As many of you know, I had a huge scare with my girls yesterday and had to go to the vet, which cost $170, and we got the sub-q fluids, that would have been $40 for them both, for free. I was wondering how much a good amount of money for a vet fund would be. I'll have to start doing odd jobs all over the place, but if it means that I can get the best possible care for my babies (ferrets included), then I honestly don't care what I'll have to do.
I want to know because I hope to be able to start saving for a leu before too long.
So for three gliders and two ferrets, what would be a good amount to save up for a vet fund?

PS. If I have to save up for three years before starting to save up for a leu, then so be it. I don't NEED another sugar glider right now, but I NEED a vet fund.

I would say just start saving what you can right now, and I personally have around $300 in mine right now...I so want to dip in for my rept....but hubby said NO! he will get it. but I know a lot of people keep $500 plus in their vet fund....depending on how many gliders they have...I don't know how much you should have in yours, because I don't know what the costs are for ferret visits.......so just save what you can now i'd say.

My personal opinion, but the more you save for the vet fund the better. I dont really think theres such a thing as saving to much. I once had to take my ferret to an emergency vet, and it cost us 1,500. We didnt qualify for any of the programs to pay later. Then again, the vet was ripping us off anyways and we found that out later on.

But, either way emergencys can get expensive fast. And just in CASE you had an emergency with more then one glider, you have to be ready for that as well.

I went to carecredit.com and got a line of credit thru them,,, I asked for 5000 and got it,,, I have 10 suggies,,, they give you so many months to pay it back no interest ..it depends on how much the bill is how long they give you,,,, you still need to make sure you can handle the payments thou if you need to use the card. You also should check to see if your vet accepts the plan,,, mine does so I am lucky

The vet I go to doesn't have the care credit, but how much is pet insurance? I heard from a few sources that it's around $20 a month.

There's no such thing as too much! I have $5000 in the bank plus another $15,000 in credit cards. And I'm always worried that it won't be enough. I know how fast vet bills can climb. I had pet ins on a cat. After all was said and done, MY cost, after ins paid their part, was $3000.

I agree, I don't think you can have too much either. But I think $500 is a good goal to work toward (you are wanting $500 per animal eventually) and when you have that, then you add to it as you can.

So $500 for each animal or $500 total?

For each. You were charged $130 for two and the vet didn't even do anything invasive such as surgery or prescribe medication and luckily worked with you by giving you the sub-q fluids. I spent $800 in vet bills in one month on two gliders.

I have spent over 2000 dollars in vet bills this year alone!

Thats not including yearly shots for my dogs(2) and cats(2)

so the more the better.

$500 for each animal (minimum). But you have to get to the initial $500 first. smile

I use Care Credit (healthcare financing) which my vet accepts. I have a limit of $2,000.00 to use as I need it and make payments each month. That is something to look into if you have it in your area.

The other two vets that I called do care credit, but not the vet I went to, and I really like them. frown
Do you have to do monthly payments on CC or just when you have a vet bill to pay?

You do have to make monthly payments on the care credit, but, you also have to be 18 to establish a line of credit wink
