This whole experience has made me wonder. I nursed all 4 of my kids on demand and did not supplement for the first 6 mos. Many times, my babies would continue nursing after they were full for the comfort & bonding it afforded. I fell asleep completely relaxed in that rocking chair more often than not! So, I was just curious if anyone knew if joey's would nurse for more than just food? If so all of these hand raised joey's should really have little binkies! lol But seriously, do you think they will be affected by this lack of sucking that is such a need in newborn humans? Boy you really get some crazy thoughts when you suffer trauma & sleep deprovation! :fall:

This is an excellent question, Lynn! And I do believe that the answer is "Yes!" Joeys DO nurse for comfort. However, in all my experience with hand raising joeys, I have never had the fact that the joey could not comfort nurse from me adversely affect them. However, the joeys WOULD try to nurse from my hand, even directly after feedings. I always believed this to be their attempt to comfort nurse heart

Yeah I think they would too! My little one will "bite" at my thumb and I have found him sucking on the fleece a few times. I have to wake him up usually to feed him. I meant to ask this question in the other thread. I should wake him to feed him at this point, correct, rather than letting him sleep thru? I wish there was a way to let them "nurse"!

Lynn, I never did wake my joeys to feed them. I figured if they wanted to sleep through then I let them, and they woke up when they decided they were hungry. That's why the chart is just an average of feeding frequency.
Now, let me quantify that statement by warning that during the first 24-48 hours after rejection, the joey NEEDS to be awakened for feedings because of the fact that they are normally so dehydrated by the time we find them that feedings are critical to rehydration.

Thinking about your question about joeys nursing for comfort has made me wonder something. I wonder if it would be beneficial to allow a joey to "comfort suckle" from a feeding tip that is dry - in other words with no food in it. The tip is very small so it would fit into their mouth. You don't put it in their mouth for feedings due to fear of asphyxiation, but dry, comfort suckling shouldn't be a problem. Do you have any feeding tips to try this out with? If not, let me know and I'll send you some to experiment with wink

I don't have any feeding tips, just the french cath. I would love to see if this is something we should do, and unfortunately, I am in the possition to try it! Maybe this is the good that will come of this, ya think? What about the top of a small eye dropper? You can send it to Lynn Martel 1509 Manor Lane Mt. Pleasant, MI. 48858

With the joeys I hand raised, they all would suck on my finger or thumb after eating. I nursed all four of my kids and did the bonding/comforting nursing too, so after I fed the joeys, I made sure they were in a position to suck on my finger or thumb if they wanted to. They all wanted to, BTW.

Just wondering if anyone else is hand raising a young joey and would be interested in this project? That way we would have some one to compare with.

I don't know if it was for comfort or not but with Duncan, I always held him in my left hand while feeding him with my right hand. Even as an adult glider, if I held him in my right hand, he would curl up and go to sleep. If I held him in my left hand, he would root around looking for food.

I really don't have any information to input here, just wanted to comment on how sweet it all its. heart

Just a question: I'm not sure if its the same with joeys, but i know with human babies I was told not to let them suck from an empty bottle because their little tummies would fill up with air, which would give them a belly ache. Could the same thing happen with a joey sucking from a dry feeding cath? (Might be a stupid question. Though I'd ask though.)

With my one daughter I nursed, they told me I could let her comfort suck whenever she wanted to though.

We would have to plug the end so they don't suck in any air that could cause a tummy ache. I don't know how else to try this, since even baby doll binkies are too big! roflmao confused dunno

I think if you place the tip on an empty syringe that the plunger is totally depressed on there would be no chance of sucking air, Lynn.

I was thinking a q tip in the bigger open end. Is there anything out there that would have to be cut first? If so we could use it un-cut. Who else is handraising a young joey and would be willing to get in on this research? Gliders can be so different in their ways, I'd really like to have more than just me to see comparisons.

Does he suck on the fleece or your skin after you feed him?

Mine too! He pushes the food away when he's full but will go after any skin or the fleece for a minute and then is sound a sleep.

Yes! Keylow does the same. He always makes sure he gets some skin licking in before he's ready for bed.

I dont know if they are too big but the rabbit bottles I use on bunnies are like little nipples, the one thing I would worry about with sucking is the intake of air. I know with baby birds and other animals air is not a good thing to get into their stomach, its almost like you'd need a solid nipple for them.

In handraising Mshki, I have learned that they do nurse for comfort! I have the syringes and the #5 french catheter, as well as some feeding tips that Suz sent me, He will lap up the formula off of my thumb and push it away when he is full. He will not suckle any of those, but will on my skin or on the fleece he's wrapped in. It's only for about 30 seconds at most and he's sound asleep! I usually hold him in my hands or bra til he's asleep and put him back in the incubator to stay safe & warm. This is one of the most awesome things I have ever had to do!

Suz has them on her site. Are you just feeding with the syringe or are you using the french catherter? The catheter & the feeding tips are softer, so you may have better luck with them. I hold Mshki in my left hand with my thumb under his chin. I then squirt out a little formula onto my thumb and he laps it up.

These might also work - and they come without a hole so they would be like a "binky."

The tips of those are too large for a sugar glider joey's mouth.

I bought mine for my rejected joey kit from here, these are shown to size. I haven't had to use them but a friend was using them a couple years ago to feed a rejected joey she had and they worked really well.
