I just found a problem that could have been deadly, had I not looked inside a pouch last night! I always do a pouch check in the morning when I get up to make sure there have been no mis-haps the previous night. Yesterday I checked as usual and found no problems. Last night we had guests over, and one of them asked to see the Suggies. While we were looking, I noticed a little head bobbing up and down in a pouch. I thought maybe he had a nail stuck, so I peeked inside to see. Thank Goodness I did! He or a cagemate had chewed a little hole in their pouch. This is a double layer pouch with invisible stitching (stitching on the inside). It was one of several that I bought on eBay several months ago - very well made and good quality. HOWEVER, In between the layers had been left a very long thread. When the inside layer was chewed through, the thread was pulled out and somehow wrapped around my little Care Bear. In an effort to get loose, he wound it around and around him, also pulling fleece around him, so tight that I had to make several cuts to get it off of him and out of his fur!!! It was so tight it left an indentation in his fur! Had I not noticed it then, he could have died. If I didn't do daily pouch checks, he definatley would have died! PLEASE, PLEASE, check your pouches everyday!!! And pouch makes, please trim the threads even if they are on the inside or between layers!

wow, that's so scary! I'm glad you found him sooner than later!
I always snip my thread ends, no matter if they are going to be inside or outside. I'm so scared of suggies getting hurt!

Wow! Talk about scarey! I'm so glad that you found him in time! Hopefully your experience will help others though when they make pouches, especially vendors.

Good for mommy! You found your baby in time! I'm glad things worked out the way they did. You know, there can be accidents with ANY type of pouches, including single pouches... so just keep checking everybody!

Yes, you are right - any kind of pouch needs to be checked.

Wow... Thanks for letting us know and I'm glad everything is ok. Does this mean that double pouches are dangerous?

Thanks for sharing. I'm glad everything's okay. This is a really good reminder that anything ( pouches and toys) that seems safe has the potential to become dangerous if not checked on a daily basis!

I had this same thing happen twice to me. The first time, I had just taken in some rescue gliders and somehow the female got a string wrapped around her leg so tight that when I checked on them, her foot was completely purple and freezing cold. Not to mention she was still stuck to the pouch so had I not checked on them, she wouldn't have been able to leave to eat, drink, or go to the bathroom. I was sure she was going to lose her foot, but she didn't. It didn't work 100% when I first got her out of the snare, but after moving it a little and getting her blood flow back, she was good to go and didn't lose her foot! THAT POUCH WENT OUT THE DOOR!
The second time, I had a double layer pouch and I went to check on everyone one night and couldn't find one of them. Come to find out after removing the pouch from the cage, one of them had chewed through it, and the male was inside the two layers "hiding". He was fine but it scared me to death because I couldn't figure out for 1. How he got out, and 2. why the others were still in the cage if he had escaped, and finally 3. where he went and how he got out! The cage was sealed up tight! And again, THAT POUCH WENT OUT THE DOOR!

An update: Several nights ago, he started pulling out his hair all the way around where the string had been and it was bleeding! Out comes the Collesate Spray! (stinky stuff) And next would come the e-collar. (I gave him one chance with Collesate before I put on the collar) However, he is leaving it alone and the skin is already pinked over! I get him out and put it on twice a day. Then he gets a few mealies for being such a good boy! That Collesate works miracles! I use it on my dogs and myself at times. I have the cream too, and it works even faster! Today AM: Well, as you all know, Gliders can go down hill quickly. I have to remove CB from his family, as I think the others were licking and pulling his hair on his back (where he can't reach) and now he is pulling at the hair on his tummy and at the "wing" base. I can't keep a collar on him. I've tried several different ones. Either he pops it off, or it's so tight his tongue sticks out. He uses all 4 legs, hooks them under the collar - even choking himself - until he gets it off. The collesate - no bother at all! Cream or spray, he just licks it off! And it is still good, fairly new; I can smell the nasty stuff! It looks like a spot on his tummy is getting infected, so it's off to the vet for us! I'm hoping for a little pain med and anti-biotics for him. Geez! And he looked so good the first 2 nights after I got him unstuck! Today PM: We went to the doc. She gave him some pain med and antibiotics, and we will continue with the Collesate. I am alternating the cream wtih the spray. The spray has more icky deterent stuff in it, but the thick cream seems to promote faster healing. I credit the cream to saving part of Turbo's tail. Hopefully he will be better quickly! He hates being in a separate cage!

I am so sorry this has happened to your baby!! I hope he heals fast! As for the pouches, I bought one on ebay ( will not name.. dont wana trash people) but the pouch had loops inside, it was advertised as seamless, and it was but the part where the vendor has sewed it together after turning right side in was inside the pouch and the strings were loose and there were loops. I told the vendor and she replaced it and had me throw the other one away.. Just because I was curious I took apart the new one.. when I started to take it apart I was suprised at how easy it pulled apart.. inside of the pouch every time she stopped a stitch there was a long thread... (about 4-5 in) It was so lazy.. she couldnt even take the time to cut them! There was enough loose thread in there to make my cat a play ball!! Needless to say I will NOT buy any more pouches.. I will just make mine so I know they are safe. I would dread to think what could have happened to a glider if it had chewed a hole and got inside this pouch!!!

I've also had a glider chew a hole in a double pouch. Thankfully, I pouch check at least twice a day when I check the water bottles. I just don't think it's possible to be too careful! Thank goodness you all checked your pouches and saved your babies!

Chelsie, this sounds like the same eBay vendor I bought mine from! Same description! I wrote to her and told her about the threads and my baby being cut up by them and having to go to the vet, and she never even responded to me! I had 8 of her "seamless" pouches and have removed them all. They were reasonably priced but this one has cost me $90.00 in vet bills, and my baby has spent 2 weeks away from his family to get healed and take antibiotics and pain meds! Like you, I will definately make all my own now. I had been making them before, but got several Rescues in house and needed some more pouches right away. BIG regret!

I have written to this woman on ebay twice now, and she still will not respond. I want to make sure she is more careful in the future and that everyone who bought her stuff is really careful about checking for holes and threads.
My baby is healing well on the outside, but I think he has internal injuries. He still is not walking very well- very slowly he moves.
I feel so bad about it! And a bit mad that this woman won't even say she'll trim her threads from now on.

Honestly, it would be helpful to the rest of the community to share who the vendor is. Not responding to a potential hazard is uncalled for. Karin

I am sorry that your glider has paid the price for someone's negligent sewing. I wish him well. I agree it would be very helpful to the rest of us if we knew who not to buy our pouches from. I could see it if the unnamed person took the time to correspond with you but she has not and also has not changed her way of sewing for the gliders. It would be a shame for someone unknowing who it is to buy from them and have the same issue. Please for the sake of the gliders let us know who this vendor is. Get well soon little CB

Any time I sew---doesn't matter if it's for me or someone else---safety is the #1 priority in my books. I will NOT let ANY loose strings (inside OR out) pass my close inspection. There's no project that warrants short-cutting like not clipping loose threads...I'll send something out a day or 2 late rather than short-cut!!!! I also want to give EVERYONE out there in glider world a heads up on using cotton material: Unless it's "fray-proofed" by using a serger or zig-zag cut AND zig-zag sewn, the cotton material WILL create a problem similar to a loose thread. I don't like working with cotton myself for this very reason...but on those occasions when I do, I make double-certain it's as SAFE as I can make it.

This person goes by " gliding4love" on eBay. (Not to be confused with Meredith who is the original user of this name.) I have been in contact with others who have bought pouches from her and had the same problem, so this is not an isolated event, nor me trying to cause problems. My baby can no longer walk or jump like he did before the thread incident. That pouch from " gliding4love" on eBay has changed his whole life, and cost more in vet bills than the pouches were worth. NOTHING is worth my babies' lives and health! I had 8 pouches from " gliding4love" and quit using them that day!

I pretty much stick to Karin's elfin houses. My gliders love them and they are made good. I will not buy off ebay except for a cage for my babies.

I know this is going to sound crazy but my Junior won't use a pouch - All my other breeding gliders had pouches and used them - Junior refuses to - So ya know those neckerchiefs (not too sure what they're called) that cowboys put around necks - I bought several in different colors - then I bought a plastic igloo not too sure what it was for but Junior loves it - I'll take the neckerchiefs out every other day and give him 2 more - and he'll take one and cuddle up in it inside his igloo - or he'll just roll himself up in one outside the igloo and go nite-nite - I never said any of my animals were intelligent but Junior takes the cake - the only two pouches I have are for me to take him out and about when we go visiting or shopping - Sue owned by & mom to
