i had a question. I feed my reptiles and tree frogs hornworms. Are these nutritional and safe to feed gliders? I guess i never thought of it. I absolutely hate the way they look and i'm all tongs with them, no way im touching them like my superworms (mealies are ok with me) but I do know they are very nutritious for the reptiles and frogs, just wondering if anybody has ever considered them? My retailer says someone buys them non-stop for their gliders? If they are not ok or not safe no biggie, thats basically all i wanted to know and at this time, i wouldnt feed them until advised otherwise. Just curiosity struck i guess. here is the info on them: Calcium - 46.4mg/100g Fat - 3.07% no exoskeleton or chitin to worry about and no corn in their gutload, i am assuming meaning aflotoxin risk not there?? curiosity struck when he said a glider breeder feeds them continuously and they love them. I want to know if they are safe and nutritious or not. I have never heard of gliders eating hornworms? Kristy

Kristy - from the research I did last year, I became a bit worried about feeding hornworms to my gliders. I think a great deal of their diet can be made up of either tomato or tobacco - either of which I wouldn't feel giving to my gliders in large concentrations. I decided to let mine all morph into moths, and then toss a moth into the tent during tent time and let the gliders hunt. It was a HUGE riot! I'm not sure why I believe the moths are safer than the worms. That is one of those illogical beliefs I hold! I *think* - from the response I got last year - I was one of the only ones to ever consider feeding them to my gliders. But, perhaps now, a year later, you'll get more response?

Yes, you can feed hornworms, they are safe (as long as they are captive bred feeders, wild caught horn worms and hawk moths are NOT safe - for the reasons that Alden stated above). Something you may also like to try (and your gliders would LOVE) is letting the worms morph into their moth form (hawk moths) and let the gliders hunt them...FUN!

well it sounds like they are safe. these are disease free, hornworms that eat a speacial diet that is not from any wild plants, as they would be unsafe to the reptiles and frogs then too. wild hornworms are bad,but CB hornworms are good like from the greatlakes hornworm company. thanks alden and gretchen. I am sure the calcium ratios according to diet need to be accounted for but It dawned on me that there might also be another feeder insect treat out there that is safe and healthy. i get wholesale pricing on them so its an fraction of retail pricing asd i have frogs and reptiles to feed as well. I still have to have tweezers LOL but they do pupate into the prettiest moths. I have never said that about a moth LOL but its true. Kristy

Where do you get these, Kristy? I'd love to try the moth thing for my babies!

I just seen these at the pet store where I get my mealies. They are huge and look like the gliders could make a crazy mess of them. Do they make a big mess when they eat them?

you can buy them smaller guys and even raise from eggs. greatlakes hornworms just google greatlakes hornworm and you'll get to their site. its turquoise and white (the sites colors) yes they can get bigger with food....they arent like blood gushers lol. they eat a brownish food, so they are mostly calcium and a bit of fat and water:which is tan in color. you can read up on them at this site. Its by far the best source of hornworms I think there is. Kristy

lol the ones I saw were huge but they also had little ones. But the big ones stood out they were like four inches long maybe bigger. I thought about feeding them to the gliders. Then I thought about the mess because they look like small water balloons(MESSY) and I chickened out. i might have to go get some.

lol yep as long as you keep feeding them they can get that big. If you keep food from them and refrigerate i think for 2 days it will slow their growth and can be fed like a big superworm i guess. Its hard for me to imagine a glider going head first into the 4 inchers, but i guess one bite and they would probably go wild over them.

Is there anything special you need to do with them to get them to morph into moths?

LOL they are water full and calcium enriched with a tiny bit of fat. depends on how large they are I guess. What about butterworms? I get them wholesale too and thery are spendy, you cant breed them, they are from chile. I know they are very nutrtious also as far as calcium for reptiles and have a sweet smell to them. I can check out their ratios of fat to calcium to protein in a bit. kristy

ok butterworms, smaller than horn worms, fruity smell, can be stored for up to 4-6 months in fridge with no food and still be ok. very high in calcium, twice that of other feeders. nonly downfall is they can not be bred and it has been attempted unsuccessfully here in the USA Moisture 58.54 Ash 1.04 Protein 16.20 Fat 5.21 Calories/Fat 87.73 Calcium (ml/100 grs)

I know that people have tried butterworms before. If I recall correctly (again ) some gliders don't like them very much. I personally don't like feeding something that is wild caught, which butterworms are (from my understanding, but maybe I am misunderstanding).

i would say they are cb in chile and imported. good question. i'll ask my vendor. They do smell sweet. heck i think crickets are by far (and agreed by my exotic vet) to be the nastiest, most parasite ridden insect. they carry tapeworm, coccidia, lungworm, hookworm and roundworm. Just an FYI. Thats one feeder i will never feed my gliders. i'm going to email about the butterworms and get back to the topic as soon as my vendor emails me back. I really think we just cant breed them and chile can, not just taken from outside, but always good to check. Especially with someone like me and so OCD about parasites. Kristy
