Hi to everyone
I don't get a chance to post very often but would love some input on this one. I had a very nice but worried lady call me the other day because she thought her her bb could be in trouble. She had had him for two weeks and had bought him when she was on a trip to Los Vegas. I gave her a couple of suggestions for the diarrhea which was her current problem. I told her to try some pedialyte cut 50/50 with water and anyway the next day we went through her diet a bit and this is where i am wanting some imput. I told her one of the most valuable tools she could have was a digital scale and she got one right away. To my amazement this bb is only 40g and she has had him 2weeks and he was supposed to be 7weeks when she got him. Something doesn't figure here. Upon going through her diet she said the breeder had told her to keep him on Glider grub and apples for the first two weeks. I have spoke to her about just switching him over to the bml diet because I am not familiar with this diet at all and it just doesn't sound right.
Would you really slowly introduce veggies fruit and bml or would you suggest just getting him over onto a better diet. I have had gliders for 10yrs now and have not run into this. After our talk she tried a mealworm and he loved it and a piece of squash and he loved it so just making the switch would be quite easy i think but i am worried about the diarrhea issue if he has never had anything but Glider Grub and apples in his tiny life. Would love some input on this. I am going to see if she can get over here to the forum also to learn as much as possible. She has been doing research and that is when she first got ahold of me when she realized that there was so much info that conflicted with her given info. I also have talked to her about the heat rock that the breeder told her to use but right now i think it may be too stressful to take it away. But i am so happy to hear the rock is not in the cage but wrapped many times and placed under the cage and then he has his nest in the cage so for now anyway till he gets a little wieght on I figured she shouldn't change more then need be. I am hoping to get pics of the little guy sometime today.
Thank you everyone in advance
Barb

Badger was on parrot food and trail mix for humans when we brought him home...for the first 8 mos. of his life. I gave him baby food fruits, honeydew, grapes, chicken...cantaloupe and peas the first night he was here..he ate it all..and has since. (I started him on the BML but it was a no go with him so he's been on ZooKeeper's since) ..I would feed the glider the mealworms, fruits, etc. The breeder he came from doesn't have a clue as to what they are doing. No, that isn't even a diet for a glider (or any animal)..that's just pitiful! Poor baby! Thank goodness your friend has you!

Sadly it sounds like he was pulled from his parents way to early. That is done though so have to move forward.

I would switch him over to the BML right away. It could quite possibly be the apples giving the little one the loose stools. I do strongly urge a vet check to rule out bacteria problems or parasite problems.

With having gliders so long, you already know that dehydration can quickly kill, especially one so small. She needs to push the fluids and get him on a good diet right away (I have never heard anything good about Glider Grub).

Definately a vet visit for this little one though. If he is dehydrated, the vet can give sub-q fluids and address what is going on with him. With him so small, the heat rock (providing he can not get to the rock itself or the cords) is probably a good idea. This way he isn't using as much energy to stay warm.

Also, if he has diarreah..he should see a vet ASAP to be checked out..he may be dehydrated and that could mean SERIOUS trouble within hours for the glider.

Badger can't handle apples at all..apples and apple juice can either stop or start up diarreah..depends on the glider's system (and a human too..lol). The baby food bananas mixed with yogurt is what I gave Badger and 3 Cheerios to stop his runs when he got that. But please, tell her to take him to the vet. Good luck..keep us posted!

Oh ooops , my bad lol. That was one of the first things that i had said was to get a fecal done and to have the vet address any dehydration issues. I specialize in Virginia opossum rescue/rehab and release up here and dehydration is always a huge issue and sub q'ing is often called for because of them being found with their dead mother on the road.
But many of the vets up here are very prone to medicating first and wait for the test results so I also cautioned her to ask lots of questions of the vet too to be sure any meds given are warranted for one so tiny. I had an instance here during the summer two yrs ago where i lost two gliders and when I took them in for necropsies my vet put all my gliders (17 of them at the time) on Baytril and chlorapalm which was a complete nightmare for administering and as it turned out was unnecessary as the gliders that died had died of unrelated past problems. The weird thing was that I never had a joey born for about 8monthes after that. Someone told me it could have been from one of the meds.
Anyway I am just cautious now about medications for my guys and told her to ask lots of questions.
I will be keeping in close touch with her over the next few weeks to see how bb does and with update .
I really appreciate all the info because when she comes here she will have this info too.
Thanks again
Barb

sounds like the same breeder my sister got her gliders from at the Las Vegas Convention about 2 weeks ago. He told her to give them nothing but apples for the first 2 weeks then Cat Chow and 5 raisons a day. I have had a terrible time convincing her to change the diet. I wish there was something that could be done to "Re-educate" these breeders. This one's website says he has bred gliders for 15yrs and is the 3rd oldest breeder in the US, so of course my sister thinks he knows best.

oh wow tbull
how old was your sisters glider when she bought him/her and how are they doing. Was she advised to use a heat rock and the Glider Grub too. I believe it was at a convention or a home show or something like that where this little one came from. Well at least I am not dealing with this lady figuring that this is ok but still it is sad that it goes on.
Good luck to your sister and to you in changing her mind

Yes, it was called Cowboy Christmas, they have it every year. she got 2 and they are about 4 or 5 months old. The breeder did not know for sure. They seem to be doing OK, but I still can not get her to check into other diets. Her boy hurt his tail, she thinks on the plastic file box they sleep in (another breeder recommendation, no pouches) and was chewing on it. I freaked and sent her links to ecollars and SM info, instead they called the breeder and he told them it was not that big of a deal. It probly itches and that is why he is chewing. I got her hubby to build a ecollar for him just to shut me up. I will have to ask about a heat rock, being in Vegas it is already warm so I hope they have not gotten one.

Yup same place. I just spoke to her and there were two guys selling gliders at that convention. She bought her little boy from the other guy that was selling there. She spoke to both the ppl that that had different boothes ( for lack of a better word) there. The guy that your sister must of bought her two from said that he expected to sell as many as 80 gliders at the convention. She did see cat food at that guys area. The guy she bought hers from had about 20 joeys all together that she picked her little one from. Obviously no way of tracking bloodlines when all the joeys are put together like that. Scarey thing is between the two different ppl at that convention, if they each sold 80 gliders there are alot of new owners needing help out there.
Well she is giving her new boy his first bml dinner tonight so i hope it goes well for her. Even being so young this little one sounds like he is really full of attitude lol. Likes to bite but she says it doesn't hurt and she knows to not be pulling away and further scaring him. I think she will do well and the diarrhea seems to be passed now so hopefully he gains some weight.
LOL, she was very dismayed to hear her name of Stitch was not an original lol

You might want to have your friend take her boy to the vet for a check up. The other seller there (not going to call him a breeder ) is the cageworks guy and my sister said his all looked sickly and small and he nueters them himself! That is why she thought she did better getting hers from the other guy. I still told her, if I lived closer I would have slapped her for buying from ANYONE at a trade show . I also got a PM about the cagework's gliders having parasites, poor little furries what a terrible way to start your life.

Thanks everyone for the help and info. Thanks tbull, message has been passed on to her. She is getting him checked and hopefully he will be fortunate enough to of dodged the bullet for parasites. She was asking about neutering with me so I am assuming her boy hadn't been neutered yet. I have run into alot of ignorance(ppl just not knowing better) for these little ones in Canada, but to run into this from so called breeders is something i just could not believe
Again thank you to all
Barb

I am sad to end this story by reporting that this joey passed away yesterday morning. I don't have all the info Ie. vet reports but his poor little system just wasn't up to par. He got as high as 57g but was still having tummy issues. He became severly constipated over night and died before a vet could see him on Saturday
RIP little one
Barb
