Can I substitute home-cooked chicken for baby food #8282

When my kids ate baby food (not very long ago -- my youngest is 13 mos.), I always boiled my won skinless, boneless chicken breasts, pureed them and used the water as the broth. I don't see why this wouldn't be acceptable for the gliders. Or am I wrong?? I am a cheapskate, and that is MUCH, MUCH cheaper than jarred baby food.

I have made my first batch of BML using the jars, but I intend to do this the next time, if it is okay.

Laura

I can't see why not... I would think homemade baby food would be better for them anyway.... jars have so many preservatives in them.... really we'll just have to wait until Bourbon sees this thread and gives you an answer.

Laura,

Freshly cooked chicken has a much higher phosphorous content then the jarred chicken baby food. Sometime back we had a member who substituted fresh chicken and their glider ended up suffering from and succumbing to HLP from calcium deficiency. Fresh, properly cooked meat is a good occasional treat, but if you use it as a substitution for a prescribed diet ingredient, you through the ratios of the diet off and risk health problems with your guys.

[:"blue"] Glider Greeting, animaluvr:

You [:"brown"] CAN [:"blue"] do anything you decide to do!! But, the question that really needs to be answered is [:"purple"] SHOULD [:"blue"] you substitute cooked chicken for B/F. And the answer is you [:"red"] SHOULD NOT [:"blue"] substitute unless you have done a lot of reading and have a good understanding of the nutritional analysis of the BML diet.

And the reason for saying that is because chicken meat and chicken B/F, surprisingly, have very different nutritional values. Protein, fat and carb content is quite different as is the Ca:P ratio. Take a look at the USDA National Nutritional Database and see for yourself. If you substitute cooked chicken for B/F, without making the appropriate adjustments, you will throw off the entire nutritional balance of the diet.

I don't want to discourage you from modifying and/or experimenting with diets.....just be sure that you have a good understanding of the nutritional implications before doing so.

I'm glad you asked this question... it's always good to check before you make substitutions. Please read this story here as it gives one member's experiences with health problems after switching to canned chicken...

If there is a Cub Foods near you, I've found their canned and jarred items are much cheaper than most other grocery stores.

I'll just stick to the recipe. I may be a cheapskate, but I'm not going to sacrifice nutrition. It's just that sometimes we assume homemade must be better nutritionally, and sometimes it isn't. I thought for a brief moment about canned, but then I thought about the sodium content, and quickly decided against it. We don't have cub foods, but we do have sav-a-lot. Maybe they will be cheaper.

Thanks,
Laura

Best of luck with your glider(s)!!
