We have a baby that came out of the mother pouch last saturday. The problem we are having tonight is the baby keeps wanting to climb out of their sleeping pouch. It has already fell off of the pounch and landed on the bottob of the cage. I picked it back up and put it back in the sleeping pouch but it wsnts to stay at the top and climbs back out. Is this common? We have never had babies berfore. What should we do?

Thanks

From what I understand, it is not good if they do this prior to like 4-5 weeks oop. contact sugarglidersuz, she is the joey guru.

Signs of rejection include, but are not limited to:

* Joey found left alone in nest by both parents for more than 10-15 minutes at a time
* Joey crying a lot with neither parent responding to the joey's cries
* Joey trying to crawl out of the nesting area (before 4-5 weeks out of pouch)
* Joey found alone and cold outside of the nesting area
* Joey found alone in a different nesting area from where parents are located
* Joey found on cage bottom
* Joey found dehydrated
* Joey found with bite and/or scratch marks anywhere on body or face
* Mother repeatedly pushing the joey away when attempting to nurse
* Joey being repeatedly hissed and/or crabbed at by the mother when trying to nurse

Please refer to Suz's site immediately, as it does sound like your baby may be being rejected hug2

Any flavor will do.
How many pouches do you have in their cage? If you have more than one, take all of them out except for one. This will keep mom from leaving her little one or visa versa sometimes.
You can lower the pouch in the cage as well.

we only have one pouch in the cage. The female glider had two babies and on sunday night the other baby glider was doing the same thing. Hanging on the outside of the pouch. when i woke up the next day I found it on the bottom of the cage dead. :-( but the other one was nursing and doing fine but tonight it started to do the same as ther other one did the other night. Just want to do as much as i can for the little guy.

I strongly suggest that you follow BeckiT's advice and go to Suz site and read up on taking care of a rejected joey just in case.
Sending lots of prayers your way. hug2

Thanks for all you help. But he just pasted. He took some pedi lite from my finger tip and I had him wrapped in a towel to keep him warm and I set him down to go get a rubbermade container to mak him a bed like her web site said, and when I came back 2 min later he was not moving and was not breathing. I just don't understand what happened. He was nursing yesterday and was on her back when she was out of the pouch yesterday. But tonight he would not stay in the sleeping pouch and they were running around the cage like every other day. Hope we did not do anything wrong being our first set of babies.

cry I am so sorry! hug2 Sometimes we just don't understand what happens. Please, do not blame yourself or feel that you did anything wrong. Nature is and always will me a mystery to us. All we can do is the best that we can and know in our hearts we try.
Many hugs being sent to you and to your babies. Make sure that mommy gets extra love and attention over the next week or so, she will be grieving in her own way too.

Moving this to Rainbow Memorials - Godspeed sweet little one. gangel

I am sorry your baby didn't make it. It is so hard to lose them when you have waited for them to come out of pouch.

Condolences

I am so sorry about the loss of the two wee ones.

Tiny babies that crawl to the top of the sleeping pouch do so as they are looking for another food source. This is usually caused by a mother not having a sufficent milk supply and she pushes the baby away from nursing on her continusly.

My suggestion for next time around... be prepared to at least supplement the babies every four to six hours with mom feeding them as well. Usually this will only have to be done for a week or two as the mother's milk supply then should be able to catch up with demands of the little ones.

Things to have on hand: French Cather size #5, 1 ml syringe, Wombroo Milk Supplement or Espilac Puppy Milk. If babies are dehydrated they will need to sub-q ed with Normal Saline with D5W. A vet (if asked) will usually teach a client how to do so as babies usually need to be rehyrated several times a day for a few days. You can learn how to do so with one of your adult gliders so when the time comes... you will be able to do so with a baby.

If not wanting to supplement joeys along... then it would be best then to probly reconsider having the male altered.

I wish you better luck with the next set of little ones. hug2
