but.. what if they bite and hold on. How do you break the bite. My baby is so young and afraid but sometimes lunges at my fingers and bites down and holds on. We are making progress, sometimes I can be looking into his cage while he is in his pouch and he won't crab. the biting has me worried though. I do give him lickey treat but with a plastic spoon, the fingers are just way to raw now to try it for awhile. I'm hoping that he will associate me and the spoon and my voice face with something really wonderful to eat. I did try him in the bonding pouch, but he crabbed so much that he made a noise that sounded like he was chocking, like a baby that cries so much they make themselves sick. He is only 12 weeks old so very young and not use to being away from mom and dad yet. only had him 10 days.

Becci, you might try hissing at him. It's what his momma & daddy would have done if they irritated him when he was with them. You might also try blowing gently in his face. It might startle him enough to let go.

We have one that when he bites, he punctures and draws blood. This is NOT the kind of bite anyone can just take. Hissing doesn't work with him, nothing does. If we blow or hiss, he bites harder and shakes his head and tears flesh. I'd LOVE to know how to stop this! (only at night this happens, otherwise, he's a sweet kid!)

I think the advice about taking the bite is a lot of balogna. We get in so many rescues that are frightened with being rehomed and a lot that are just not tame gliders. I use leather gloves to handle them. Mary usually uses a larger fleece snuggle blanket and catches them on the back around the shoulders. If we took the bite we would have to have a blood transfusion every week. With a theory like 'take the bite' I hope you never decide to work with larger animals. Look at what happened to the guy in Vegas who took the bite from his white tiger!

Over a month ago, I was handling our then-7-week-OOP male joey for a while and then put him back with his parents. I forgot about washing my hands before feeding the other gliders and got a pitbull bite from our male glider that I handraised. He bit me at least 4 times on my two fingers and each of the bite was torn open. My husband quickly said to put my hand and glider under running water to get him to release his bite on me. The glider got off before I had a chance to put him under the water. Man, did that ever hurt! My trust in this handraised glider went poof! It took me a while to start trusting him again. The thing was, he just took me by surprise because he was very bonded to me, he was my baby.

slavestooursugy, this glider had a mate who had twins IP. I think he was protecting his territory and his family.

uhoh - your little one is very young, and it is going to take some time for him to come around, work at his pace, when you feel you are ready to try lickie treats again make sure that you take you finger away before he has liked it clean, they will often bite after liking thinking that they can get more of the good stuff…

Well, I had Pepsi out today to trim his nails..everything was fine..then SUDDENLY..without warning..GOTCHA MOM!! Got me twice about the same time, one on the edge of thumb and one in the quick of my nail..blood starting pouring! This is the last straw with this one...I'm going to get gloves today to handle him. I'm diabetic and don't heal well at all anymore. I don't agree with the "take the bite either Charlie". (looking for steel lined gloves...)

I don't take the bites either. I also don't use licky treats when bonding with a glider. I will instead use a favorite treat that I can hand to the glider. (yogies, dried blueberries etc...) I only use licky treats with those that I know won't bite me. And even then, rarely.

I agree also guys, it's easy to say "take the bite," but it's a hard thing to do when you've got a glider biting down so hard that blood is running down your finger...Gizmo would VICIOUSLY bite when we first got him (he rarely does now) and I could not fathom "taking the bite" which meant me bleeding every single day....I think there's a difference between an "I'm annoyed" bite versus an "I'm mad or terrified and going to tear your finger off" bite .....

I had one that started out liking me and then all of a sudden one day it just started going down hill. He ended up hating me. If I only knew what I did wrong to start this. He would lunge at me and bite so hard that I would get tears in my eyes. I could have taken the bites but it's the not letting go that got the best of me.
I finally had to put him up for sale, but was very honest about him in the ad, and fortunately bdeese from here on GC found us. She somehow turned him right around.

I actually do think it's good to take the bites *when possible*, or should I say *when reasonable*. I also agree with Charlie, Dancing and some of the others that with some gliders, it's just not possible OR reasonable.

But like with my Jeepers, she only bites when she's in the pouch (pouch protective) and when she does bite she usually doesn't draw blood. She also doesn't hang on. She just bites to say "hey get your hand outa my pouch!" but if I move slowly and I'm not in a rush, she either won't bite or only bites lightly.

I truely believe that if I were to jerk my hand back when she bites me, it would probably take only one time, maybe twice of that and she would figure out that she could get me to remove my hand by biting it, then I'd be in big trouble with her. As it is, I've been able to take the bite every time and she bites much less and not as hard as she used to.

I've never been bitten so bad to have blood drawn, but my new little girl, Ruby, like to nibble a lot. Hard ones, though. Not enough to break the skin, but enough to startle me. She does it if I'm holding her, or have my hand around her for a few seconds without moving. She doesn't do it maliciously, though, because there's no lunging or crabbing involved.

But those little teeth sure do hurt. .__.;

slavestooursugy, i got this little one for a companion to my male that is 8 months. I'm going to take Dancing's advice because he lunges and doesn't seem to notice that he has a mouthful of something good on the licky treat. Gloves sound good to Charlie, Thanks! I think I have a pair of my mom's old fashioned white ones, I can sleep with them and get my scent on them like we do for the patches in the pouches. Glad this topic was opened, I'm learning a lot!

I have a Mom with 2 IP and boy is she getting witchy . She started biting again. HARD!!!!!!! I took Charlies advice and went out and bought myself a pair of faux suede gardening gloves today. They should do just fine.

Thanks Charlie.

what I did with my first glider who was a lunger, bitter and holder lol... was I would reach into the pouch with a great big piece of fruit (watermelons and cantalopes where her favorites). Anyway I think she eventually stopped because #1 I wasn't giving up and #2 she always got a treat when I reached in there. No she does not expect a treat every time I reach in her pouch but she doesn't bite and hold any more. She does nip every now and then but that is when she has a joey ip or just oop.

I would never "take the bite" from a glider that holds on and draws blood, but for the ones that are just testing you and feel like a little pinch, I can handle that. Hissing or distracting the ones that don't bite so hard is a good idea as well.

After 4 consequtive nites of having my finger bitten and bled I also went the way of the gardening gloves...

They seem less interested in my hands now that is protected, previously they loved to come and check out the foreign object and take bites off it. Maybe its still new

It is much different when you have a glider who is out for blood as opposed to one who is nippy because they are curious (young joeys sticking everything in their mouth), or the glider who nibbles when he starts to groom you (starts out licking & then gives you a nip) or the glider who nips because they ran out of licky treat. Those bites are ones I will take & fuss at the glider for getting too rough. However I will NOT to take the bite of the pit bull glider or the glider who sets out to draw blood. Gloves are a good idea with these guys. Another technique, if you can't even reach in the cage without them attacking & trying to draw blood is to offer treats through the bars of the cage (That way they learn that they have to take them carefully) for a little while & then start offering treats to them in the cage. This technique worked with my little Pit Bull Meeko who would even ignore wormies to bite me. Now he is much more of a gentleman, nippy sometimes still, but no longer out to draw blood.

The strangest thing for my Natasha is that initially hissing works great, she will just let go, and then do something else after I hissed. NOW its a different story. Hissing would only get her to release temporarily, while still grabbing on to my finger, she will bite again, and again as many times as I hiss.

Boris is much better in this sense that he has never bit me till I bleed, and he knows which part is food (mealies i'm holding, apple sticks, seeds etc) and which part is my finger that is off limit. and when there's no food left he would smell and then nibble and then look elsewhere in my hand and nibble. He's just the gentler one...

It has gotten to a point that i'm SCARED to put my hand in the cage anywhere near Natasha, thats when I got myself the gloves

Yes, my sugies trained me better than I trained them...

Well since I first started my research I have seen a lot of take the bite posts. I would have to say that I do think that there are many who read that and go okay and in action say no way. I refuse to be bitten. But in the same sense my wat to avoid this in the beginning was to put my hand in the cage of the seller from the beginning. The ones that I could put my hands on, of course they were still running around the cage, but did not attempt to bite me these were the ones I picked.
My male is just a loveable and patient he never crabbed at me or attempted to bite I could do whatever I wanted from the beginning. I even attempted to grap him firmly just to see what his tolerance level was and he did not attempt to bit me just tried to get away and I let him.
The female on the other hand was and is still pouch protective. I knew this from her barking when I moved the pouch. So a couple of times I put gloves on and put my hand into the pouch she crapped and bit hard. I did this several times over a couple of days and she realized I was not going anywhere. Then I would gently nudge the pouch and she would bark but I would dangle a meal worm, cricket or yogurt drops in the opening after a few days of this she realized I was there every time with a treat.
Since she was a biter at first I was worried about tent time. I moved them to the tent in the pouch and they came out at first recieved their treats and just explored a little. I do watch my hands because she explores with her teeth sometimes much like a shark. She will sniff me momentarily and when I see her jaw open I say no and she stops the process of attempting to bite me without me jerking my hand. Although I am afraid she is going to pounce on me sometimes.
Well last night I just sat in there for 2 hours while they ran around the tent and ALL over me. They would go to the yogurt drop cannister and attempt to open it. That was funny.
I believe I did a couple things right to begin with. I tested the personalities of the ones I wished to purchase prior to buying them.
After I got home I gave them time to adjust but always openned the door to the cage and invaded the space a little to make them aware I was a natural fixture sort of speak and came with the cage.
I took my time with them. Also decided not to at anytime allow them to lick food from my skin. I refused to have my body associated with being food only bringing food.
Finally I stay open and aware of there personalities changing if in fact they do and adjust my behavior accordingly.
I hope this helps and for those of you who are taking the bites more power to you I would rather not. I am a sissy in that area.
