So after hearing so many comments about how much some peoples gliders love their pinkies I want to let my babies try it but have a few questions.

1-How many pinkies per glider-does each glider get their own or is that too much? Why? Mostly I have a few pairs, 2 trios, 1 quad and 1 group of 5

2-If they love it and we're hooked how often is it okay to give them a pinkie treat w/out completely throwing their diet balance out of whack?

3-Is there any reason I shouldn't offer a pinkie treat to newly acquired foster/rescues?

4-How much do pinkies cost so I'm not in shock when I hear the price?

5-Is there another place to get these besides a pet store and how would I go about finding that place? There are no local pet stores that I like to give my business to unless its an absolute have to case.

Thanks in advance everyone for sharing your wonderful knowledge w/us!

My babies love pinkies! (I actually use fuzzies - a little bit bigger and they have more calcium due to more developed bones!

I usually fed 1 1/2 fuzzies per 2 gliders. They don't leave much left over then - so for a trio, 2 fuzzies. I do not cut them in half though, so the group of 2 would get two small ones.

I wouldn't feed them more than once a month - though some people do feed once a week. For my guys it is a special treat (or opps, I'm out of food treat!)

Nope - probably be good for them!

I buy the "Artic Mice" that are specially raised for feeding and they are a little over a dollar per fuzzy/pinkie. If you don't like the pet stores, try a herp society for sources - most people who have snakes end up raising their own food due to costs.

Has anyone's gliders ever refuse a pinkie? I put 2 pinkies in a bowl in their cage and they threw it on the floor.

Pinkies are newborn mice or rats - usually just a day or two old. Fuzzies are a little older - about a week. I use fuzzies because the bones have started to calcify a bit, so it is better for them.

I've only had one time they didn't eat them. Not sure why. dunno Maybe they are like mealies and some just don't know how - but I ain't squeezing them!

I feed my gliders pinkies/pups(baby rats).

I do have a couple of cages that arent real fond of them and generally never finish the whole thing. But other than that, the rest of my cages love them.

I generally never feed mine fuzzies. Mostly because once they start getting fur they are too cute and I cant do it.

I usually feed 1 pinkie per glider for the pairs, 2 pinkies for the trio's, 3 for the quads and 4 to my 5pk. It just depends on your gliders.

One of my pairs will eat one a piece. The other pair will share one. One of my trio's would also eat one a piece while my other trio will only share the 2 pinkies. See where I'm trying to go with this? It just depends on what you know they'll eat.

I breed my own so I dont know how much they cost to buy. Sorry.

I feed mine either once a week, every other week or once a month. Depending on how many babies I have.

When I feed pinkies to my gliders, they dont get their BML that night.

My gliders love them and I love how happy they are when its pinkie night.

I am a wuss.. I cant even watch a snake eat its mouse/rat. it is heartbreaking. Is that why there are some chunky gliders? I have seen alot of fat gliders.. (Not ment in a bad way.)

I do have a few "fluffy" gliders but I wouldnt say that they are obese. So no I dont think that pinkies have anything to do with overweight gliders.

Gliders eat pinkies in the wild, they are a great source for protien and calcium.

Not to mention, mine go ape for them! If they are happy, then I'm happy.

But definately not for everyone to do.

The amount of pinkies they eat doesn't make them fat! It's their overall diet vs. exercise just like people!

Actually - pinkies don't have much calcium unless they have full bellies! (Their bones are still soft and cartlige, not calcified. That's why I use fuzzies!)

Ah. Thank you for clarifying that up. Mine usually have full bellies when I feed mine.

I feed Doyle and Malachai one pinkie each once and they LOVED it. i could have done without the sounds but that aside i have never seen them happier. not to mention they both seemed to have SOOO much energy after! i have yet to find a pet store here in TN that has them so i can give them to Thor and Sophie. But if i give them to those two with the twins being 3 weeks OOP they wont mistaken a pinkie for their baby will they???[quote=Mel2mdl]The amount of pinkies they eat doesn't make them fat! I've owned pet rats and pet mice and I couldn't imagine harming one. They are just too smart. And do gliders eat baby rodents in the wild? Gliders are tree dwelling, rodents are not. baby birds - yes.

You can buy frozen pinkies and fuzzies on-line and have them shipped to your door - just be prepared to have a pack of pinkies in the freezer - and watch out for freezer burn! Some dealers pack them in individual vacuum-sealed packs - ask the dealer how they're packed. There are reptile expos where a dealer might have an entire chest freezer with frozen "feeder" animals at an expo, and you might be able to just buy one or two to take home to try for the first time. Take a few freezer packs and a small cooler if you go to a reptile show for pinkies. They can cost 50 cents to $1, depending on the dealer and how you're getting them.

Check out the classifieds section of a Reptiles Magazine next time you're in a pet store, and there are a lot of dealers to choose from! Mice on Ice might be one of them, if you want to do a word search on-line. There are also dealers at kingsnake.com

Pet stores often sell frozen pinkies, too, but the quality can be lacking in a pet store.

C.
