If you don't have these things, a temporary one can be made out of a small plastic butter tub lid, cut it down to size, cut a hole in the middle of it to fit around the glider's neck, and cut from the hole to the edge of the lid. Cover the raw edge of the lid with bandaids and fit ot over the glider's head, use more bandaids to secure it where you made the cut to the edge. If there is anyone there with you that can do this for you, then you can keep the baby wrapped in fleece burrito style to keep her away from her belly.
Your glider is self mutilating and if you do not act quickly, she WILL kill herself.
Take a peice of fleece and wrap that joey up like she is a burrito. Roll her up where she can NOT get to her belly. HOLD her this way until we can get some help. You may have to hold her like this all night until you can get to the vet in the morning.
PLEASE PLEASE call Bourbon at 321 331 1608 She is the best help you can get with a self mutilator.

I just got off the phone with her, she is going to try to work on something to keep her teeth from her chest.. which is what she has scraped. We also discussed, changing the joey from the formula to a standard diet, but only the sappy part, she has a few options. the rest of her gliders is on the pp diet, and she also has some wombaroo HP to work with. I also suggested she give her some yogurt tonight, to help with her digestions some. The good thing is she is urinating and defecating fine, she is not dehydrated. at this time she has her wrapped up burrito style, but is going to work on somethings to make it more comfortable for her. I also suggested she put some neosporin on the scraped area, to help her there.
With the joey being so young, I would hate to put a collar on her,if it can be helped at all. But Robin great advice, that is the first thing they should do as a general rule.
She knows she can call me if she has ANY problems tonight.
Wow this is going to be a long night! LOL just wanted to update, she is eating some yogurt right now and i made her a shirt typeof thing and its acually working shes keepin it on and seems to be leavin her bad area alone! i got a pic of her belly, i just dont kknow how to insert it???
but i guess we will see how she is in the morning.
i just wanted to thank everyone for their help!! i have never had anything like this happen!!!! but thank yall sooooooooo much!

After you hit reply, go to the bottom of the page on the lower left you will see File Manager. Click on that, a box will appear, just follow the directions. You will not see the picture until after you hit reply.
I'm happy to hear that your little one is doing better. I hope that things will heal up for her quickly. Your doing a great job, and you are in good hands with Bourbon.

Bourbon said it looks like ring worm, or a fungus! and I think I have to agree!!!! I looked at it again and it does look like ring worm! So tonight I am just keeping her from messing with it, and taking her to the vet tomorrow! to figure it out.

Amanda, I'm sorry I missed your call - I've been fighting a migraine for 3 days now Anyway, you've gotten great advice from Bourbon. I tried to call you this morning and left a message. I did speak to Bourbon and she filled me in on what's happening. By the way, because the Joey Formula is made with Brisky's Booster Milk - it is fine to continue with it OR you can change to the nectar for the PP diet; either is fine. Bourbon thought you were referring to the pellets when you said Brisky's... Personally, I would stick with the Joey Formula for now. As for the area on her chest, I agree with Bourbon - it appears to be either ringworm or a fungus of some sort. In the incubator, what is the humidity level? Do the sides of the incubator bead with water at all? If so, the humidity level is too high and that may be the culprit for the fungus being able to develop. Please ask your vet about this in the morning when you get her in. Please keep us updated. I will be at work today, but leave a message if you don't get through to me and I'll call you on my way home from work. I will also check in to the board here during my breaks throughout the day
hope you had a good night with your baby.. we are all praying for you!

I didn't even know suggies got ring worm. I remember reading on here about another glider that had a round chew mark the other day and thinking it looked like ringworm. Wow... I have CATS! I need to give everyone a once over every week to head off any infestations. Luckily my cats do not go outside, so the risk is very low!
Suz, Teresa told me last night you don't usually take calls after 9 your time. Sorry bout that. I panicked and sent her your way without even THINKING about Bourbon. I just thought joey - SUZ! LOL
Glad you got some help last night! And I hope all goes well at the vet. Keeping my fingers crossed for you and your little one!

well last night I made a vest type of thing to keep her from biting on the area, and I got it tight enough she stayed in it all night and it worked really well!
This morning I got Hope in to see the vet, He said it is a staff infection! so I got an antibiotic that has an inflamation ingredient with it so it should make her quit itching! and he gave me a shampoo to bath her in to help it also!
So I really hope this works! I will keep yall posted on how well it heals! thanks for everything!

The vest is an AWESOME idea! You're a great glider mom! I'm so glad you took her to the vet since this obviously was something only a vet could diagnose and treat! I love her name, BTW! LOL! (See my signature)
So glad she is doing better! great idea on the vest!!! wish I could figure out to do that for neuter surgery instead of an e-collar. would be more comfy for them. any ideas?
jillmarie, this little girl is only 6 weeks oop, so she does't have the mass fight in her that an adult would. she was able to get it off multiple times, and getting it just right was more difficult than it looks. we are/have been working on finding something similar to this that would work for neuters or cloacal sm's. but so far to no avail..
She is doing better today! Her Belly looks sooo much better its not all red it looks to be healing! and the vest is perfect it keeps her from getting at her belly! I made her a pink one today! shes soo cute! But she is still trying to bite at it when I took off the vest! So I really hope it heals fast, and she doesnt need to wear it for much longer!

Here are some pics I took tonight of Hope, she is weighing 33 grams, shes very thin! but her belly is scabbed over it seems to be healing! she is still trying to bite at it with out the vest so I guess she will be wearin it until it is completly healed!
But she is soo sweet and friendly, it makes me feel sooo bad for her even though she seems so sick, she is still licking and play biting on me! and she is soo cuddly!!!! I cant wait till she is all healed!
I also attached a pic of the vest before I put it on her, so yall can see how its made if anyone ever needs to make one for their babies! it looks like an H and you just tye the straps around the neck and in front of the back legs! It works sooooo well!

Amanda, She doesn't look too thin for her body. I think she just looks scrawny to you because her fur is so matted from the ointment you have to put on her belly. 33 grams IS tiny for a 7 week oop joey, but since she is being hand-raised, that is not unusual. You should weigh her daily to make sure she continues to gain and doesn't lose at all though. You're really doing a great job with her
Bless her little heart Amanda. She sure is so darn sweet looking! It looks like your doing a wonderful job with her, and because of that is why she is just so darn sweet! Give her lots of gentle kisses!

that was such a great idea for that vest. I will have to make up some like that of different sizes to put in my emergancy kit. Hope your baby feels better soon.

Debra, Because she is a joey and is still not fully active, a vest like that will work for her. However, they don't work on adult gliders because they figure out how to get out of them too easily. A number of us have been working on coming up with a version that will work for adults, but the closest anyone has come yet is Mary/pappy1264 when she needed something for Timmy...
oh oh oh I just thought of something. If you make a vest with snaps (or velcro) and put it on backwards wouldn't that work? Or.. make like suspenders with "shoulder straps" that criss cross for the backlegs and tail area... Later this afternoon I will try to come up with a template to show what I mean.

hey, maybe you could do somthing with snaps, but velcro wouldnt work its not strong enough, but the thing is the fleece stretches so you have to tighten it as it does! or she will take it off, so im not sure snaps would work either. maybe?
But i am hoping today I wont need it anymore! I gave her a bath and i am letting her dry and I am going to watch her and see what she does! she has tryed to lick at it a couple times so Im not sure!

Update: I just spoke with Amanda a few minutes ago, and she is doing much better. Considering the amount of stress and worry that she's been under with this sweet little baby, she just felt overwhelmed in the moment. She loves this little baby and just wants to do whatever she can to help her. She is going to keep Hope, and will be working with a few of us over the phone until this current situation clears. She will be bringing Hope back to the vet in the morning for a follow up exam and pain medications. Sending tons of prayers your way Amanda...Everything is going to be alright.

They sure can! My Lan started SMing his tail 5 days after I got him and before I'd even really found GC - I was beside myself, all I had was the emergency vet here that doesn't know all that much about suggies, they had to look up online how to do his tail amputation! Thank God for GC and the wonderful and amazing people here, the next time Lan SMed after his neuter 5 months after his tail amp, I had GC and felt so much less alone and frightened. You aren't alone, hon!

Ok I have been trying all day to get her in to the vet today they are booked up, but I finally got to just talk to the acual vet that seen her last week, He said that he doesnt feel comfortable to put her on any pain meds, it would be totatlly experiemental, so I just said no. but he said that to not worry about bathing her and keep the vest on her at alll times! because she will get at it sooo fast! and to apply the antibiotic ointment until healed! the wound area isnt bad so he said she will be just fine! just we are starting alll over now that she got the scab off it, so dont take it off untill its completley healed! and the reason she went crazy trying to bite at it yesterday was because she got the scab off and it was hurting her, and bothering her, but once it scabs back up it shouldnt bother her anymore, but still dont take the vest off untill its completely healed or we will be starting over again!

Hope looks terrible! she is bald in some areas, so I guess she is sooo stressed! But the wound is healing its all scabbed over and she hasnt messed with it! she hates it when i put medicine on it but oh well.
But she is eating well, I started giving her some veggies and she loves them! I probably should be weighing her but I havent, she is getting bigger! and she is such a little loving, and cuddly baby! I dont really hold her much becasue she seems to start messing with the vest so when i jsut leave her in the cage she sleeps alot! so I just keep her in her cage and when she sees me she just goes crazy licking me and jumping on me! its cute! I cant wait till shes all healed and I can handle her better! with out the vest bothering her! and shes all greasy from the ointments! But i guess she is doing well!

The fur will grow back. I'm sure the fur lose is from stress and also from not being able to groom herself with the vest on. The wound healing is good news. Keep up what you are doing. You say she is eating veggies now. You can also start her on the staple diet you feed the other gliders. Just watch her and make sure she can eat it good since you do feed Priscilla's diet. Just watch that she can eat the oatmeal that is in it. You could try to get more of the soupy part of the diet than the thicker part. Keep up the good work with this little sweetie. If you need anything you know how to reach me.

I'm in 100% agreement with Tonya: The fur WILL grow back. It may take time...but it'll come back. And the first day that she's free to groom herself, she'll go BONKERS cleaning every square inch! OCD on the hygiene department!

I would talk to your vet to see if there's something else that can be given to her orally. It might not hurt at this point to even consider seeking a second opinion. As far as I'm concerned it's been long enough to where she should have started to get some relief from the 'itchy' feeling.

I'm wondering if keeping the wound closed under the vest would make it itchy? Maybe and ecollar every so often to allow it to breathe would make it heal faster. Anybody have any idea?
I really dont know, I am going to stop putting the ointment on her because it seems to be making the area too moist, and the infection is gone so I dont think theres any need in it,
This morning she has her vest off, I really dont know what to do! She wont leave anything on, but its just around her neck and she isnt messin with the wound so I dont know if I am going to mess with her right now!
I just dont know what to do!
Re: joey chewing on her belly!!!!!! help!!!!!!!!!!
[Re: ]
#736371 02/16/0911:31 AM02/16/0911:31 AM
Since she's too little for a regular ecollar, try using a wide, thick band of fleece, around her neck like a collar, to keep her from getting to her belly. I'm sure someone has pics of that. It would enable air to get to the wound area, keep her from attacking it and it wouldn't be so moist.
I would use Emu oil on her wound area now. I've use it for years on my family members, myself and animals of all kinds, including gliders. The healing properties are amazing and Emu oil is perfectly safe for gliders if they ingest it. I checked before I used it on any of my gliders. My exotic vet (who treats all of the exotic animals at the local zoo) said it was safe & beneficial and everything I read online said the same.
You're doing a wonderful job! You're a great glider mommy!
well I took her to the vet today and he gave her a shot of an antibiotic and pain medicine with anti iflamation stuff, and he gave me some blue liquid to put on her 3 times a day to numb the wound, and he said that should make her stop biting at it becuase it tastes nasty adn it will make the pain and itchy go away, he said to take the vest off of her, adn to not put anything on her, in a couple of days if she is still biting at it he said he could make her a collar or he might could do surgery and cut the dead tissue off and stitch it up.
so i dont know I just put her in her cage and she is sleepin so I am leaving her alone! I hope this medicine works!

This just feels wrong to me! Does he not realize the damage she could do in a matter of seconds if she did bite at it??? It worries me that he says it "should make her stop" and "in a couple of days if she is still biting"! In my opinion, she can't afford to wait a couple of days to see if she "might" stop biting and "might" need a collar or surgery! If she were mine, I would either keep the vest on her or make a fleece ecollar to keep her from "maybe" biting herself.
