I have a concern about Flurry's nails. She was pne of my first suggies. She was rehomed to us. She has very weird nails on her rear legs. They look like scythes. They are really thick and practically curl all the way into her foot. I was able to clip them really well tonight so they look a lot better. Does anyone know what may cause this? I am wondering if she just never had her nails trimmed in her previous home. Is there anything I can do to encourage them to grow normally? Sorry, I tried to take pics but she was ahv/ng none of it. I guess getting weighed and nails trimmed was enough excitment for the day

sounds to me like she has just never had her nails trimmed. You may be better off taking her to the vet to haev them trimmed a couple of times. Or, if you feel comfortable, get her under a SUPER bright light so you can see the quick, and cut them as close as you can without pinching the blood vessel and nerves. Keeping them trimmed will cause the nerves and blood vessels to withdraw further into the nailbed, and you will be able to trim them shorter each time, until eventually they should be normal.

I think I know what you are talking about and saw nails like you described on the back feet of a rescue glider at WAGG this year. You can train the nail to grow properly by cutting an upside-down "V" notch on the underside of the nail. I don't know what causes the thickness.
I found a post with pictures of the nail growth like the rescue glider. Is that what they look like? I don't think cutting the nails short would help. Just cut the very tips, and try to remove only the thickness. HTH!

Snickerdoodle's nails were like that one his front and back feet. I clipped them the first night because of how long they were.

Are they really think underneath? Our rescue has the same thing. Our vet said it was extra growth and it can be removed. She kinda just peeled it away, my girl hated it but it worked.

Yeah she let me trim them pretty close so hopefully they will re shape after a while. Would maple, white or red oak or ash branches be safe for them? We live next door to a nature reserve so we have access to tons of branches. They are on our property as well. Thanks for all the help.

Maple is fine as long as it is not RED maple, that is toxic! Oak is toxic too, but I am not sure about Aspen. Do you have any pear or apple trees? Those asre great I can send you a few pear branches if you like Dee, let me know.

Ash is ok, oak is not, nor red maple as Robin said. With nails like that, they sometime grow faster than regular nails (or seem to) They can be caused by overgrowth, but can also be caused by health issues (possibly relating to the liver) and changes in environment (my pair's nails started growing like this after I switched them to a reptarium from a pvc cage).
I trim every other week, but when my pair's nails started growing like this, I had to trim sometimes twice a week to keep the growth in check. I use cuticle nail clippers and put my thumb nail between the nail and the toe pad and put the edge of the clippers against my nail. I clip them at an angle (so their nail looks more like it is supposed to naturally).

Hey I posted about this on MOJO about 1 or 2 months ago & the people that responded either didnt know what I was talking about or told me I was trimming her nails wrong. The thing is, Mojo is a bay still & that was to be her 1st cut but I have been doing Bandit's for a long time. Suz sent me an email & I trimmed it llike she said & since then I have done her nails 3 times and they are now normal.
