I've heard some people uses steam cleaners for their cages. I would like more information on how well they work?

I've been thinking about getting one to clean my cages with but wasnt sure. And would hate to buy something that wouldnt work real well.

I dont use glider kitchens and their cages can be a real pain in the behind to clean at times. I have a few cages of real messy eaters.

Sherri, I know that khyricat/Amie used to use a steam cleaner on her cages - I don't know if she still does or not. I believe that Karen/sugeebaby also uses or did use one... you may want to check with her.

I've used a Little Green Machine to clean my cage. It loosens the gunk and you can easily wipe it down. Also works pretty well on the walls behind the cage! I, too, have recently added a glider kitchen to corral the mess. Walls and cage are MUCH cleaner!

Even if you don't use it to clean cages, steam cleaners come in real handy to spot clean upholstery in the car, furniture, tile in the bathroom, and the occasional spot on the carpet. I really like the small, portable one and get more use out of it than I would the larger one.

My only concern with using a steam cleaner on the cages would be the 'high temperature' of the steam. I.m not sure what the heat tolerance of the PVC coating would be and if it would cause damage to it.
I know there are some steam cleaners with adjustable heat settings. So you might want to consider this before using one or buying one just for cages.

Yeah adjustable heat settings would be good to look into.

A guy at traders village who buys and sells cages said the 'high pressure' cleaners scour the powder coatings off, but that otherwise the same cage-types last a long time.

OMG! I just recently got the Wagner Steamer 905, which is sold as a "wall paper remover"... it is 1500 watts of steam, is cool to the touch IMMEDIATELY after you spray it, and does an AMAZING job on cages! I found out about it from another board member.
I had a friend bring their new joey cage over that used to be used on birds. She couldn't get it clean enough no MATTER WHAT she did. She hasn't stopped ohhhhing and ahhhhing since. It's "soft" to the touch when your done. You can touch your cage again, without sticking to it! LOL

I have it because my cage is enormous, and I can't take it outside.

It costs 99 dollars at Lowes, but WELL WORTH IT! It does incredible for toys! And I have a tunnel attached to my cage that is a pain, but now I just blow the smoke through it! It's clean!

AND, it works great on all sorts of stuff in your house! The floors, (yes it has that attachment, even for the carpet!), around the nasty toilet, in the shower/tub, around the kitchen sink, I even steamed the faces to all my kitchen cabinets, and all around my baseboards! I'm a steaming fool now!

Can you tell I like it?? Hope this helps.

I also use the Wagner steamer and LOVE it. I use it on all the cages as well as counter tops, bathrooms, floors, toys, etc. It is amazingly easy to use, portable and does a wonderful job. I clean each cage once every other week with the steam cleaner and have noticed no issues with the cage chipping or anything.

i wanted to do the same, so, i had my husband go out to our garage & get the steamer out. it has been in there for 15+yrs, i totally forgot about it. so, anyway, i get it all set up, go to use it, & it doesn't work!!!
i was so upset, so disappointed.
the other day, when i was cleaning the cage, it really took ALOT of elbow grease on my part to get the food off the cage, so, i thought about the steamer. he really doesn't know why it won't work. he thinks maybe the heat element went bad, sitting in the garage year after year.
i am going to see if it can be fixed.
i think that would be the ultimate way to go @ cleaning the cages.

Ok, now you guys got my intrigue up about the Wagner 905!

Thanks Sari and Val! I think a trip to Lowes is in my agenda tomorrow for a better look.

Quick question:

If the steam cleaner cleans the cage, where does the mess go? Does it just evaporate? Or just leaves the mess on the floor. Thanks.

I always use a hand towel while I steam. If I'm doing the bars (I have a shelf cage) then I put the towel on one side, and steam on the other. In the more dirty and "caked on" cases, it just moves along the surface, and I wipe afterwards to keep it clean. It doesn't make much water mess at all! As I said, I use it indoors on my cage.

Hope that helps Nicole smile

NOT ridiculous. I haven't tried yet (but will be doing that tonight!) and I'll give you the low down. But I'm thinking it will be perfect! It has all kinds of attachments too, so you can find the right way to clean anything!

Well, I just did the whole kid's bathroom, and the squeegy for the mirror and windows is AWESOME! I couldn't believe it, I wasn't even going to try, except that I couldn't find the windex! And I did it without ANY chemicals! I even squeegied (sp?) the walls around the toilet (he's a boy, only 6!) and it did a great job.

Still have to do the cages, but more house cleaning to do for the SSS!! smile

Not to mention rust...I used it and noticed rust dripping through the hollow frames leaking into the tray. Seemed to spawn from where the screws are. I have the sturdy cages from suncoast...I guess your not supposed to saturate them. Now I just sponge clean with a not too moist sponge with Clorox Anywhere spay. Just making sure to not have it dripping saturated.

Davie, what I've noticed is that if I clean something that "already has rust on it" then it takes the rust off as much as it can, to make it safer. But that's just my opinion smile I noticed this on the screws that attach the toilet top! LOL

Oh, and the Wagner does not get very wet at all.

Ah...I don't know what my husband bought but it's definately not a Wagner and it's about 3 years old...it gets very drippy if I don't keep it moving. Hmmm perhaps I will google this wagner and bring it up to hubby as a shiny new mantoy!

It was SO easy! As a matter of fact, we've got 4 rescues in there right now! They came in a little 12" by 12" by 4" high "travel cage" with no pouch, and were living in there! Ughh! But anyway, it was a cinch!!!!!

By the way, your mr. munchie men were a BIG hit!! THANK YOU thanks

How big and heavy is the Wagner? I have carpal tunnel and can't lift anything very heavy. I've been using Green Works then wiping with clean water on my cages. I also just started using puppy pads instead of fleece in the liner trays. What a difference! The smell is GONE!!!! i can very easily check everyone's poo each morning, instead of struggling to see it on the fleece. It's been three days now and they still don't need to be changed! I'm definitely going to use these from now on instead of fleece! No more smell, no more shaking fleece and still having to use my fingers and a lot less laundry. The gliders didn't even try to mess with them either. I figured they'd pull them up thru the cage bottom and shred them but not one has been touched. Thanks, tammyangel, for a great tip!

I'm not sure how much it weighs, but it's on wheels!! and has a 10 foot hose! I call it my little yellow volkswagon. When I have time, I'll post pic. And I use "the neat sheet" under my cage, same kind of wonderful things to say, and I wash it maybe once a week or so? I can see everything, check everything, it doesn't smell until it's REALLY used, and well, you get the idea...

Which attachment do you use to get the cage cleaned the best and fastest? About how long does it take you to clean the suncoast style cage?
This sounds great!! May have to get one, I'm looking at them on ther internet right now!!!!
Thanks!!

Oh, one more thing, does it take long to set it up for use? And what kind of cleaning product do you use in it?

I don't think you use any water, because it's a steam cleaner. The water gets so hot, it's steam cleans the cage. That's why I'm sure everyone loves it. It cleans the cage without any chemicals.
