Hi All!

So I went to my very first SGGA this year and had a BLAST! Like many of you, I used a pop up dog kennel from Wal-Mart for my gliders' travel cage.

Well, I ran into a problem with 2 things... stability and places to hang things from.

Luckily I have a really handy dad and we made a pvc frame that made the pop up MUCH safer (should anything fall on it) and also gave me plenty of places to hang toys and such.

Check it out!

They are really easy to make, it took us about 10 minutes total (my dad had the pvc pipe, connectors, caps, and cutters on hand so we didn't have to go buy anything)

I LOVE it!!!!

I use my travel cage a minimum of two weekends a month when I visit my mom and feel guilty about all the "floor toys"..

Thanks for the wonderful Idea!

Nice job oakley!

I made one of those for my pop-up a year or two ago. They really do help. I set mine up so their wheel connects to it, and a food tray sits at the top of cage. I also put mesh on the bottom so all the mess still falls through and they aren't walking in it.

(And tell your dad he's awesome for having everything on hand - that's just like my dad!)

When we went away a few weeks ago I had limited space so I used a LG dog crate like that but also used part of my Suggie Gym Rept. frame and it fit great inside. Had lots of places to hang toys/pouches and the water bottle.

That is the coolest thing I have ever seen!!

Can you do something like that with one of those breakdown laundry baskets? ya know, the ones that have that cloth bottom and mesh all around? b/c that would be cool =D

You could do it with the laundry hampers but you have to enclose the top some how!

Love it! Can you post the dementions for those of us that can't use a tape measure correctly? You know measure twice cut once. That's just not how I'm made. roflmao

Awesome idea! Thank you for sharing this. Just in time for holiday travel! I always go to the inlaws for the holidays and this year I have been trying to figure out the best way to bring the gliders with me.

I don't have pics with me now, but I will post some tonight if I can remember when I get home!

Smoke & Shadow do okay when we've traveled. The biggest problem is when I take them with me to visit my husband's grandmother. My father-in-law and grandmother-in-law don't understand about leaving lights ON. So, every time I try to leave a light on in the same room with the travel cage they go and turn it off. (If they were in a standard cage more light would get though than with the travel cage, so it wouldn't be as big of a problem.)This REALLY screws the gliders' day-night cycle off. Smoke will be up all night running like a maniac in his wheel, and then day comes, but there's no sunlight (drapes AND blinds everywhere!), so he doesn't understand it is time to go to bed, so he just keep playing! I've really tried to explain, but they just don't get nocturnal animals.
(The same thing happens with my hedghog when we take him there.)

Keep in mind when traveling to keep lights on and their day-night cycle about the same as at home!

Okay, it took me a little while to get these photos up... here they are:

The pop-up is an extra-large. Everything breaks down for travel. The mesh floor sits about 1.5" or so above the floor of the kennel so the dirt drops through and they can't get to it. I also added pet screen mesh to the two solid sides of the cage so they have more space to climb.
If you have any questions, let me know!

Home Depots carry the mesh seasonally I think, walmart does the same. I got some from Lowes the first week of October but it was a little bit pricier that way.

What size are the mesh openings? Is this a landscaping product?

The frame -is- really a cool idea.

It depends which kind of mesh you are asking about. On the photos I had above there are two kinds of mesh.

1. Landware cloth - heavy plastic mesh with 1/2" square openings. I also used this for the walls of my cage. In the photos, this is what the "floor" is made out of and it is also wrapped around the pvc pipes to be ab;e to attch things and for glider traction when climbing.
This is often found in hardware stores in the yard and garden department - near the chicken wire. (I get mine at the Anderson's it comes in rolls 3' wide and 15' long. They have it all year round, you might also try somewhere like TSC - which will have other materials for chicken coops and such.)

2. Pet Defense Screen - used for door screens, and found with the other screen used for screen doors at hardware stores (I've bought mine at Lowe's in rolls). This is what I snapped onto the solid sides of the pop-up cage so the gliders can climb. I've also used it for the screen in bonding pouches. It is tough stuff - my cats can climb my screen door without ripping it - and they are close to 15lbs. Since it is meant for screen doors, the mesh openings are quite small - between a 1/16" and 1/8" square. Lowe's has this all year round - I'm sure Home Depot does too.

The pop-up cage came from Target, and I've seen the same ones at WalMart (ech!). Target also has some sturdier ones now online that have a pvc frame - a little heavier and not quite as compact, but they would definitely stand up on their own no matter how much bouncing around you gliders do.

I'm glad you guys like the idea, Shana, that's a great adaptation you've got there! I'm afraid I don't know the measurements of mine... we kind of just cut until it fit smile

I do have to say that it was easier than I thought it would be... especially with with a PVC cutter!

I like this idea better than mine. I had just sewn into the top some lanyard hooks to be able to hang things from. It works well for toys and pouches, although I still had to place the food bowls on the floor and I rigged a way to somewhat get the water bottle to stay on the side of the cage by forcing the tip of the water bottl ethrough one of the holes on the side where there is mesh. Then I used the water bottle hook thingy to try and keep it in place. this set up works ok but it still isn't sturdy enough for all of their bouncing around. I would place it in a corner wall for support and then place stuff around it so that they couldn't knock it over.

But this is such a great idea I will have to have my husband help me make one.

Thank you soo much for sharing this with us!! thanks

Since there were several posts about measurements, here you go:

Extra-Large Pop-Up Cage: Measured in the OUTSIDE:
42" High, Solid Sides 24.5" Wide, Mesh Sides 26" Wide

My "gym":
These are the dimensions for the Cut pieces, so when you add the connectors it fits snug inside the pop-up.

Base Square:
-Two Sides 21.5" Long (Fit against the solid sides)
-Two Sides 23" Long (Fit against the mesh sides)
(Connected with Four-way connectors, and one side has a "T" connector in the center to hold the wheel)

Vertical Posts:
-One Post (Holds Food dish at top)23" (This could be a little taller, but it's a good height to hold to food container and give the gliders head room.)
-Food Dish Holder: Pipes are 5.25" each and connected with three elbows and one 3-way connectors to attach it to the post. (A 870ml Lock&Lock container can sit inside the square. You could also just make a little landware "floor" permanently attached to it to hold a dish.)

-Two Vertical Posts with "T" connectors and caps = 22.25"
(These were measured with the connectors and caps still on the pipes.) (These could be taller and still fit.)
-One Horizonal Bar - 32"

-Snap Clamps (hold the Landware floor to the gym) 4" each - there are 8 of these.

Total Connector Parts:
"T" = 3
Elbows = 4
3-way = 1
4-way = 4
Caps = 2
Snap Clamps = 8

Keep in mind that this gym doesn't really sit on the floor of the pop-up - it's connectors on the bottom sit in the corners, a little way up off the floor to keep the gliders from reaching down and picking up dropped food and such.

PVC pipes are so handy. I use them all the time for my pets. I made a playgym for my African Grey out of PVC and I've put pieces in the sugars cages so that they can run and jump on. I just wrap a rope around the pipes so that the sugars have something to cling on to when running on them. I also use pvc pipes to make tunnel swings for them to swing on and run through. They love it!

I just made it a no sew...I wrapped a piece of fleece around the pipe and then allotted for 11 inch long fringe one inch apart. You have to take the insert apart to get it in and out of the cage, so when I am done, I just slide the covers off, wash and slide back on...

Thanks for the pictures and mention of these pop-up kennels. My boys are going in the vet tomorrow after which they'll no longer be "boys" frown and the pop-up will be convenient for keeping them separated while taking them home (one in the pop up, one in wire mesh cage).

Hope I don't have to keep them separated too long as they still haven't bonded to me yet (in fact, they seem even more pouch protective than ever after my one-week vacation) so I think they need their time together. I just have to figure out which one gets to be in the mansion I built a couple weeks ago and which one gets the "shack".
