Brodies face looks pretty much normal now....if you discount the lack of fur around his eye, and the scabs on his nose from his abscess....and a new one across the front of his nose (I'm assuming he scratched himself washing his face....either that or he bumped into something). He is still stuffy, sometimes quite severely stuffy, and other times almost not at all....I never know if he'll be snuffling or breathing normally. I have contacted my vet to see if there is any kind of a decongestant that a glider can take. He is doing some research to see if there is something safe out there that will help. In the meantime, I've got a steamer running near the cage to help him out.

I wonder if it would be safe to put vapor rub (Vicks) in the steamer. I use to do that with my son when he was little and stuffy.

I thought about that Teresa, but thought the odor might be too strong for too long of a time and didn't really want to risk it. I did let Brodie smell the vicks container tho.

I think Brodie is feeling better tonight. He had me worried earlier because he just wouldn't settle, and was very stuffy. He'd climb around for a bit and then hang on his pouch and snort/snuffle then he would climb some more. I kept trying to either get him to settle into my bra or in his pouch, but he kept insisting he wanted to be up and about. Now his climbing is getting stronger and he is even making small hops. Also instead of walking on the wheel, he is actually starting to get a little bit of speed while on it. Not tons, but more than he's had in a while.

OMG.....I don't know what is going on.....Brodie was up playing last night and this morning about 2 hours ago I had him up to eat a little snack and he seemed like he was doing pretty good, but I just got him out and he had blood around his eye and his nose was bloody and there was blood coming out of the abscess on his nose. He was gasping and breathing through an open mouth. While on me, he seemed to have some sort of seizure and leaped off onto the floor. I've got a call into my vet, but they are not usually there on Sat and are having to call to find out what to do. He has calmed down somewhat and is no longer gasping like he was and I was able to get the blood washed off but I'm really scared for my baby.

Chris, put a warm compress on his face/nose. It sounds like the abscess has ruptured. Is he still on antibiotics?

I hope that you can get someone to see him today. If it is a rupture, his sinus cavity possibly will need to be irrigated.

My prayers are with your precious baby. hug2

I got his face washed up with warm water and he seems to be doing better now. He is not breathing/gasping/gagging any more and has calmed down. He seems more alert now as well. Still waiting to hear from the vet.
And yes Linda, he is still on his antibiotics and pain meds.

That's good news Chris. Until you can get him in, keeping that area warm will allow the infection to move through faster.

I just got back from the vets with Brodie. Dr Kaiser thought he was looking well and that the bloody nose this morning was just a result of his sinus infection....maybe something breaking loose, or dry sinus membranes. The blood from around his eye appear to have come from some small scratches. It's possible that Brodie scratched himself when washing his face...he could have scratched off the scab on his abscess at the same time. Dr Kaiser also listened to Brodie's lungs and said that they were clear and the infection was not moving into a pneumonia/broncial infection and that it is just a really nasty head cold right now. I am to give him his torb 3x a day rather than 2x. Apparently the narcotic effects of the medication will help with any coughing/sneezing by relaxing his muscles. We are also starting him on benadryl to hopefully dry out his sinuses. HIs antibiotics are also continuing and will continue for quite a while.

Brodie had a nosebleed off and on throughout the day yesterday. It seems to have abated now, but I am keeping a close eye on him. He is currently in my shirt sleeping and has been there all night long. It doesn't bother him that he is at work with me except when I use the stapler. He doesn't seem to care for that much. I brought him in with me, so I could keep an eye on him as he totally zoned out for about 4-5 hours after he got his dose of benadryl. Kinda scary, but he does seem to be breathing a bit easier now. I think I may cut back on it a touch and see if that works better. I also wanted to make sure that he is eating and staying hydrated. At this time he is slightly dehydrated. I did the pinch test on him and while his scruff did go back down it went down much slower than I would prefer. Since I didn't have any pedialite at work with me I mixed some honey with water and applejuice and got him to drink some of that (he refused plain water and applejuice) He is also drinking approximately 2cc of his HPW mixture every few hours, so I know he is getting some fluids into his system.

I am hopefully optomistic that Brodie is feeling better tonight. He had his 3rd dose of Benadril and it has really seemed to make a difference. This morning I cut his dose in 1/2 and he didn't react in any way to the amount. I upped it to 3/4th of the original dose and it made him very very relaxed. Not in a blue funk like he was last night, but just very relaxed and kind of sleepy. I'll talk to the vet in the am to see what dose he wants me to use. Brodies nasal drip has nearly stopped and he is sounding much less stuffy today and his nose bleeds have nearly stopped. The only time I saw a sign of one was when he was taking his meds and shaking his head to clear his mouth of the taste. Then I just saw the barest hint. I cleaned up his face tonight also. He had quite a bit of dried blood over the area where his abscess was. I managed to get most of it off (there was quite a bit around the outside of the wound) and applied a generous amount of triple antibiotic ointment over the abscess itself. It looks clean and now I just want to encourage it to heal.
Brodies appetite also came back with a vengance tonight. He inhaled 4 cc of HPW mix in one sitting and then an hour later polished off another 2 cc. I think he would have ate more, but I only brought 6 cc to work with me. I figured (based on his appetite the last few nights) that it would be plenty and he would take 2cc every couple of hours. So there I was with 4 1/2 hours to go before I head home & no more food for a hungry glider. I offered him a little bit of a muffin and he latched onto it like he was starving and scarfed it down. I offered yogurt a little bit later, but he didn't care for the flavor and refulsed to take more than a couple of licks....after he accidentally stepped on it and realized it was food. After that, he was happy to go back into my shirt for another nap.
Here's hoping that his appetite, and strength continue to grow and that his abscess and nose stop bleeding.

Brodie is continuing to do well. A bit more sneezy tonight, but all in all very good........
tho there is nothing like having the glider who is not supposed to be seen by guests decide while you are checking someone in that it is time to come to the top of the shirt and say hi and then pee down your chest.....all while you are trying to play it cool & pretend that nothing happened.

WooHooo Brodie Bear has gained back ALL the weight he lost while he was ill. He has been inhaling HPW like it is going out of style. Last night when he was at work with me, he also ate some strawberry/mango yogurt (only off my finger....can we say spoiled?) and a few licks of mango in addition to 11cc of his HPW mix. I know it is more than what he should get of it, but with him ill I'm not limiting his intake. At least it's something he wants to eat and boy does he want to eat it. He sees the syringe (and somehow he knows when it's mix & when it's meds) and he grabs onto it with both hands and then his tongue starts lapping at about 60mph. He can slurp down an entire syringe (1cc) in less than a minute. Tonight will be the first night that he will be back in with his family for the entire night and hopefully he will eat on his own without Mom having to feed him his dinner. Hopefully he won't go into bra withdrawl tho since he's spent the last 5 nights down my shirt getting fed.

Brodie didn't want to eat on his own last night. He was sacked out sleeping with his family. when I would get him out, he would eat some, but wasn't interested in eating on his own. As a result he did drop some weight again. However today when I got up to give him his 3pm meds he was up running on the wheel and playing in the cage. He bounced over to the door and wanted to come out and run around on Mom for a little while. He had his old Brodie bounciness back when he was out. He was a little stuffy, but not bad at all. It was so nice to see the usual Brodie spark in his eyes and to have him kick into his high gear once more.

I think he was trying to tell me that he was happy to become a "day glider" if he could keep going to work with me at night LOL

Glad to hear that little Brodie is feeling better. He likes that one on one attention from mom.
