I agree, peacock feathers are a DELIGHT for suggies.

But Tiger Lilly insists that I relay this warning: THEY ARE FOR SUPERVISED PLAY ONLY!!! She lost (most of) her tail because one got wrapped around the center axle of the exercise wheel (yes, she still yells at ME too about having the WRONG KIND OF WHEEL in there, etc---rookie's mistake).

Here's a rule of thumb about feathers:

"Feathers from a bird of prey? Suggie says NO WAY!
Feathers from a bird we eat? Suggie says WHAT A TREAT!
Feathers having color or dye? Suggie says DON'T LIE!"

Putting it in human words: Don't use feathers from a hawk, eagle, owl, or other bird classified as a "bird of prey". I also have a policy against using feathers that are red/green/blue (unless Mother Nature MADE them that color). How would you like to find a blue-mouthed glider? No thanx.

Chickens, ducks, geese, quail, pheasants, peacocks (somebody somewhere probably eats them...) are all good for playtime AS LONG AS they're not the short downy feathers...they'd be too easy to be swallowed & choked on.

How to add them to toys? Quill end into pony beads threaded with thin strips of fleece is a good starter. Use your imagination beyond there! thumb

Oooo I hadn't thought of peacock feathers!

The lady down the road from me raises all kinds of fowl, including peacocks!

I'm gettin' me some feathers!

Should you treat them with heat of anything so they are clean?

I purchased the peacock feathers from a pet store. My pet duck molts every year and I use them as well, I dont do anything to them because typically ducks dont have pests. but other bird feathers I would just wash and make sure they are pest free. I think ones from a pet store would be clean already. the peacock feathers are great as they are so long and you can tease from a distance. Long feathers are never left in the cage, but I have occasionally left feathers from my duck in there and have never had a problem.

??? why not use feathers from a hawk or owl???

Seems like if you were to use feathers from a hawk or an owl they would be able to smell the "predator" on them.

oh yeah...and I have an owl feather too. here's an interesting bit...of course I know guinea pigs are different than gliders (duh) but one day after working with the WOLVES i came home and went to pet my piggy and thought he would be scared of me cause of the wolf smell...didnt bother him one bit. he even met one of the wolves face to face (chain link fence between them) he didnt seem to realize he was supposed to be scared. LOL
