Wow, its been a really long time since I have posted. Just wanted to let people know about a danger that can be if someone hasn't realized. Last week, one of my babies died. Because of a no sew pouch. I have always had no sew pouches for my babies. But last week i came to find one of em dead. She managed to shove her head in a gap between the knots and it strangled her. I just wanted to let people know that use no sew pouches. frown

My deepest condolences. I'm so sorry this has happened. hug2 This is a good reminder to check everything that goes in our cages. And if you make no-sew items (pouches, vines), to make sure a tight knot is used, just as a tight stitch is needed when sewing.

God speed, little one. :rbridge:

I am so sorry hug2 . I have worried about this type of accident happening for a long time frown . If using the no sew type pouches, as Katty said, make sure the knots are SUPER tight as to not allow arms, lets, etc. to get *caught*. I am really sorry.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. hug2 Thanks for letting us know about this danger. I have a lot of no sew accessories in the cage, and I always check the knots after washing these items. I made a no sew pouch but took it out because one of my boys untie the knots.

Dave, I am so sorry for your loss.

Tragedies such as this are always a sad reminder to all of us that we should check regularly to make sure all items in our cages/repts are in good safe condition whether they are no sew or sewn items.

Again, Dave, I am so deeply sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry that happened to you! I am not using these pouches at the moment, but I am going to check all of my pouches and toys now. I usually do, but it doesn't hurt to check more often.

So sorry about your loss.

frown I was so sad to read this.

I have noticed that even with no sew blankets, the space between the knots begins to stretch over time, with washing. Your knots can stay tight as can be, but the fleece between the knots starts to stretch out. Please keep your eye out for that when you're checking over no sew items.

I am so sorry that you had to go through this. I have had them on my website for years but have only sold one. I have worried about this type of thing too as I have seen more people use them. Our thoughts and sadness join you.

actually had one of these in the pouch with the boys last night and I saw one poking his head through the bottom corner and it made me think of this post. I instantly removed it. I would have never even thought anything of it otherwise.

I agree with Wendi about even the blankets. The fleece stretches over time with wash and use making the gaps in between even larger. I make the blankets for my skin kids and they can only make it through maybe a dozen washes before they need to be replaced.

Dave, I am so very sorry for your tragic loss cry I was out of town for the Ohio Glider Gathering and didn't have internet access for the weekend. Sadly, I found out about this tragedy while at the gathering, but without internet access, have been unable to reply until now. I would really like to discuss what happened with you to try to find out why it did happen. Please call me when you feel up to talking about it: 440-520-4799.
~~~~~~~~~~~
I'd like to take a few moments to share a few thoughts about the No Sew pouches since many people use the instructions from my site to make them for their gliders.
As with any other item we put in our gliders' cages, it is imperative that they be checked DAILY for any wear, stretching, holes, loose threads (on sewn items), etc.
When MAKING No Sew pouches, it is VERY important that the two pieces of fleece be oriented so that the stretch of the bottom piece goes in the opposite direction of the top piece, by rotating the top piece 90 degrees before cutting the fringes. Doing so ensures that there is some give along all three edges so that if a glider does get caught in one of the holes, by wriggling, the opening should loosen up enough to prevent true entanglement.
By the same token, the fringes need to be cut at the specified 1/2" width. If cut wider, then the stretch and give of the junctures is inhibited.
While I feel deep sorrow for Dave's loss, I have to point out that in the five years since I originally posted the instructions for No Sew Accessories, this is the very first accident or tragedy that has come to my attention. Again, please make sure that you are checking any and all items in your gliders' cages on a daily basis.
Dave, please know that I feel deep sorrow over this tragedy hug2
I am so sorry to hear of your loss, but I thank you for posting this. It serves as a reminder to check pouches daily --something I, as a newb owner, did not realize was so important. I plan to check their pouches as often as I can in the future.
I have not made any of the no-sew accessories yet, however I have been planning to -- in fact, in a random act of kindness from a stranger, I was just recently gifted a great deal of fleece for the purpose of making my gliders pouches. I am unsure if I will do so, or use the fleece for something else after reading this post.. but if I do make the pouches, I will be sure to check them constantly.
