsters have wings, but do not fly, they use their wings to slow their descent - kind of like our gliders!

I know, it sounds gross! But I have also had crickets and mealworm Beetles on the loose in the house! Yikes!

But these aren't the same kind of roaches as the common household cockroaches. And they don't cause infestations.

I just want to make my Suggies as happy as possible. And I know I couldn't do Pinkies, so these would be next on the list.

My local pet store owner recommended feeder roaches to me a few months back... but I never really got it started because I couldn't find anything that told me how healthy they were for the gliders. I may give it another look now, though, since we're STILL out of mealies here.

Oh the things we do for our gliders!!! Yeah, it takes a while to feel "comfortable" with the roaches - 1 year with no escapees has definitely helped! I do think it would take longer than that to get used to cutting the head off or smashing the head of a superworm! Live pinkies are also awful. I gave one of my beardies one pinkie 2 years ago, and the crunching was awful ... shakehead ... that was the end of that! I had bought two, and took the other back to the petstore. Now frozen rats for my snake are NO PROBLEM! They don't move, and I'm sure they were euthanized humanely... dunno

Most feeder roaches (maybe all?) don't fly, so I may have misspoke - as far as non climbing species, some of them are;
Discoid
Guyana Orange Spotted
Orange Head
Six spotted
Turkistan

I have a friend that uses a different type of feeder roach & she just smashes their heads before she feeds them so they can't run around the cage...

Are there any kinds that are dangerous/not healthy for gliders?

Some of the larger adult feeder roaches have spines on their legs that are dangerous, so you have to remove their legs before feeding them to your glider. But you can feed the juvenile stages (before they grow the spines) while they are small without a problem.

And...don't feed household roaches or the wild caught roaches.

I'm thinking of doing feeder roaches one day, but I live in Fl and it's illegal to ship them here.

Are there any feeder supply companies in FL that sell them? That makes sense, since parts of FL have a tropical climate and they could survive if let loose.
