I just got off the phone with my vet and this is the info I got:

Most common parasite- strongyle- similar to the roundworm/hookworm family.

pre-patent period- I asked her about how long it would take for another glider to get it and she said about a month before it could show up. So, if everyone should get thier gliders tested again in about a month.

She said that it can not be transmitted to humans or other animals, it's usually per that species. It's contracted through the eggs in the feces of the gliders.

Hope that helps everyone.

Thanks for the update, Lynsie. I'm so glad to hear that she is doing better!

Thanks again for pointing out the importance of the second vet check after the 30 day quarantine!

Give Lidia one of her favorite treats for me when she feels better!

She didn't eat anything solid but she did eat all her HPW so that is good. She is looking a bit better today also. My vet will see her again tomorrow.

Well it's been a rollercoaster so far. Up and down, up and down. When Lidia finished her meds and still 100% we started her on another round of meds, different round this time. After 2 days on the new meds she was looking worse. She had diarhea again and it was pretty bad. So we took her off of that and put her back on the smz tmp. She's been on that for 3 days now and is now showing a lot of improvement. For the past almost 2 weeks her belly has been soaked and today just a little part of it is wet looking and he poops are getting thicker by the day. Hopefully we will reach the top of this rollercoaster pretty soon and hopefully we can stay there. Here are a few pics that I snapped of her just a little bit ago:

I had another fecal run on her last Fri and I am waiting for the results. My vet should be calling me with them today.

I couldn't find where the original post was so I'm not up to speed on what happened, but maybe the yeast infection is from antibiotics? would non-fat yogurt with live cultures be ok to give her?

As I said in my other post, Lidia has been diagnosed with a yeast infection. Right now she is on a topical ointment but the problem with that is Lidia will lick it off. My vet is doing some research on oral meds and wanted to know if anyone else had ever treated a sugar glider with oral meds before?

My Bittah had a yeast infection when she first started breeding four years ago. Dr. West did treat it with an oral medication... but I don't have the information on which medication she prescribed. However, if you want to have your vet call Dr. West to discuss it with her, her number is 216-321-6040. I'll search through my receipts and see if I can find the information for you...

ETA: I searched high & low and couldn't find my 2004 vet receipts frown Sorry... Hopefully Dr. West will know what she prescribed although she has changed practices and doesn't have those records anymore.

Lynsie, when Grace had her yeast infection, the vet put her on Amoxicillian. I thought that was odd since it can cause yeast infections in humans...but it worked. dunno We didn't use anything oral on the pouch itself.

Lynsie, I am so sorry about Lidia. At least you now know what she has, so it can be treated. Would an e-collar help to give the ointment a chance to work until your vet finds an oral med? Sending wishes for a speedy recovery for your little girl!

Lynsie, I'm not sure if it's applicable for animals, but for humans the treatment for yeast infections would be Flagyl.
