I am wondering the proper way to pick up a sugar glider. I must be doing something wrong, because I only get bit when I try to pick them up. Is there a way they should be picked up that wont make them bite?

Thanks

I believe it's best to hold the back of your hand several inches in front of them and just lower than their feet. Alhough sometime I will hold the palm of my hand out and they will come to me that way too. I try not to pick them up by reaching over their back (the one handed pluck) as this is how a preditor would grab them. Instead if they are not climbing or jumping onto my hand I try to scoop them by sliding my finger under their belly or two handed scoop from both sided. Quick scooping or "emergency/rescue (dangerous situation) scooping" is best done with a piece of fleece.

A 2 handed gentle scoop from both sides like described above is best!

So. . . I have had this problem with Nix- when I first got him I went to pick him up to put him back in his cage and he bit me (not hard), but I put him back down. And I guess he thought that if he bit me, he didn't have to go back in his cage. Well, he kept trying to bite me and I just made a "pssst" noise at him and put him back in his cage anyway. He has stopped biting.

He never wants to go back in his cage. He has learned that if he can get his head back out the door, we have to open it back up and he can wiggle back out, lol!

LOL! You're not alone with your problem! He just wants to spend more time playing with mommy!

Try putting a bit of his dinner in a pouch and when he goes in after it, you can scoop him up and put him back in the cage with the pouch.

Yeah I'll have to try that- I am a sucker for it, too and the all know it. Once I have them in the cage they will hang on the door and look at me and sometimes bark at me. And sometimes I can't help but to let them out for a little longer, lol! I know I am trained, you don't have to say it!

I find that putting my hand in front of them, palm down, with a little scoop from behind if needed helps them hop onto my arm.

Many gliders, even tame ones, will bite you if you just grab them like a hamster. If you do HAVE to do the grab, I second the idea of using fleece over your hand to protect your hand and so the glider doesn't associate your hand with bad things. Try to avoid this kind of grab as much as you can.

Bribing your glider onto your hand with a treat can also help train them to hop onto your hand when it's offered.
