I'm sure they can, even by picking up changes in our voice intonations and breathing, pheromones released, body heat fluctuations, facial expressions, general movement, and I bet they can even hear our heart beating. Chante's pretty indifferent but Dante (and even moreso a previous pet rat and my ferret that I ahve now) would always be more lovey on my down days and more apprehensive when I was mad.

I think so too! When i first got Belle she was scared to death of me (as i her as she was very crabby and lungy)But after a couple days i went to her age with more confidence and the mind set i wasnot afraid of her and I was able to get her out and pet her.It was a lot diffrent. Saw with dogs and cats.If they sense you are sick they willbe more calm and affecinate that day. My hubby was sick with pnemonia a year ago and our cat is the most playful thing but while he was sick he layed there in the bed with him about the whole time.

A few years back, I got very very sick. The only glider I had at that time was Brodey. The whole time I was sick, Brodey refused to leave my side. That was the first and only time he's ever been willing to sleep in my pocket (usually he sleeps in my bra or under my hair). For 2 weeks strait, he slept in my pocket almost 24/7. Also, for those 2 weeks, not once did he try to run off any play, poop/pee on me, or do anything that might have caused me stress. Also, he ate his dinner with me and would actually try to feed me pieces of his food... My baby knew I didn't feel good and he tried to everything he could to make sure I was comfortable.

I think Mikey is right on this one. I'm not sure they so much "sense" our mood as "smell" our moods. When we are sick, we will smell differently. Since gliders are so scent oriented, it seems that they would detect the subtle changes in our scent with our mood changes. Our scent will change with the different hormones being released with each type of mood.
Gliders in the wild try to hide their illnesses, why? because other's can "sense" or smell the illness leaving them vunerable to prey.
I believe that some canabalized joeys are because they get ill and the parents can "sense" or smell the changes in the joey and they canabalize to protect "the colony" (even if it is just a pair) from that scent drawing in prey.

Christmas Day I had the family over. My nephew is 10 and loves animals. Honey and Sweet Pea started barking as people arrived and everybody ignored them except Will. He was scared and ran. Well they chased, barked and nipped at him knowing full well the child was scared of them. The cats hissed at him and the suggies crabbed. So I'm a firm believer that we do release scents, energy, attitude, etc. that our little creatures can interpret.

I think all creature can sense change. I'm pretty confident my gliders know when something is diffrent. As others have said they will react to whatever mood I'm in! They also have learned our patterns at home. It's funny to me that we are constantly trying to figure them out....as I'm sure they will always be trying to figure us out! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shakehead.gif" alt="" />

I'm pretty sure Suki can sense my moods. One day I was really sad and crying and she was absolutely the sweetest. Came up and licked the tears off my face. Maybe she just liked the salt in it but it was still the best thing ever!

Well, considering people can sometimes sense the moods of others, I would assume that most any animal can and to say they don't would be fairly outlandish im my opinion. I can often tell when Travis is upset the moment he looks at me, or when there is some type of disturbance in the household without hearing a word or seeing a thing. Then again, I have a dencent sized "family" living with me, and its very improtant to get those stressed situations under controle before they effect everyone...Maybe it is because most animals humans keep once were, or have become accustom to living in a group that they, like myself, NEED to know when soemone is upset to stop a problem before it starts. We have very little money, so it is a constant source of stress to the point that most days, everyone is on the verge of some sort of emotional outburst that everyone needs to be in harmony. If one person is upset, yells, the next is upset and so on and so forth...Being socail creatures, Gliders must have that sense as well. The same with dogs, though less so with cats, being they tend to enjoy a singular domain, but I won't lie and say that my cat isn't vastly more cuddly when I'm sick, though he avoids me when I'm upset because I have a tendancy to grab him in a hug and cry on him hehe.

one day, actually last week (or the week before i don't remember) I was getting my male from the pouch for bonding. He isn't quite a bra baby yet, so i fabricate the tanktop etc. Normally he gets the hint fairly quickly Well at the same time, the phone rang. Guees who? SOLICITOR!!!!! So immediately and uncontrollably i become extremely annoyed. he hops to my shoulder and won't budge (under the shirt, and my wheel wasn't up and his nails weren't clipped and it was less than pleasant - but not his fault so i remained calm) but, i know he could either smell or sense tension, so i put him back with Faye while i explained to the telemarketer from *insert company here* that they'd been calling me all week in spite of the do not call list, and that the public utilities commission would not be happy, and that he should take down my number to inform his supervisor that this is the phone number about to register a complaint with the PUC!!!!!! UGGGHH!!! once i calmed down i took both of my babies in a bonding pouch, and all was well. The moral of the story - don't answer the phone if it might be a telemarketer and one of your babies is with you ^_^.

[:"brown"] I think they can. I remember a few months back I was feeling really down, my hubby had just been sent away to train in El Paso, I was still in AZ. I let Lilo and her colony out to play while I watched TV, usually she is the most active glider of the group, instead she stayed with me and groomed me. I would put her on the couch to run off but she would just come right back to me, it was like she knew I needed her companionship at that time. [/]
