I need to make everyone aware of a situation that has came to my attention. I had gotten a few new gliders (while still reducing my numbers) and they have been found to have a parasite. I am treating my gliders and have offered to pay for the vet checks of those who have recently purchased gliders from me. But, I wanted to make this publicly known because one of the glider purchased was taken to the Ohio Gathering and I want to make sure EVERY glider owner that was there and MAY have come into contact with one of my gliders is aware of the situation. I have contacted the people who these gliders came from, and will let them take care of their own gliders, I WILL not start a drama post and will not go any further arguing this post my concern is with gliders and it will stay at caring for the gliders only. I do take my gliders to the vet with in a week of getting them but the parasite can stay hidden for a while so it was not noticed in past fecals until now

Kris, I'm sorry you are having to go through this and I wish your gliders all quick recoveries. This post was very responsible and may help with early detection to prevent other gliders from becoming seriously ill.

I wanted to add that the parasite these gliders may have is contagious but from what my vet has told me, it takes about a month before another glider is able to catch it.. . . .something like that. More than likely, the parasite would not have been passed during the short weekend, but it's good to know just in case.

Kris, Zaria (and Zayne) both went Friday last week (the day after I got them) and fecals were clear. I had to take Lucas today for a health cert, so took them again because Lynsie made me aware of the parasites and still all clear. I'm gonna take them back again in a week also, per the vet recommendation.

I'm taking Brando into the vet in the morning. I cant stress enough how important it is to notify people of a possible problem there may be. And Kris has gone above and beyond in letting all of us know about it. I will post again tomorrow after Brando see's our vet. Thank you again Kris!!!!

Suz there are no symptoms as far as I have seen But Lynsies glider did have some she would be better to ask... BUT I had a smear done so they could find them... Idk what the exact parasite is but my vet and Lynsies vet have told us that it is from the hook worm family.. but it is not hook worms..

Suz, I'm pretty sure that my vet just did the smear, it only took her a few mintues to run the fecal and find the parasites. She said it wasn't just a parasite, it was a class of parasites in the same family as hookworm. She did give me a really long name but it didn't even process in my brain. The only symptoms Lidia had were she had a weird bald spot on her belly below her pouch, she acted perfectly fine up until the night before last when she looked wet down there and started licking and hissing a lot. She is now on panacur and smz tmp.

Any suggestions on what would be best to clean with to destroy this wormy booger? I ask because I was part of a RR and am concerned about cross contamination. I normally do not use any toxic chemicals in my home. I do all my cleaning with vinegar, baking soda, essential oils and murphys oil soap so if I need to up my artillery before I begin my scrub down or anyone has any particular info on what it takes to kill the lil boogers I'd like to know.

Kris the infestation may not have started from the breeder you got your gliders from- it could have come from further down the line- so hopefully everyone will pass the word backwards once they hear gliders of theirs may have been at risk.

Not sure Angel, but you can't go wrong with good ol' bleach. I mean, they use it in hospitals and nurseries and not much survives it. I know I'm doing a good bleaching! Does anyone know if Suki was in direct contact with other gliders along the way? I know he shared a kennel at one point, did he not? Were they in separate pouches? Lynsie - Panacur and what else? Our vet is going to allow me to simply treat mine as if they do have the parasite because waiting a month to be sure is gonna be nerve wracking! KrisD - I know this was a difficult post to make, but you did the right thing. Being responsible isn't always fun, but in the end, no one can say anything negative because you stepped up to the plate when it was necessary.

Laurie-Suki was in my care from Sunday morning til Monday morning and he was not in direct contact with other gliders during that time. There were other gliders in the vehicle w/us but they were not involved in any of this other than their contact w/Suki in my vehicle. I kept Suki in his bonding pouch from the time I got him til we got to my house on Sunday night. I game him water and treats throughout the day but always gave them in his pouch to try and minimize his stress level. He slept in the pop up that came with him-I did add some rings and toys but those were from my home and I wash and dry everything here on the antibacterial setting on my washer and dryer. He never went past my living room or came in contact w/any of my gliders in any way. I did use our regular feeding dishes but those have all been through the dishwasher so no concerns there. I have several rescues and am a stickler for quarantine and now am very grateful for that. I can only hope that anyone who may have become lax in that area will see this post and be encouraged to always be more safe than sorry. Kris thank u for doing the responsible thing in this situation.

Laurie, each glider was in it's own pouch in the kennel. They never came in direct contact. The minute we arrived at the gathering, the glider in question was given to his new mom. Suki stayed with me the entire weekend, in his own pop up cage, with separate dishes used only for him. He was also never taken into the gathering. He stayed in my room the whole weekend. But, because they did travel together in the kennel, I am taking my girls in on Monday, just to be on the safe side.

Laurie, the lable just says smz tmp, I'm not sure exactly what it is. I fully trust my vet and told her to prescribe whatever she thought would be best for Lidia.

The SMZ TMP and Panacur are both used to treat protozoal infections such as coccidia and giardia. I had a bout with coccidia a few months ago with a glider that I rescued. She was in poor conditions when I picked her up and there were lots of cats roaming about, most likely the source of the coccidia. Coccidia has an incubation period of 13 days AFTER exposure, when Lynsie posts what exactly this is, you will have a more clear picture of how long to recheck for this. Lynsie, I saw where you said you'd call your vet Monday and get the name of this infection, in the meantime, hoping your baby gets well soon.

I just wanted everyone to know that I took Brando into the vet for a wellness and everything checked out A-OK!!! I hope this didnt scare the the beejeebee's out of everyone. Brando is a happy, healthy but "fluffy" little man. I will continue to take him in weekly for the next few weeks just to be sure. He hadnt been introduced to his new girls as of yet, and I will definately wait till I know all is clear before he does meet them. Thank you all for your concern. And thank you again Kris for my sweet little man!

Suki tested POSITIVE today for hookworms!!! Needless to say, I was FLOORED by the diagnosis! My vet did a float and a smear and tested for giardia, coccidia and parasites and he came back with a positive result for hookworms so I'm now treating ALL of my cages and cleaning and disinfecting daily until eternity or until I feel safe again!
