My understanding is that the test can be negative and the gliders can be treated. But it won't do any good unless it is an active infection.

My two youngest gliders, Zeus (5 mos) and Athena (6 mos), went with me to the recent Ohio gathering. I took them to my vet this afternoon for fecals (freshly delivered right into the specimen cups - gotta' love 'em!) and just got a phone call that both samples tested *negative* for parasites. ANYONE who got fecals done on your gliders...
Positive OR Negative
Please fax over ANY and ALL reports of THAT WHOLE visit to:
I do not have access to a fax, and do not have a hard copy of a vet report, but will PM my info. to Peggy, just in case it may be helpful. I did have some contact with the little RR'ed leu joey - I gave him a mealie in Ohio and he made a pit-stop in my home on his way south. I have many different species of animals in my home and am a stickler for hand-washing ... that may have helped prevent an infection here.

All my cages tested negative, also.
I tested the ones that were at the SGGA; Emi, from Alicia; and my glider from Tanya. I had my results faxed to Peggy. I'm done with all this now, so if there's something more I should do or didn't do right, please PM me.

All tests came back negative! But the vet said it could take up to 6 weeks for any eggs to show up, so I'm not taking any chances and am going to treat everyone anyway. I'm also going to treat them for giardia even though that tested negative too. (I helped railroad the rescues that have it.) He said it won't hurt them, so better to be safe than sorry. I have a joey going to his new home in 3 weeks and I don't want anyone sick!

As with any parasite, a false negative is very likely. Brittney, there is probably no way to track where your giardia came from. It could have come from Karens, someone at the Ohio gathering, anyone who handled the gliders before or after they came to you, any used item that they may have had contact with before or after coming to you, the school you attend, a pet store, any item you bought lately for your gliders, etc, etc.... It is very difficult to track giardia. The important thing is that you are treating your babies now. so just checking, but is it possiable to transfer illnesses like trick, giardia, est. just by someone who has a glider that has it and then pets/handles your glider? or can things like this pre-exist and come back positive due to stress or other factors? what else could give an otherwise heathly glider these illnesses save for the obivious (dirty cage/pouch or bad diet)?

What are some symptoms of giardia? Is it necessary to test if gliders seem healthy as always. Neither of my fuzzbutts have come in contact with any other gliders or animals. I do alternate taking them to work with me each day. Monday & Weds I take Bandit. Tues & Thurs I take Mojo. Friday I take both of them. Other than work we dont get out much.

Keep in mind, giardia can come from a water source...food not washed well...not just animal to animal contact.

I’m in the process of taking all my glider for fecals. I work for a vet so there is no report. I fix the fecal. I check then a doc checks after me. So far Pepper has had 2 neg fecals and keoni has had one. He is getting a second soon. They were both at the Ohio gathering with me. I am also getting all the others done. So far Hades and Persephone have had neg fecals. Tomorrow I will be taking in samples for Carmella and Ares and Gizmo and Hunni. The that leave my trio who will go next. I will keep posting as I take them in. Angel im so happy they all had neg fecals!

so just checking, but is it possiable to transfer illnesses like trick, giardia, est. just by someone who has a glider that has it and then pets/handles your glider? or can things like this pre-exist and come back positive due to stress or other factors? what else could give an otherwise heathly glider these illnesses save for the obivious (dirty cage/pouch or bad diet)? Most of these parasites are transmitted through poop to mouth contact and I believe all must stay moist to survive. If someone handles a glider and is pooped on and turns around and immediately handles another glider who licks them, then it is technically possible to transmit something. This holds true for clothing as well (if something stays on the clothing and is transferred to the second glider who then grooms it off). The most obvious concern is with gliders having diarrhea, as that is a wet contact easily passed on to another person/glider/etc. What are some symptoms of giardia? Is it necessary to test if gliders seem healthy as always. As Karin said, Giardia does not just come from unclean conditions, it is around us ALL of the time. It is in the water supply, it is on fruits and vegetables. Most kids come in contact with it on a regular basis (pretty much every time you get in a swimming pool, you've just been exposed). The difference is, most people and animals can fight off the infection, or have a bought of diarrhea and never realize they've even had Giardia. It is when the immune system is compromised or depressed (because of recent illness, stress, etc.) that Giardia can take hold and make a person or animal sick. Symptoms can include (but you will not necessarily see); loss of appetite weight loss dehydration diarrhea lethargy yellow/orange stool very bad smelling stool pain (potentially leading to SM) Just because they are not showing symptoms, does not mean that they are not carrying the parasite. Gliders are fantastically adept at hiding illness and particularly with a parasite like Giardia, sometimes they will never get most of the symptoms associated with it. If you think there may be a chance of exposure, they need to be tested.
