Everyone feeds their gliders at differnt times at night depending on when they get up. I am curious as to how long everyone leaves their food in their cage before pulling it??

I ask because when you have things like fresh fruits and veggies, it has moisture on it. When it sits out all night, eventually it will grow bacteria on it. By leaving it out for so long (all night) and giving the bacteria a chance to pop up is a good chance why we see alot of bacteria infections in gliders.

So I was wondering if anyone actually kept the food in the cage for a certain amt of time and then pulled it to keep that chance from happening and the gliders taking a risk of getting infected.

PLEASE, no one get alarmed, i'm just bringing across a simple fact and trying to reduce the chances of bacteria infections becoming so easy. I brought it up because I was talking with my vet & his vet tech and they have seen it happen in birds when part of their diet was fresh fruits and veggies and it was left out too long. I am waiting for my vet to get back from a conference for a response on what he thinks/feels is good on when the food should be pulled. I trust his judgement because he went to Australia to study gliders and consults with other exotic vets from around the world so that's why I though i'd discuss this.

I put in my babies food around 8pm every night since that's when they get up. Most of the time they finish up their fruits pretty fast. I take out their food the next morning around 7am.

I'm going to be watching this post....very interesting wink

That's about the same time I do also Tara but that still is enough time for bacteria to set in and the vet tech and I were talking about maybe a total of 3 hours or so. You know, give them time to eat but not enough time for the bacteria to set in.

I'm interested to hear more about this. I could pull their food before I go to bed....I usually stay up til midnight.

The problem I would have with pulling food is they eat all their bml at 9pm but go back to bed and eat the fruit and veggies in the wee morning hours.

I am going to keep checking back.

I feed my pair any time between 8:30 or 9:30 at night, they tell me when they want to get dinner. I take their kitchen out at 8 or 9am the next morning. They go back to bed earlier than that though.

Perhaps there is some kind of natural defense they have against these bacteria, since so many people feed this way and gliders aren't dropping like flies?

i was always curious to know what others in the glider community do or recommend when it comes to their fresh food in the cage. since they're nocturnal and most of us are sleeping while they are up, it draws some concern on leaving their food in there for 8-12 hrs.
i, myself usually prep they're food before i go to bed anytime between 12 and 2am and if i don't take it out in the morning, my little brother will take it out when he wakes around 10a-noon. my girls currently wake up on random times....last week, they would wake up around 3am and sometimes wake up for a little bit during the day. i'm guessing it maybe my blinds that are to keep the sun out and makes my room very dark unless i open all of it.

My crew get fed between 8 & 10 pm every night. If it is more towards 10, they are all out & about and waiting to pounce on me! They will pick at it for a few minutes and then go back to bed. I leave it in all night and have empty dishes each morning, probably 90% of the time. The dishes get soaked in hot water with antibacterial dish soap every night and go thru the dishwasher once a week. I am interested to see what the vet comes up with, too!

I - as everyone else on here - feed Junior about 8pm and take his food out about 6am - replacing it with more fruit and veggies in the am - Junior WILL NOT eat any dry food - I have tried him on every thing imaginable - the dry candy goodies - yogurt - pineapple - apple - etc he'll eat - he's sort of spoiled and I know I made him that way - but at age 4.5 he's not about ready to change - I've tried giving him dry food on top of his fruits & veggies with his HPW on top and he went the whole night without eating - I've made a monster -

My crew also get fed around 9 pm and it remains in the cages all night. I would like to point out that since the HPWIs placed in their cages frozen it buys a little time bacteria wise.

I as well feed anywhere between 8-10 depending on when everyone is up. I feed them the BML forzen, and their veggies frozen, but do give them their fruits fresh. They normally eat their fruit first anyways, and I give them their veggies frozen, this way it takes time to defrost and will stay good a bit longer.

Now that all my children are older ( I had my own liter, literately) I am getting back into gliders again.

The only thing I was concerned about taking out and not leaving in too long was the fruits & veggies. Most gliders end up eating the HPW/BML pretty quickly so i'm not concerned about that. Clean dishes & kitchens should not be a question, my aim is towards the fresh moist fruits & veggies.

Now the bacteria infections i'm talking about is not one that will kill a glider. It's the general ones that pop up in fecals that the vets usually use either Bactrim or Baytril to treat.

That's why my vet questioned it because he told me he can see & tell that my gliders are well taken care of and extremely healthy. However they have been hit off and on wiht this bacteria infection and it should not be happening as much as it had been.

Given that almost all of us leave the food over night, I think the risk of bacterial growth that effects our glider's health is relatively low. If that were not the case, we would ALL have gliders suffering illnesses on a much more frequent basis than we actually see.

As with any food preparation, good handwashing, using clean utensils and fresh foods to begin with are important.

Over buying and storing fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator too long can also be a problem. These can spoil even when refrigerated. Frozen fruits and vegetables should not be thawed and re-frozen. I do not use any of the "smoothie" blended fruit and vegetable combinations for this reason. It requires defrosting the foods then re-freezing them.

Another source of bacteria are things like blender blades and the rubber seals. I run these through the dishwasher to make sure they are sanitized before reuse. I know many people who just rinse these mechanical parts.

Hmmm. Interesting. I have 12 gliders and none of them have ever had a positive fecal. Maybe try providing veggies and fruit in a different manner. I wash my fresh stuff with FIT fruit and veggie wash maybe that makes a difference?

When I first read this thread, I was almost freaked out thinking I was doing something wrong with the way I feed my babies. blush I too feed them between 9 and 10pm and then collect their food dishes at about 7:30 when I get up in the morning. Everything in the dish is usually gone. Mine go for the few mealies I give them, and then their veggies. I really don't know at what time they consume the fruit and BML. This just seems kind of hard to determine because you can't exactly rush a glider to eat, and you want to make sure they get everything they need.

I will be checking back.

I do not leave the food in the cage for more than 10 hours so it does not spoil. I feed about 9:30 and remove the food at 7:30 each morning.

Maybe someone here has the means to test it the food for bacteria throughout the night? At the high school the students do labs where the go arounf the school swabing things for bacteria.

My gliders eat all night, so if I only left the food in for a few hours they would not get enough to eat. If I have be out late I feed them early and change the food when I get home so it does not go bad.

I put my guys food out at 8:00, which is when they awake looking for something. It isn't frozen, but it is still pretty cold. They are asleep by 6:00 AM and that's when I take the dishes out. I've never had a bacterial infection in my guys and I've had them 3 years.

i put the food out for my girls around 10,or even 10:30.
they sleep until then, most of the time i am the one getting them up to eat!!! the food does get out of the cage mornings between 7&9,depending on when i go to work.
there is always food left, too.they get 2 iced cubes w/the pp diet,& they won't finish what i give them. many times i'm throwing out more than what they eat.& they are both well over 150 grs,& also are 5yrs old.i really don't know when they will be 6.they were bred for several yrs,& now are not.this is another home for them, also.they both had 2 other playmates, but playmates escaped the cage 1 nite,& died.we thought this could have caused the change in the amt they ate,but all 4 were together,& it evidently was the younguns' who had always eaten more,as plates were always empty in the a.m. they were on hpw, too, but i went to pp,to see if this would help,it hasn't much improved,so maybe they just don't eat that much.they do eat all the protien we give them, though.
anyhoo, long enough post, just wanted to put my info in.

my girls are doing well, health wise, per last vet visit.
