I'm having a problem with one of the females in my colony of 5... There are two males in the group. Recently there has been some crabbing so I've been watching them closely to see what the problem is and who is not getting along.

I have noticed that the males are crabbing when one of the females is messing with their male parts. I'm not sure if she is cleaning them or what but they crab and yell at her when she is messing with them, so whatever she is doing is hurting them...she seems to be on a mission, and if either one's penis is out she goes for it, even when they are out of their pouch. I am worried she may have injured one of the males, the very tip on one side of his penis is discolored (black)

I have a vet appointment set up for tomorrow morning. Has anyone experienced behavior like this or have any insight for me? I will try to get a good pic of the penis too so you can see what I am talking about. This is a non breeding colony, one neutered male and one possibly sterile. The female who is misbehaving may possibly have joeys IP, she looks a little big, but I haven't been able to feel any joeys so maybe she s just getting chunky... I am going to seperate her from the group tonight to prevent her from hurting the boys anymore but I don't know where to go from there. Is there any way to stop this behavior?

This is an emergency!!!!!! Please get the injured male to a vet ASAP!!! If you wait until tomorrow, it will get much worse!!!

The female senses something is wrong with his penis and is trying to "fix" it. That would be my guess.

Please let us know what the vets says and how your little male does, but please, hurry to the vet NOW!

If this is a non-breeding colony, how could the female be possibly pregnant? If she is pregnant, maybe she's afraid the males are going to hurt the joeys. You're doing the right thing by separating her. I would have the possibly sterile male neutered soon. If she's pregnant, then he's not sterile.

One male is possibly sterile. So, the female may or may not be preggo.

Your best bet is keeping her separate and getting your little boy to a vet asap. The sooner the better. With any type of genital injury, I consider it an emergency.

It appears that part of the penis was nipped off, the very tip on Snow, the black on the tip is neucrtic tissue. Simba, the other male was also injured. Everything looked normal before, but now there is some black necrotic tissue on part of his penis as well. I will be keeping the female seperate for good, with one of the other femles she was raised with. Clearly they can no longer be together. Btw she is not preggo, just gained some weight. vet gave me pain meds and I will be monitoring them and watching that it does not progress. I always though that neucrotic tissue had to be removed, but Dr Nye said it should just come off and heal on itls own. Unless it gets worse swollen or more red he said we don,t need to put anything on it. Dr is hoping to prevent self mutation by leaving it be.

Back home, gave the boys their pain medicine and they are sleeping now. My poor babies

I'm so sorry. The female did this to both males??? I am wondering what is going on with her? I am so sorry about having to spearate them. Please keep us updated on the males' health!

What a good mommy you are for paying attention to all that crabbing! I am so sorry you and your babies are having to go through this. Those poor boys ~ wonder WHAT was going on. I've heard of penis injuries ending with neucrotic tissue that DID heal up fine without surgical removal of the tissue. I would be a nervous wreck trying to keep my eye on them. Hopefully the female was the only one on a mission to fix 'em and they'll leave their private parts alone. Maybe they're not in TOO much pain and only crabbing at her to leave them alone. But I guess otherwise you may not have noticed as soon as now if she weren't messing with them.

Thank you for getting them to the vet so fast!!!! I'm so sorry you have to go thru this. You might want to have the female checked out to see of she's having any problems that would cause her to be so aggressive.

that is just awful what happened to your boys. Glad you were able to get them treated right away. How in the world are you going to keep an eye an their penises?

vet looked at the female today a bit and checked for babies, but I will be taking her in for a more though exam. This group was all getting along fine until about a week or two ago, I had cut back on the fruits and veggies one day since so much goes to waste, and of the other females Nala went crazy and got really food agressive. So I immediatley went back to the old amounds, spread out the dishes and let the others eat first. After a few days she settled down, but then they started crabbing again so I watched and last night I saw what Godie was doing to the boys. I have no idea why she is doing this I have never heard of anything like this before.

I sure hope that they heal okay and don't have any issues b/c of this. Poor Simba has been through enough already, this is the last thing he needs. This is all just too much for me

So I spoke with Mary on the phone and she said that it the black part should be amputated on both gliders so it doesn't spread. I am praying it does not come to that... My regular vet is out of town until next week...we are going back for a recheck next week unless it gets worse before then. Mary also said to put the KY on it...the vet said not to put anything to prevent SM... but if they keep them out that's not good either. Double checking with the vet now on the KY.

vet stood by the recommendation to not put anything on it. Don't know what to do...going to keep watching them and see if they put it away or not...

Erin have you searched the board posts to find others when they were in similar situations? I have also heard to apply a lubricant on several occasions when a gliders penis would not retract. (Do not recall if there was neucrotic tissue or not though.) I imagine it may be up to the particular glider if they try to lick it off or not Have you thought about contacting Val to see if she's had any experience with this?

i vote for the ky and so would my vet! please keep their penis lubricated if they dry out much more could dry out and have to be amputated! Contact Jackie Chans mom she has glider penis experience too. not trying to go against vets advice but he is wrong this time.

I went ahead and put the ky on since they still had not retracted their penises. I am watching them so figured I might as well. I have e collars if I need them and extra cages. Their penises retracted fully about a half hour after I applied it. Necrosis has not spread lastI chcked. Simba was licking at first, I had to keep distracting him. Now they seem okay. I gave them some new toys to play with. Their monkey barrel toy fell down and they love it lol they keep climbing in there. Ill keep you all posted how they are doing.

Its going to be a long night but I will be thinking good thoughts for your boys. I cannot imagine what caused the female to do this to your boys.........I have never heard of such unless they have a UTI or something................Good to know you have ecollars. Glad their penises retracted!

Good deal. I'm thinking the bad tissue should just fall off eventually. At lease with the back and forth with the ky you'll get to keep an eye on if they're looking better or worse.

I've heard to take a cotton ball across every bar on the cage to check for rough edges. Maybe there was a female in heat and the boys were chasing her with their boy parts hanging out. What are the chances they rubbed the same rough spot? but SOMETHING happened SOMEHOW.

My vet seemed confident they dead tissue would fall off and surgery would not be needed. I see my regular vet Wednesday, so we'll see what they think about how they are healing then...

I have no idea what was going on with them. To me it looked like she was cleaning them at first and they did not like it, but then I saw her grab at Snow when he was running around and I knew she was hurting him. Something is going on with them, and with such a large group it's hard to pinpoint what caused the behavior. Goldie is super spoiled princess, she only nips me if I restrain her and fuss if she does not get her way.

I too wonder if she was in heat, I did not see any signs of that, Simba used to try to mate before he was neutered (He too is possibly sterile and never produced). They are in a suggie gym rept, so I don't think there is anthing they could injure themselves on...

I know you're probably busy with babies and getting ready for SGGA, so I'm hoping no news is good news.

Update! The boys have finally sluffed ALL of the neucrotic tissue I saw Dr. Ness today and he said everything looks nice and healthy, plus Simba has gained about 10 grams since last time I wonder if all those little treats at the SGGA had anything to do with that At least they worked for them opening the little tooth boxes most of the time. I am so relieved and happy that the boys are okay. I told Dr. Ness I put the KY and he's said that was the right thing to do! I'm glad I went ahead and followed Mary's advise! I can not thank everyone that helped me through this enough, I don't know what I would do with out GC or the people in this community when times get hard you guys are always there to help

lol yeah Goldie is not longer with them, she apparently instigated everything. Nala is back so there are 4 of them now. Some of you got to meet tham all at the SGGA.
