Wasn't sure where to post this question, please move if its in the wrong spot. Thanks

I was looking at pictures on google and came across glider harness and leashes.

Are glider harness/leash safe to use? Not for unsupervised but when you are going out and about or something?

I have heard that it can hurt them dunno
But I wanted to ask peoples opinion on here to see what everyone's thoughts are one them.

Here is the website that I saw the harness/leashes:
www.eclecticpets.com/myharnesses.html

Harnesses and leashes are not safe for gliders at all.

Harnesses and leashes are a big bad wolf to me.

Many stories of hung gliders, strangled and torn patigiums have come from the grapevine of the dreaded leash and harness contraptions. If you want to take your gliders with, it is best to take them in a secured bonding pouch or a secure carrier. Superpet makes a very nice carrier. You can find them at pet places all over! thumb

I only checked out the page with the leash/harness but wounld never use it or any other for that matter! It goes right over the patagium (gliding membrane) and can cause damage to it, not to mention how quickly gliders move about. I only see disaster with any type of leash or harness. On another note, at the bottom of the page they have jingle bells listed to add to the harness and these are also very dangerous for gliders. Their nails can be caught in them and ripped off. No good, in my opinion.

I have to say I am skeptical as well. The page says that a glider would be more aware of a harness than traditional leash???? and discourage them from gliding???? Gosh I don't know about you but the air display is part of the charm of owning my gliders! Denying them that seems cruel in the first place, besides all the health hazards associated.

I often go on the sugar glider forums in Taiwan. Leash/collar/harness are very popular there. Almost everyone would put a collar with bell on their gliders, thinking it's cute, and you can locate them when they are running free in the house.

When you tell them it's dangerous, they have the same attitude: I have been putting it on my gliders all this time, and nothing happens, so what's wrong......

Unfortunately seems like people have to learn from tragedy, on someone else's expense.

I would think you would have to train them from joey age to even accept a harness. I know my Arwen would NEVER accept a harness, without even trying one on, as she HATES restraint in any way. Even in a pouch with a zipper. If I zip it up she gets very upset. as soon as I unzip it she will go right back to sleep. she just hates restraints. If I tried to put a harness on her she would FREAK! so think of how hurt a glider could get if you tried to put a harness on them and they started to fight it. ever try to put a collar on a cat who never wore one before? sometimes they go nuts! I think most would freak out. I too think it is better to gain their trust so they WANT to stay on you.
there are always risks involved with taking our animals out. know your animal, weigh the risk, and go from there. but harness on gliders....ummmmm.....I wouldnt try it.

Those are horrible. I don't know who could put one on a poor little glider... frown

no no no...how about bonding pouches?

i know someone who could make some for you for a great price and it's excellent quality.

it will only work in the morning when they are sleeping but it's a cozy way to get close to your gliders.

p.m. if you want more details.
