that was the verdict from fecals on 5 of my furkids. I only took 6 in with me (well 7 but Leilani was being good sleeping in my bra so they didn't know she was there). They did fecals on everyone but Chewy since he was pretending to be a spy and watching every move the vet made. Since we already knew what we were dealing with we just let him be. I got to see the lil bug in the scope and read the vet book but still I have to see what this stuff is. all but 1 of the gliders checked had lost weight (Leave it to Noel to be the chunk who didn't cause she needs to drop about 50 grams!)

Now the question is why do my kids have yet another bird bug?

Why are other vets not seeing these things when they do the fecals! 3 times I have had other vets find nothing when in fact my kids did have a parasite. This makes me wonder how many people are getting told they are clear when they really are not.

How did they get it and why do my kids keep getting the odd stuff. Is it from living on a farm?

Good news is the vet is looking in to this. The kids are on the people Zpack med mixed compound just for them and a special high price from the pharmacy lol.

Over all I am thrilled cause the vet says Patches is not ready to say goodbye.

BUT REALLY WHAT THE HECK IS MEGABACTERIA anyway!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Great to hear that Patches isn't ready to leave his mommy yet! Sorry to hear about the Megabacteria.

I sure hope it's not due to living on a farm. I have a small farm with horses, boer goats, pigs (well, they already went to the market for the year), border collies, and barn cats. Hope there's no correlation at all there!

Can't wait to hear what your vet finds out. Hope the meds work fast and your babies start feeling better soon! hug2

Ditto!

I hope your babies get better fast. I sure hope it isn't from the rest of the farm animals as I had problems with the little princess, Jadzia, with her losing weight and the "undetermined protozoan".

Best wishes,

Well I have chickens too but reading some of what Peggy's sent me there could have been other factors. We have had RAIN lots and LOTS of rain here lately. I tossed a mealie farm for fear of mold contamination, and DUST we got DUST every place. It is worse when they cut hay but these things we deal with daily so there could be many contributors. Then there is the BAD BAD sneaky kids that pull the paper towel up in the cage because they dropped something they just have to have back. I also clean cages every other week but the vehicle I use to take the cages to the car wash was down and the cages went a month with out getting the full cleaning. I did wipe out the bottom and the tray but still not the bleach scrub I give every other weekend. I used to clean them weekly but it was suggested that may be making the kids over mark so I clean 2 cages each week so I have 2 clean and 2 (or 3 when I have 5 cages) dirty at a time. SO again I may not ever know where this came from grr.

Well besides horses outside there are dogs and parrots in the house. I have a steam cleaner that I use between taking the cages out for a scrub and bleach session.

None of my parrots are sick and they are on the other side of the room from the gliders and they don't get to each other's cages at all.

All these nice weird illnesses. Ugh.

I have been reading since I posted and if I am reading correctly my kids are on the wrong meds UGG I will be calling the vet in the morning. I also sent an email to one of the researchers listed in many of the reports I have read. I don't know if I will have to glue feathers on the kids to get his help since this was all done for birds but I can hope for a reply lol.

Cyndie, please don't glue feathers to your sugar gliders.

roflmao

But really, maybe you should enlighten your vet with what you have learned. You could email them links and ask him to look over them. dunno

Cindy, get HIBICLENS. You can get it at Walgreens or online, even Ebay. It is what hospitals, jails use. It kills ALL bacterias, staph, flu, you name it! You only use a capful to half a bucket of water to clean cages. You can use it on your own skin too. This stuff is awesome, a little bit goes a LONG way to kill all germs and bacteria. Use it on your hands or anywhere! Not even blood affects its power. Look it up and read about it.

I am so sorry you are going through so much! HUGS

I just have my two cents to add. I think that vets may be finall paying attention better to the results in the fecals. What many of us do not realize is that gliders (like humans and other animals) can pick up whatever is around... and there is EVERYTHING around. There are different bacteria/worms/etc in the air/ground/water and there are tons of bacteria that live on our skin and in every orafice... Plus the dirt outside is full of all kinds of crazy tiny parasites... heck, hookworms can get into you by you walking around barefoot.

Also, a lot of vets have their vet techs look at fecals. And they typically only search for what they know... so there may be a lot that shows, but is not identified. And there is the whole different subject of variable shedding. Worms go in cycles, so they may be shedding very heavy at one point, then only shed a couple at another point... so if you take a fecal when there are only a tiny bit of eggs... the fecal is much more likely to miss the eggs. That is why if a person needs to be confirmed clean of something, they have to have a fecal sample 5 days in a row.

Whew... that's it for now!

Thanks for the input. I have a call in because every thing I have seen says fungal/ yeast not really bacteria. So if that is true the antibiotic wont do the trick. Waiting for the vet to take care of an emergency then call me back.

I have been in contact with a few other vets, I have a few more I am waiting on contact with.
I feel
1 if this is correct diagnosis we ARE on the wrong med. (if we are right I worry cause patches liver and an antifungal.. well, it could be hard on him)
2 This could be a misdiagnosis and if it is what do my kids have. Back to square 1.

Still asking around will keep you posted. I just am not ready to take what I have been handed and accept it with out more info.
