Most of you know I've had gliders for years and years and have always had breeding gliders.

What I have seen with MY gliders is when they mate, it lasts only one day (or night), let's say 24 hours. The exception to this was Maui and McKenna. Maui heard me say he was getting neutered on Monday morning and he got busy friday night and kept it up all weekend. Yep, he was successful and they had twins. But they have been the only pair to mate for more than one day.

We have learned so much about gliders just in the last 5 years or so, things we didn't know before.

So, my questions are these, I keep seeing posted on the board that gliders heat cycles are 2-5 days. Can anyone tell me where this info came from? Do we KNOW how long their heat cycle is? Are the females receptive during the entire heat cycle or only for one day?

Teresa, my personal observations of gliders during their heat cycle is that it usually lasts about two days. The first 24 hours is when the female starts to exude her scent and the male becomes very interested in her, following her around and frequently licking her cloaca and scent-marking her. During this first day/night, the female is NOT receptive to mating. The next 24 hours is the actual mating period. Some gliders will mate for more than the 24 hours, but this is not typical.
Upon rare occasions, the gliders will mate even when the female is not in heat. This is very uncommon, but not completely unheard of.

I always say three days (it is more of a 'on the safe side' I think). My males would often be really interested in their girls one night, would mate the second night and still be a little interested the third. They typically didn't eat that second night either. When I separated to skip pregnancies, as long as I separated the very first night they were actually mating (for two nights) they skipped every time. And I would separate them when they were mating, so I also don't think that the very first time (of the night) that they try, they are successful.

When I counted 28 days from the night they were mating, I would separate a day before the 28 days were up and keep them separate a day after the 28th day was over. The male generally hung on the side of the cage that 28th day and wouldn't eat because he was only interested in her.

That is why I always say 3 days, anyway. dunno

If we never loved, then maybe we would never feel pain. Love anyway. It's worth it.

Makes sense to me. Seems we "see" the same patterns. I agree with the 3 day fade in, in, fade out.

I'm sure there are "exceptions" to the rule (there always are).
