Hi all! As you probably know... my newest additions to my glider family, Mowgli and Mausi, are the suggies of my dreams! I intend on breeding them (that is if they're willing ) and was wondering about trios and breeding. I know many breeders have trios and I thought it would be nice to add a grey or WF female to make a trio with Mowgli and Mausi. Here are my thoughts: Mowgli has a stunning pedigree... he is a ringtail, platinum mosaic, 100% het for leu and I think that he would make some gorgeous joeys! Mausi is a leu (the two are as unrelated as unrelated gets) and I would like to have joeys from Mowgli that are not necessarily leu's or leu hets. Also, I have always wanted a trio (breeding or non-breeding)! My concerns: -Joey stealing... how big of a threat is this? -Adding another female- Mowgli and Mausi are roughly 4 1/2 months oop and I would not add another until I return home at which time they will be 8 months oop... will another female be ostracized? -Happiness... will they be happy in a trio? I know gliders love to live in larger groups but will a breeding trio just cause stress? I would love to have some input from some of the breeders with trio experience. Having a trio would also allow me to apply for a USDA license! (something I have always aspired to) Please let me know what you think!

I would like to have joeys from Mowgli that are not necessarily leu's or leu hets. All your joeys will still be 50% leu hets since Mowgli is a 100% leu het -Joey stealing... how big of a threat is this? It's a big threat, especially with unrelated females who weren't raised together. -Adding another female- Mowgli and Mausi are roughly 4 1/2 months oop and I would not add another until I return home at which time they will be 8 months oop... will another female be ostracized? You may have a really hard time getting another glider in with an already bonded pair. I successfully intro'd a 2nd female in with an already bonded pair, and the 3 of them did well together, except the newer female was pulling the joeys of the other girl She's now in a non-breeding trio. -Happiness... will they be happy in a trio? I know gliders love to live in larger groups but will a breeding trio just cause stress? My only successful trio is a pair of sisters and their mate, they've been together since they were 9 & 10 weeks OOP and they are a very close family group, an amazing trio!

Thank you for your advice! I am worried about joey stealing. How do you try to prevent it? Do you have to provide them with more than one pouch? Also, if I were to introduce sooner (before they were 8 months) do you think that would make a difference? I'd love to give it a go, but I want to know the pros and cons first.

Oakley I agree with Becki. I tried a trio. The females were unrelated but had been together from very young. I introduced the male very easily. The 100% leu/het got pregnant. The normal gray mated but never got pregnant. The dominant female was the leu/het (Daffodil)they did raise the first set of joeys together. But I caught Daffodil pinning Daisy (gray, not dominant) and in her pouch. I do believe there was joey stealing. At that point I separated Daisy and found her a mate (Sweet William) they have had several sets of joeys. Infact they just had the triplets.
I was worried about separating established pairs. But all did well. They all have had their own joeys now. I think it must have been stressful on Daisy to have her joeys stolen. Also stressful on Daffodil to always be protecting her joeys and being dominant.
Hope this isn't too confusing. Good luck! Some trios work but usually when the females are related. For example my original WFB pair were half sisters. They had the same Dad but different mom's. They might work in a trio but I have never tried to breed them.

I have a successful breeding trio, the girls are sisters and the male was introduced as a joey (the girls were 4 months older). I have had no problems with them Savannah currently has two boys oop and Georgia is expecting. I love the trios and I'm actually trying to set up another one. HTH.

There really is no way to avoid joey stealing, it either happens or it doesn't. My trio has several pouches unless they have joeys OOP and then they have one huge pouch (it's 12"x18" and then has really deep boxed corners that give them about 3" side to side). I think the key to a successful trio is girls that are sisters/related and grow up together.

From what I understand trios work best if the females are related and have always been together.
I am only trying my first trio now, so I have no personal experience yet, but was strongly advised against pairing unrelated females, especially females of different ages.
If I were you I would just leave them as a pair, and maybe try a trio with sisters in the future. To me, the risk is not worth it.

Thanks for all of your advice! I believe that if I decide to try a trio with these guys I will take intros slowly and be ready to stop at any time. This is the info I was looking for, thanks!

I have been reading this post closely. I have two young females who have been together 6 months (not sisters)and I'm thinking of adding a male who has been living right next to them in a separate cage. They are all within a few months of each other age wise, 2 are 12mos, 1 is 8 mo oop. I have been pouch swapping, and cage swapping for 4 months. They have played together supervised with a little hissing but nothing major. What do you think of this scenario?

Joan, if the boy is fixed you're less likely to have any issues. You may or may not be able to successfully make a breeding trio with them, but since the girls have been raised together and are bonded to one another, you have a better chance than in adding another female later on to an established male/female pair..

Oh I plan on breeding them... the male is 100%LeuHet and the females are Leu and 50%LeuHetchampagne. I just would hate to have joey pulling, etc. The two females seem to just love each other, but when you put a male and joeys in the mix who knows?

My experience with Trios : My Kassi and Evee (not related) were intoduced when they were about the sma e age at @ 9 weeks. They were housed together just them two for several months. Later on i introduced Rocco.
They all get along great. Kassi had one joey and Evee had one joey aswell. Unfortunatly Evee lost her joey. But not to any ones fault.
It is stressful and worrying to me when ever they have joeys. They both have joeys again. Kassi has 2 and Evee has one. I check them everyday and feed them lots of worms. I do not recommed having trios unless ur are almost sure that they will all get along. Cause it is stressful on all parties if they dont.
A relief to me is that neither of them have dominance issues but the male. So both the females get along.

Thanks for all the input. My girls do get along well but one (she's very small) may be a little dominate because I do see her grabbing the other's mealies. This is the only behavior that has made me wonder. I guess I could try it and separate them later if need be.

I have a colony that all live together- consisiting of my glider sisters, Sydney and Addie, Tori, Aussie and Taz who was just recently added. They all get along well, but the sisters have been together since the oldest, Addie, was 4 weeks oop and Sydney was born. Tori was added when the sisters where 3 months oop and Taz and Aussie were added in December. We did a ton of pouch swapping and so forth. They don't crab at each other and all five clamber into a pouch together during the day. Tori is expecting though, so we pulled her and the father, Taz out to be housed in a cage that is next to the other's cage. This way Taz and Tori can raise the babies with no threat of joey stealing. We still let them all play together in supervised tent time, and they cad still see, hear, and touch each other through the cage bars. So far it seems to be going well!
