My very first glider "George" is going on 10 years old and I have a question about how they look when they are getting older.

Just a little quick back ground on George first.

I got him a little over 3 years ago and at that time I estimated his age to be about 6. He had been through 2 homes before coming to me, that I know of. Him and his mate were fed a very poor diet before I got him. (his mate passed before I got him, estimated age of death for her is 5 years) Their diet consisted of pellets, millet spray, peanuts, dried fruits and some fruits, veggies and a little protein. But mostly the pellets, millet spray and peanuts. His coat was very brown, orange color but within 6 months on BML after me getting him it turned out that he was indeed a standard gray.

But I have noticed in the last few months that his coat is starting to look a little rough. At times its more cracked and his tail is thinning. It doesn't look like his tail is being over groomed. Just thinner than it used to be. He is still eating well and his eyes are still bright and his ears are also still perky. He doesn't play alot or is super active, but he has always been this way. I think since he didn't really have any toys to speak of other than his wheel, he never really learned how to play like my other gliders. His vet checks have always been good.

So I'm basically wondering if his appearance is because he is becoming a senior citizen? I know its going to be hard on me when he does pass over the rainbow bridge, since he was my first baby and he has came a long way from where he was when I first got him.

Dexter is my 13 yr old. His tail fur is thinner and he tends to get the "cracked fur" in the winter when it is dry but fluffs back once the humidity goes back up. He is a little lighter in color then he used to be.

He is still as active as he was, which has never been real active anyway.

Dixie is his mate and is 11. She still looks like she always has and still runs on her wheel nightly. Her fur does the winter "crack" too. I really think it is because of the dryer air.

Bourbon's gorgous Baybe...her coloring changed as she got older. When I first saw Baybe, I had to ask "what color is she". She was a grey but was showing her age. She had almost a champaign (the drink, not the glider color classification) coloring to her. I thought she was the prettiest glider I'd ever seen.

Some gliders show their age more than others I think, just as some humans do.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

As sugar gliders age, their coloring starts to fade. The markings that were dark black become a dark grey instead. Their ears start to lose their pigmentation and become a mottled pink instead of dark grey or black. The fur on their tail also starts to get thinner. I have also noticed that the lower back starts to turn tan instead of grey. In the picture of my Darwin, who turned 11 last December, you can easily see how the stripe down the center of his back and on his leg has become faded. In addition, you can see how his ears are fading, too.

In this picture of Pika & Cricky when they were about 12 years old, the fading and the tail thinning is very obvious:

And in this picture of Pika & Nara just towards the end of Pika's 13 years, the difference is very obvious:

Thank you both for the pics! They have helped me alot! I guess my Georgie man is just starting to show his age. I figured thats what it was, but since the only other senior glider I ever saw up close was Baybe and that was for a brief couple of minutes, I really couldnt remember exactly what the signs of aging was for a glider.

Thank you Teresa and Suz!
