so I got one of my girls out just barely and she seems very very bloated. She's not a chubby girl but I have never seen her stomach this big. Should I just watch her or get her to the vet? I don't even know if gliders can get bloated.

she is in a cage with her sister so I know she doesn't have any babies in there. The only way she could is there is an unaltered male in the cage next to her but I am almost positive that there are no babies in there. It most definitely looks like bloating

She needs to be seen by a vet ASAP!!! Bloating is NOT normal in a glider at anytime. This can be serious and sometimes fatal if not taken care of right away.

Bloating is not normal and is of concern, I would get her into the vet ASAP to see what's going on. Have you seen her going potty today, does she seem to be struggling with it? How is she acting otherwise? It could be a blockage, or fluid build up or something else, but I do think a vet should get involved as soon as you can get her in. I hope she's ok, let us know how she's doing. hug2

Is the glider drinking unusually large amounts of water in a 24 hour period that is causing sudden weight gain?

I had a glider several years ago who did the above. Ultra Sound results showed the bile ducts were blocked going to the Liver. Saddly, the glider had to be put to sleep to prevent unnecessary pain and suffering.

She still needs to be seen by a vet..she could have a partial blockage!

What diet is she on? What did she eat last night?

Yes, this is very urgent. There are many, many things that can cause this, none of them are pregnancy. You should watch her very closely tonight, and if you cannot get her to the emergency vet tonight, regular vet as soon as they open in the morning. She MUST see a vet as soon as possible.

She's on the Precillas diet. Last night she had the mix of it, if you don't know what's in it let me know and i'll tell you, but she had the mix, peas and carrots and pineapple. She's eaten all of these hundreds of times before and i've never had any problems. Her sister (who is also her cage mate) seems a little bloated too but not as bad. I don't feed my gliders anything that I haven't asked about. I don't know what could be causing it. I just hope their both okay.

They normally get gatorade in their water bottles but when I don't have gatorade they get water, well I ran out and had to use just water which they don't drink as much of, and as soon as I got more gatorade they got that and it was gone that night, so I put more in and they drank half that bottle. So they both have drank a lot of gatorade in the past 36 to 48 hours. I've never had to deal with this in any animal...I keep checking on them and they're still sleeping but when I check on them they crab at me for waking them up and their ears are perked up and their bright eyed so I hope they will be okay through the night because I can't get them to a vet tonight.

They shouldn't get so much gatorade. They need plain water to drink. I don't know what the effects are of drinking just gatorade but I'd think that could be the cause of their problem. Make sure you tell the vet. Good luck and keep us posted.

i'll take the gatorade out tonight and try giving them water. I just have a hard time with the water because they seem to drink the bare minimum, but i'll try taking the gatorade out tonight and see if the bloating get better. Thank you all for your help!

I would take her to the vet asap. I wouldn't wait it out till tomorrow, thats too much of a risk. There has to be an emergency vet around you somewhere who can do ultrasounds and such to check for blockages.

I noticed earlier that you mentioned your other glider was also somewhat bloated.
Have they had 'apple juice' that might have gone bad?
What types of veggies are you feeding?
If you have given them beans (lima), cauliflower, or broccoli, these can cause 'gas'.

Doesn't Gatorade have a ton of SALT?

Personally, I've never used it, our gliders get water only (spring water bottled) and get nectar a couple of times a week with their regular diet.

Gliders must have water at ALL times in their cage. They don't drink much but will dehydrate fast without it. It should be changed daily or every other day and always check for a leaky bottle.

They might be drinking tons of the Gatorade because it's making them more thirsty.

One other question..is pineapple on the PP diet? I don't remember it but pineapple is very acidic and shouldn't be fed often at all.

I actually had a vet recommend gatorade, but I didn't trust it because it has tons of salt and chemicals. I just stuck with pedialyte and gliderade when Cessna got dehydrated.

Gatorade or Pedialyte should ONLY be given in a dehydration situation, or if dehydration suspected, for short duration (a day or two), and mixed 50/50 with water.

Pinapple should be rare and in very small amounts.

Of the two, if they have way too much salts, it could contribute, but since I've not known a glider who had only gatorade to drink before, I don't know what it could do.

vet ASAP.

I see your location as Utah-I'm hoping around the SLC area.

There IS a nighttime ER vet, open 7pm to 7am, who can see gliders in SLC. I've taken my own there. Dr.'s Emch or Matheson both know gliders, or can be called in an emergency by the hospital. Here's the info:

Here are the ingredients in Gatorade. Note, artificial colors and flavors are what makes them "different".

Gatorade
Ingredients:

water, sucrose syrup, glucose-fructose syrup, citric acid, natural and artificial flavors, salt, sodium citrate, monopotassium phosphate, ester gum, sucrose acetate isobutyrate, red 40, blue 1

Nutrition Facts:

serving size: 8 fl oz; calories 50; total fat 0g; sodium 110mg; potassium 30mg; total carbs 14g; sugars 15g

I would stop giving them Gatorade at all. It's full of sugar, salt, citric acid, artificial ingredients and dyes.
NOTE that the SERVING SIZE listed is 8 fl oz for a HUMAN...which is also the size of the most commonly used water bottles we use for our gliders.

Hope this helps!

As an extra note on the gliderade/water, they don't need to drink very much water on Priscilla's diet because it is a wet diet so they get most of their fluid intake from the food they are eating (just like with BML and HPW as well). I can see where the gatorade may be causing a problem but as everyone has said, now that there is a problem, they need to be seen, because there is no way to know if just removing the gatorade will help. Even if it seems to help initially (on the surface) there could be other underlying problems that you may not be aware of, until it is too late, without vet intervention.

Please let us know as soon as you know something. hug2

I used to work primarily with wildlife, and gatorade was the emergency backup for hydration. When there was no pedialyte or good electrolyte solution, that was what we use. The electrolytes are good when an animal is dehydrated, but with a healthy animal...it could cause hypertonic problems. Because the electrolytes are much stronger than normally necessary. Not to mention addatives that really aren't necessary.

And it would help if you can tell what kind of bloating it is. Does it feel like fluid or does it feel like air? If its air in the intestines.

Post what happens with the vet.

Some of my gliders get little 'bloated' bellies right after I feed them. If they eat a lot of food in a short period of time, you can see the food make their belly swell... It's much more obvious on thin gliders.

I don't understand why you are offering gatorade instead of water? All living creatures need plain water to drink (how would you do if you had no water to drink?). The gatorade is like candy to them that's why they are drinking so much. Please do not put this in their bottles. If they are thirsty, they will drink their water. My two drink maybe 1oz. of water a week - that is all they need. they get the rest from their food. I hope your babies are doing better today.

I did take the gatorade out and the bloating went down over night. They went to see my favorite vet that i worked with when i was doing my internship. he did an ultrasound to look for blockage but there was none. we also did fecal floats and smears and everything came back fine. They were very active last night and did not like the vet today. It looked like they were bloated because of all the extra liquids but they passed it on their own. I trust this vet a lot or I probably wouldn't have settled for just that. He is in my opinion the best vet in the valley that i live in. And he has seen gliders before. He actually took care of my rescues before I got them and nursed them back from the dead basically. I trust him a lot.
The reason I give them gatorade is because when we first got them they lived with my boyfriend who gave them gatorade everynight, which is not what they were used to when we first got them. after they came to live with me I tried just water and they didn't seem to drink as much of it and i was afraid of dehydration so I stuck to the gatorade. I did not know that they won't drink much water if they are on the precilla's diet. that is very good to know and very helpful. All of my gliders have gained a lot of weight and I think it's from the gatorade since in has all the extra sugar. so just water for them from now on. And the pineapple, that's good to know to. I was told that it was okay to give to them, but I was not told that it was only okay every once and a while.
Thank you all for your help and concerns. I love this site and the help I get from it. You guys are all awesome and amazing.
