Thanks for the tip. The doctor was reluctant to prescribe anything for pain on Saturday, and said he didn't like giving Metacam to small animals because it was so easy to mess with the dosage and hurt the animal.

The plan is only to use it till the results come back tomorrow or Wednesday, and to use it very sparingly until then. When the results come back, we will know which meds to switch to and that should help ease the pain by fixing the underlying problem. The doctor is having her take a very small dose of the Metacam, to take it no more than twice a day, and to use it only as needed. My plan is to give it to her a little before she wakes up at night, and to avoid the morning dose if possible. That way I can keep tabs on her pain levels without her suffering too much. Once we know what drug will be prescribed, we will change the pain meds (if they are still needed).

I have to say, this is such a good example of why it's better to get the culture and sensitivity as early as possible. We had checked for infection by looking for white blood cells under the scope but obviously everything would have been easier if we had gone ahead with the C&S right from the start.

The culture and sensitivity test came back and it was normal... for dogs. But it was not normal for gliders or any other marsupial. Sugar has a staph infection (non-hemolytic staphylococcus), and this bacteria is found in many placental mammals "but is not a part of the normal marsupial intestinal flora", according to my vet. The proper medication for this type of staph infection is the trimethoprim sulfa that she is on now. The vet recommended pumpkin use be a regular addition to her diet, to make things easier for her in the pooping department.

I think Sugar is getting better. She hisses less when she pees and the straining during pooping is not as bad (back to hissing, but not as much and no crabbing at all). We will try today without the small amount of pain meds she was getting and see if that is doable. The fuzz is still on her tail and cloacal areas, so that is a good sign. The wound still looks nasty, but it is not getting any worse, which is good.

Tonight Sugar and Spice will have a supervised play date. I hope it goes well.

Thanks again to everyone for their help and comments! I'll keep you updated.

I am happy to report that the hissing during urination is gone! There is an occasional hiss during pooping but she doesn't seem to be straining as hard. We've got another week on the meds, and hopefully everything will resolve itself.

I've decided to keep the two separated until Sugar's shoulder is fully healed. I don't like doing it, but I don't want to risk any further injuries. I let them play together supervised, and I've been swapping pouches every other day. I hate that they have to be apart, but it's better than Sugar getting hurt again.

Awww....I'm so happy she is doing better. I'm wondering if her cagemate was overgrooming her because she knew she was sick. Hopefully, it will all resolve and they can be together again,
