Biscuit is at the vet right now. I had to leave him there today. I feel sick with worry. I'm just queasy and terrified. vet checked him while I was there. It's not his liver. It's his right kidney. There is some fluid in there, somewhere, that they found on the ultrasound. They are knocking him out to draw the fluid, get some urine, and draw blood. I leave to go get him in about 45 minutes. He (the vet) couldn't even feel his left kidney. I've been trying to do research on compromised kidney function all day, but I can't focus. I just can't see how this is good. I guess it's better than liver issues, I mean, he has longer. Anyway, any thoughts y'all have on kidney issues, I'll take. I'll do research, and post what I find, too. **Adding in, this is not an infection. Biscuit has no symptoms, I took him in because his tummy has a hard spot. Pray for my Bobo.

Shawna, I'm so sorry. The only thing that comes to mind is diabetes/hypoglycemia. Prolonged condition of either can cause kidney failure. Make sure they check his blood sugar levels. This is often different than the urine levels.
Also, don't know if it can be at all related but...insulinoma in ferrets is cancer of the pancreas. This leads to kidney failure as well. They might want to see if they can check pancreas function.

They are doing all kinds of lab work, I'll ask about the blood sugar when I go in. Thanks.

Shawna, I am so sorry to hear that Biscuit isn't feeling well. I was talking to Mary P, and she asked me to tell you that when Roo passed and she was dealing with understanding the reasons behind it, that Schlep (a GC member) helped alot, and you may want to send him a PM.

Biscuit is just fine. He had NO symptoms. I felt that he had a hard spot in his tummy, which is why I took him in. The vet believes that his right kidney is completely destroyed, and that he is functioning on the left kidney alone. We have no way of knowing, right now, how functional the left kidney is. We know it's working because Biscuit isn't dead. They pulled 5 cc's of fluid out. No, that's not a typo. 5 cc's of fluid from his right kidney. They could not get blood from his tail or from his superior vena cava. So, we will wait and see. Right now we are playing the "when it fills back up, we'll get it drained" game. I am doing lots and lots of research on diet/compromised kidney function. That is the only treatment open to Biscuit, that I know of. Biscuit looks great. He is not jaundiced, he is a good weight, 125 grams before we removed the fluid, still very active and curious. He is completely asymptomatic. I do have some information at home that I will be sharing later tonight. Educational type stuff. I hope you will all read it, as it's good information, food for thought.

Biscuit is in my prayers. I can't imagine what you are going through.
I've had Bugsy for less than two weeks and I am sooo in love with him. Everytime I read a post about a sick suggie, I go to his cage and look at him and I get all choked up. My animals are my kids, whereas I have no human ones. Not that that matters; even people with human children love their animals unconditionally (as it should be).
Positive thoughts and prayers to you and your baby.

He was on the list, because someone else had sent his name my way. Now he is much higher on the list. Thank you.

Here is what I know so far. I am very frustrated because I can't seem to get much further than this in research. I will keep going though. The kidneys maintain body fluid levels by excreting fluids (and sodium) when the body has an excess amount of fluid and conserve fluid when the body fluid is low (dehydration). The kidneys assist in the regulation of blood pressure through fluid regulation and the secretion of a hormone known as renin. The kidney produces other chemical factors that also aid in the regulation of the body's fluid and electrolyte balance. The kidneys filter the entire blood supply every two minutes in order to perform their major task of waste removal and elimination into the urine. http://www.vitaminsdiary.com/diets/kidney-diseaes.htm is an excellent source of information. diet becomes very important with compromised kidneys, as the kidneys may no longer be as effective at removing waste products and extra vitamins and minerals from the blood stream. Protein: protein is used in muscle building, growth, and tissue repair The waste product of protein is urea—too high concentrations of this in the blood can damage the organs. Here is where liver function becomes very important--the liver converts ammonia to urea (if I remember correctly) and if that part of the liver is damaged, ammonia builds up to toxic levels in the body very quickly. Phosphorus: Phosphorus is found in many foods, and we should be watching it anyway. If phosphorus isn’t removed from the blood stream, it could cause calcium to start leaching from the bones. Here it becomes particularly important to know your calcium phosphorus ratios. Potassium: Potassium is a mineral that helps regulate many body functions. Healthy kidneys keep the right amount of potassium in the blood stream, but a diseased kidney might not be able to do so, allowing the potassium to build up. This build up can cause abnormal heart rhythms, possibly resulting in death.

Good news, I had Biscuit out last night for nail clipping. He looks very good. His tummy is still noticeably smaller than it was. I don't feel anything, no hard spots or anything that would indicate the kidney is filling back up with fluid. So, we are doing well! Still no signs that Biscuit feels ill, at all.

Sue, I wouldn't ask Biscuit to tell Junior that. It involves lots of fleece, treats and band-aids! He HATES having his nails cut! Erica, I will, thanks! More good news. The culture came back completely clear of any infection. The vet said it was sterile (as fluid inside your body should be). Also, no cancer cells or any other weirdness floating around in there. Woot!

He is good for now, but we will have to watch him for the rest of his life. His life is likely to be shorter than normal, because he does have issues. The vet is convinced that his left kidney has some damage to it. He'll be up and down, mostly up for now. More down as time goes by.
