Last night we heard Loki's cagemate/father, Murry, crabbing really funny. I was in the middle of washing our dog so I asked my bf, Kev, to check on it. He found Loki struggling in his pouch. After he got him out, we discovered Loki was severely dehydrated and barely able to move. We had to act fast and Kev ran to the store to get Pedialyte. Loki went downhill extremely fast...within minutes. I tried to give him water with a little salt, but his jaws unnaturally clenched tight. In less than 15 minutes after we found him he died in my hands while having seizures.

After Kev returned home, he told me he found 3 of Loki's hands caught in the pouch. A hole was chewed through it. Loki's nails were not sharp or pointy. I had clipped them last week. The pouch was a bit shabby and I think that's why he got stuck. He couldn't have been like that for more than 6 hours. He died because the stress of the struggle dehydrated him and made him go into shock. It may have caused other damage to his internal organs, too. He had only got stuck in a glider pouch once before and he had been able himself loose. We are switching to chinchilla bath boxes and throwing out the pouches--except the ones we use for bonding. I'm very angry at myself, because this could have been prevented if we didn't use pouches.

Loki was in my life for 7 years. He was a happy accident. His father, Murry, got Zelda pregnant two days before he was neutered. Murry was only a year old at the point so he was quite precocious. I held Loki when he was big enough to grip onto one of my fingers like it was a tree. He was a beautiful and gentle little guy.

What a pretty boy! I'm so sorry - remember the Bridge! He had seven years with you and now he's at the Bridge, cherishing the love and waiting for you to arrive. I'm so sorry.

jazz28, I am so sorry for your loss. I have come close to losing a glider the same way. There are pouches that have no seams, but you even have to watch them if you have a digger. There are no words to express the sorrw that I know you feel, but I hope you know we hurt with you.

Oh no i am so sory to hear about the accident.
oh man it seems like we are hearing an increase of this sort of accidents...mods would it be plausable to come up with a poll for this and see how hi the % of accidents are among members?...i am starting to get concerned about our pouches in general. I do and also recomend to others to always check pouches regularly, but maybe sometimes this isnt enough i am wondering, some of the accidents dont seem to be from loose thread etc but the material itself....

i'm very sorry to hear of your loss. it's a terrible thing to have a loved one pass on.

i wanted to ask a question, though. how old was that pouch? and was it used constantly? or did you have a few sleeping pouches to swap out? and how did you wash them?

sorry again, it must be difficult for you to talk about it, but i wanted to get information about it for preventative measures. thanks for your help.

Oh, how I hate visiting this particular site. My heart goes out to you. Thank you for posting; I'll be extra diligent about the pouches I use.

I agree you should ALWAYS check your pouches for wear. I am so sorry to hear of your little one ! I learned how to make my own pouches and now I make new ones every 2-3 months depending on wear. I also make sure NO STRINGS are visible or dangling. I bought a pouch on ebay from a lady, and it was full of strings hanging out. That is when I learned how to make them myself, double fleece so there is no seam sticking out inside.
