Nine months ago I removed Mickey from the Colony and left Abbey, Star, her daughter and two young babies (4 females) all together in the cage until the first of Jan. without dividing them up and placing them with males. On the 9th of Jan. I put a new male (Ace) 9 months old and a first time breeder in with them. Abbey was 3.5 years old and a good breeder. A week after I put him in, Abbey and him bred and there was a fight. Abbey had a small hole punture in her back that I discovered about 10 days after the breeding. I checked her a couple of times a week to see if it had gotten larger. Last Thursday, I checked her because for two days the trio's plate had not been cleaned. I went to the vet that day and got some antibiotic for her. The wound was wide but not deep, but looked infected. I noticed that the wound started to look better after medication was given- infection going away and the appetite picked up after two days. Today I found Abbey on the floor of the age dead with her back eaten to the bone. Judie said she felt like that was done after she died. I noticed last night that Cassiopea was out playing, but abbey and Ace stayed in the bag, but there was no fighting going on. Also, I had added a second bag in there last night and this morning I found Cassiopea in a separate bag from Ace. I am sad that I have lost another glider. Abbey was a 100% Leucistic Het female. I would have removed Abbey from the group, but I am leaving town this weekend for the Glider Retreat in Tx. and Abbey has never been alone. Now I have to worry about Cassio being stressed of losing her mother. I am posting this for informational purposes. Many time you have this type of injury when males are moved around and females don't have time to get to know them before they breed with them. I think in Abbey's case she had not been with a male in a long time and resisted him. I am so sorry this happened to her. I decided that I would remember Abbey when she was happy before I removed Mickey and would like to show you a picture of her happy family. She is the one on the right
Sheila I am so sorry for you loss… and it sends shivers down my back, I have been nursing my Sage after Mango did this to her a second time, she has been on Meds for two weeks and is doing great, I was thinking about letting the all spend a night together in the ‘big’ cage… but that idea is out until Mango gets Neutered. Again I a sorry for you loss but you have helped me realize that it is just better to keep my three apart for now.
Oh Sheila..I am so sorry...I know this had not been a good year so far..I am praying for you and all your gliders health daily. Now Simeon has another friend with him.
Sheila, I am so sorry for your lost. Many hugs sent your way and praying that Cassiopea will be fine.
