Ok I have an older glider that is loosing weight, and fast. **I have gotten medical attention for him** can any of you all suggest a diet that will help him pack back on the grams?! He is currently on HPW fruits/veggies (which he is not wanting to eat much minus his fav. peas and corn!) At this point I have been giving him lots of mealies and apple sauce licky treats just to get some "extra" food in him. Thanks!

Would Darcy's diet help in this case? Not really sure, but I did read up about it a while ago and maybe that could be an option for you all so that he can gain some weight...

Avocado will make him into a chunky dumpling in no time. Did your vet say why he was losing weight? Was your vet concerned about it? Did your vet offer any advice to "plump" him back up?

He said at this point in time, feed him what ever he will eat! I have been really loading him up on mealies and applesauce. (His favorites) He will not touch the HPW. I have thought about the Darcy's diet. I have the van. ensure, but I need to find the vitamines to go with it. I will pick up avacado (sp?) today, I have never offered this to my kids, cause I knew it was such a high source fat. He has gained 2 grams, but still last night I gave him a HUGE variety of baby foods....he didn't really touch much of it. He did like the blueberry & apple sauce though and of course ate all the mealies. The vet said his fecal was neg. and that he wanted me to remove him from the area all the other gliders are in. He has been over grooming himself, although that started a couple months ago when he was neutered, and I just kinda blew it off as it has become a habit. So I guess I am going to get the stuff for Darcy's diet and see if we can't get some weight on him. He dropped to 112 and was 114 this morning!

Whatever he will eat...well...that doesn't sound like the best of advice for any diet... You might try some lean ground beef out on him. I'm trying to think of any other high fat foods that are still fairly healthy.

I would NOT use the ground beef.
Avacado is a good source of calories and the "fat" in it is the "good" kind of fat. Avacados are very healthy but are fattening.
Wax worms might be a good alternitive to the mealies. They are soft "shelled" (compared to the extoskeleton of mealies) and are much higher in fat than mealies.

"The what ever he will eat" was along the lines of which ever balanced diet you can get him to eat. I think I may try Darcy's diet for a bit. He will not touch the HPW. The vet seems to think it is stress related?! So he has been moved now and I am hopeing with some time, he continues to improve. I will gladly take the 2 gram gain this morning!

I'm not Teresa, but I can help you with the beef question Lovely. Red meat contains a fairly high amount of iron which has been linked to liver disease in gliders. That's even why a lot of us tend to avoid citrus fruits in our glider's diets. Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron... you get the connection. LOL Did your vet say WHY he was losing weight? Did you get a diagnosis? We have another glider on the board that has been having digestion problems and the vet prescribed vionate. Sprinkled on the food it sort of "pre-digests" is, making it easier on the tummy, and allowing the glider's gut to absorb more of the nutrients. I hope you find something your baby will eat and he gets better. But NO BEEF!

Robin ~ There was no diagnosis as of yet. We decided to move him to a room all by himself and see if it wasn't a stress related issue. He has gained 4 grams, then lost a gram. I will admit I was running SUPER late this morning for work, and didn't have time to get out any of my gliders. So I do not have his weight for today. If the quiet does not seem to help. Then we will look into blood work.

I don't know how good or bad for them it is, but when my boy started dropping in weight, I gave him peanut butter (freshly ground, no additives) I wouldn't give to much but this was also before I started reading about different diets. Maybe someone here can yay or nay this suggestion.

Darcy's at least short term.. but watch his fluid intake (fruits/veggies and water both)- ensure CAN cause dehydration. Also full fat yogurt and avocado can be treats, but make sure he is getting a balanced diet beyond that. There are other things out there. I don't push the worms- they are fatty, but also high in Phosphorous... I have had good luck with gliders that ate a fair amount of BML but were still not packing the weight on fast enough with early morning (post eating) treats of ensure and a standard BML diet (this was several years ago). Good luck!

I tried avocado, he wont touch it! He gained some weight. He got down to 112 and is now back and forth between 115 and 116

I know with humans, it is normal to fluctuate up to 4lbs one way or the other during the day, just based on how much you've perspired, restroom breaks, mealtime, etc. Probably the same thing with gliders? I'd weigh him the same time each day, maybe in the morning when he's gotten a little sleepy, or even every 3-4 days for a better idea of gain and loss.

good point- we always weigh our gliders at about the same time of day, and variance due to vet visits being at other times have shown!
