I`ve been checking out different types of bedding for my gliders. The plain white paper doesn`t seem to be working out good enough for us. There`s quite a few different kinds out there so how can you know what`s safe and what`s not safe? I do know that Pine and Cedar are both toxic to gliders but they have some made from coconut shells, some that have lavender and rose scents to them, and I found some kind of pellets made for small animals but don`t know if it`s safe for gliders or not. It wouldn`t even say what it was made from but it felt almost like corn cob but I don`t think that`s what it was. At another store they had one that`s supposed to really control odor really well, again, not sure what it was made of. I settled with the Aspen shavings because I do know they are safe but what about the rest of them? One more question... Do I have to worry about them chewing or eating the aspen shavings? That`s my biggest concern. I had a hamster when I was little and shavings got in his water. Obviously he was drinking when they accidently went down his throat but we found him on the floor hardly breathing, almost died, thanks to my dad he got them out and my baby lived! Of course switched to using a water bottle but back to the point.... Do I need to worry about this?

I would worry about all that..But some call me paranoid, hehe.
I use fleece on the bottom of Ziras cage...I know its safe even if she gets to it, and thats the best part! Just change it out with a new piece while your washing the other one every few days-week depending on how messy your glider/gliders is/are.

I also just use the fleece on the bottom of the cage. It is simple and easy to clean up

Many people use fleece unless you are sure your glider can't reach the substrate (and most gliders are pretty amazing with what they can get to ). As long as your glider can't get to them; Aspen is safe, the recycled paper type is ok (like Care Fresh), coconut bark is ok as well, but corn cob or the kitty litter type are not. The corn cob can grow Aspergillus mold and risks exposure to Aflatoxin, the kitty litter type of bedding can easily cause impactions.

Fleece here too. :3 I don't like to take risks so I'm just using the safest thing out there. There's no way they can hurt themsleves on it but it gets stinky fairly fast and you have to shake it out a window or outside. Otherwise, you get poo and stuck on food everywhere. But, what's positive about the fleece is it's safe, cheap, soaks up pee, doesn't get all gross and soggy, and is extremly easy to clean up. I think I'm just paranoid about other beddings too...I don't want to take chances and spend lots of money on it when I can get the fleece and keep it for a while. (I wash my fleece every week, 1 piece, and have been using it for...8months now 0.o) Ohhhh heyyyy! You're another some-what local glider slave. Neat. ^-^ Adorable baby in your avatar too.

Well I`ve gotten to the point to where I`m desperate now lol, I`m telling you I can clean the pan, cage and wheels and the room smells fresh again but by the next day these lil ones just stink up a storm! My gliders have stinky pee and I don`t understand why! I haven`t heard of too many people complain about their gliders stinking but mine do and there are a few others who complain about it. It smells like raw fish or a wet dog smell and it`s gross. I have them on the HPW diet so I know I feed them well although it makes me wonder if they get too much protein from it. Too much protein can cause them to stink. I did put the aspen in last night and I can`t smell any odor yet. I looked in the stores for that but no luck I`ve tried the fleece and really don`t like it. It got stinky too quickly and everything sticks to the fleece. I thought it was a pain to clean and wasn`t to crazy about all the urine going in my washing machine lol. I`d prefer something I can just toss in the garbage. The paper was working ok but they stick their hands down there and move it around so the urine doesn`t always hit the paper anyways lol. That`s why I figured I`d try something else. Ohhhh heyyyy! You're another some-what local glider slave. Neat. ^-^ Adorable baby in your avatar too. Cool! We`re not too far away from each other Thank you! That`s Mandy shortly after she was born in my avatar, she`s my only WFB and such a sweetie! Your babies are adorable too!

Have they been in for a check-up recently? Generally stinky pee is an indicator that something might be wrong with the glider.
Bwaha. I wash my fleece by hand in the bathroom sink. :3
Awww. ^-^ Cute and thanks.

Another thing to consider is that if your washing 'everything' at once, they will over mark until they get it to smell like them again. It's better to rotate with the cleaning and washing. Alternate by always leaving a smelly pouch and a couple of toys so that they will always have their scent around. Are they getting plenty of 'fresh water'? Sometimes if they are not getting enough water the urine does become concentrated.

No, I never wash everything at once. I clean the tray, cage and wheel usually at once but their pouches, hammocks and toys don`t get cleaned on the same day. They have plenty of fresh water too. I check their bottle every night and change the water about every 3 days. I mentioned it to my vet last time we were in and she was wondering if they`re getting too much protein. Is it only MY gliders with nasty smelling pee? Or does everyone`s gliders have smelly pee? If something is wrong with them, I`d like to know what it is Any other ideas? Please

I use plain white paper towel on the trays of my cages and change them every 3 days or so as needed. I then wipe out the tray with non-bleach or baby wipes. The plain paper towel lets you see right away if there is a problem as far as their eliminations, is cheap and easy to clean up. Works well for me & my crew.
